Five Foods of Love

Honey: Honey may be sweet but not necessarily so innocent; it’s been said to assist both men and women in increasing sexual desire. Men metabolize the vitamins E and B that are found in honey to produce and maintain testosterone, an essential component of male sex drive, while women use a nutrient known as boron to assist the body in using and metabolizing the sexual hormone estrogen. Plus, honey appeals to the senses with its sweet scent and thick, silky texture.

Served Best: Create your own homemade honey butter that may be perfectly paired with biscuits. In a small bowl, cream ¼ of a cup of butter. Once completed, mix in ½ teaspoon of orange zest, and ½ teaspoon of honey, until light and fluffy.

Chocolate: Turns out there’s a reason chocolate is always found in abundance on Valentine’s Day – chocolate is known as one of the most natural aphrodisiacs around. The sexy secret ingredients found in this delicious food are phenylethylamine and serotonin, both of which are natural stimulants that can mimic the euphoric feeling of being in love.

Served Best: Melt chocolate and serve with fresh fruit as the perfect end to a romantic meal. Fine chocolates can be found at better stores and from specialty chocolatiers like Bernard Callebaut and Valrhona.

Figs: People have long believed that an open fig resembles the female sex organ, and many cultures have associated figs with fertility. Figs are an incredibly healthy fruit as well, packed with nutrients such as iron and potassium.

Served Best: Slice figs in half and drizzle with an equal amount of honey and scotch. Bake in oven set at 400 degrees for around 7-10 minutes. The end result is a satisfying and healthy dessert that will have you fall in love with this fascinating fruit.

Oysters: Oysters are one of the most well known aphrodisiacs. Oysters have a high concentration of zinc, which is thought to increase sexual potency in men. And while the hard evidence hasn’t been found yet, some shellfish, including oysters, have been found to contain certain properties that may be effective in producing sex hormones in both men and women.

Served Best: Simply raw, on the half shell, alongside your favorite sauce.

Hot Chilis: These steamy vegetables will do more then just kick up the heat in the kitchen, they’ll also kick up the heat in the bedroom. Hot chilis are known to increase circulation and pump up our blood pressure. They are also capable of releasing natural endorphins, which help increase energy and gives the body an overall positive feeling.

Served Best: Combined with another aphrodisiac – chocolate – chili powder has never tasted sweeter. Simply add a pinch of powder to hot chocolate and enjoy a famous Mexican-inspired drink.

Introducing Action Item

Straight from the Jersey Shore to the Hollywood Hills, the boys of Action Item are making waves all over the country! With their refreshing new music including their recent single “When Everything Falls Back Down” featuring Chelsea Kane, these fab five are moving on up to the top. Whether they’re performing on stage alongside Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, making noise on Radio Disney, or touring throughout the US and Canada, “The Stronger the Love” singers are giving us all something to love!

We sat down with this rising young band to talk about upcoming projects, evolving fashion and their fall favorites.

Tell us how you got the name “ACTION ITEM”?

We were watching a movie together and the term “Action Item” came up. We loved it as a name and found out that it meant “a goal to achieve/something to accomplish.” It felt very right for us to have a band name with an uplifting and positive message like that.

You are currently on tour with Honor Society. What else do you have in the works?

We are heading out on another tour right after this. It’s the “Friday is Forever Tour” with We The Kings, The Summer Set, Hot Chelle Rae, and The Downtown Fiction. It’s going to be a great show for everyone! Also we have a new single (with our first music video) coming out in mid-July. The song is called “Learn To Fly” and it was produced by Nick Jonas.

What would you say is the overall style of the band? Are there go-to brands that you all enjoy?

We love shopping at little boutiques on Melrose whenever we have time in LA. There are so many great and unique shops to really craft your style there. London fashion is great too, so occasionally we head over to TopMan in NYC to pick up some new clothes.

How has your style evolved over time?

We’ve learned that simplicity can be wonderful. You don’t need to have layers upon layers to have a great style. We’ve been keeping it simple with different cut t-shirts and just accessorizing, whether it be some necklaces and/or bracelets. Accessories really do make more of a statement than you think. Above all, being confident is really important. As long as you’re confident and adventurous in your own clothes, other people will see that.

What trends do you think will be popular this fall?

In our opinion, people always overlook gloves and mittens. We’re from the NYC area, and even with all the people constantly roaming, it’s rare to see someone with stylish gloves. I think it’s time for a mitten revolution.

How does music come together with fashion?

Fashion can really accentuate the type of music someone listens to. We know it’s not great to judge a book by it’s cover, but you can usually pick out the people who love Rock music in comparison to those who prefer Jazz. It’s wonderful how fashion can really underline what somebody is all about.

Congratulations Runway Model Alyssa Campanella, Miss USA 2011

The 60th Annual Miss USA Pageant took place at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. Hosted by Andy Cohen, host of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens: Live” and Giuliana Rancic, co-anchor of “E! News.” Other celebrities include by Kellie Osbourne, daughter of Ozzy Osbourne and co-star of “The Osbournes,” and Susie Castillo, who was Miss USA in 2003.

Alyssa wore a green sparkled dress for the evening gown competition and answered a question during the interview segment about the legalization of medical marijuana.

New technology was used to rate contestants in real time as the competition unfolded on television. The fan ratings didn’t count toward contestants scores, but fans were able to watch preliminary contests online.

Alyssa succeeds Rima Fakih, the first Arab-American and Muslim to wear the crown.

David Cook the complete interview

That shouldn’t surprise us. When Runway recently met up with Cook, he was totally relaxed (that, or he’s really good at faking it!) and had a great time playing on the roof with our photographer. We loved being able to get to know this talented musician and fun, down-to-earth guy for an afternoon. Here’s part of our conversation:

Runway: You seem so – grounded. How do you keep that quality through your growing popularity?

David Cook: I have amazing friends and family that will quickly bring me back to earth of they see me “floating away”.

R: Do they help you unwind after a crazy day in the entertainment industry?

DC: I really enjoy having friends over to grill out. A good steak, good wine and a good group of friends trumps all.

R: Who or what inspires you on a daily basis?

DC: Different things. If you want to tune into it, there are constant stimuli all around you.

R: But you’re very focused in your music. So tell us, if you weren’t performing, what profession would you be in now?

DC: Oh lord… uhhh…. no clue. I always had my sights set on this, so nothing else ever seemed like an option.

R: What was the first job you ever booked?

DC: My first band and I played at a friend’s birthday party.

R: Ok, switching to fashion: what was the last piece of clothing you purchased?

DC: Two pairs of jeans from Forgotten Saints.

R: Whose current style or general fashion sense do you most admire?

DC: [That’s] hard to say. I’m really into dapper stuff right now; suits, ties, etc. [I’ve] always loved the fit of a Hugo Boss suit.

R: If you could meet any living person, who would it be?

DC: I got a Christmas card from President Obama and his family last Christmas but I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting him, so I’ll say him.

R: If I went to your house and opened your fridge, what would I find?

DC: Well, it’s me, my brother and my guitar player, so, plenty of beverage. And I’m a huge cereal fan, so we always have at least a gallon or two of milk.

R: Last random question: Describe yourself in three words.

DC: Crazy, hungry, repeat.

First Things First- Makeup Primer Review

Face Primer

Face primer prepares your skin for makeup, giving you a smooth, clean canvas so that your makeup stays looking fresh all day. Because of the flawless base it creates prior to makeup application, you should be able to use less foundation and powder.

Most face primers are silicone-based, which helps to smooth imperfections like fine lines and wrinkles. Silicone is not harmful, but you should be aware that just as it helps your skin retain moisture, it can also trap in dirt, sebum and oils that can lead to breakouts with continual or daily use. If you love primer for everyday but have more sensitive skin, look for the brands made without silicone, alcohol or parabens. To use, apply face primer evenly over your face and neck after you moisturize but before you apply your foundation.

Eye Primer

Crease-proof, flake-proof and weather-proof your eye makeup with an eye primer. An eye primer, like a face primer, is designed to create the perfect foundation for eye makeup to bind to so that your eye makeup looks better and lasts longer. Fine lines and other imperfections around the eye and on the lid can be concealed, creating a smooth, even surface for shadow to adhere to. There are even eye primers designed to use prior to applying eyeliner or mascara. You will find that an eye primer and face primer have similar ingredients, but eye primers are designed to be more gentle. Most eye primer products will come with their own applicator tool. Simply swipe a tiny bit of the primer on lids and you’ll have the perfect canvas for your eye art!

Lip Primer

Lip primer sets the lips up to look plump and kissable all day long with moisturizing ingredients like Vitamin-E and beeswax. Some formulas include sunscreen to protect lips from sun damage. Use a lip primer under any color lipstick, lip liner or even gloss. Allow it to dry for 30 to 60 seconds before applying your color.

Elisabeth Harnois Interview

At the age of five Elisabeth soared into films, starring in One Magic Christmas and Where Are the Children. This year, she shines in her role as Dr. Serena Warren in the CBS network’s Miami Medical. Up next for this sophisticated beauty is her role as a Martian in Disney’s upcoming stop-action film Mars Needs Moms, opening March 11. “This is one of the most challenging jobs I’ve ever done,” explains Harnois. “As ‘Martians’, we created our own language which was a lot of fun. I felt like a child again and enjoyed stepping outside normal conventions.”

We met this busy actress after a day of filming to talk about her already-long career, her sense of fashion and find out how she stays so together.

Runway Magazine: Thanks for coming to meet us tonight – we know you have a lot going on right now. Tell us about what started all this.

Elisabeth Harnois: I was 3 years old and it was a Duncan Hines cake commercial. I had to shove chocolate cake in my mouth over and over and then say “Deluxious!” You know? I got paid to eat cake all day, it could have been worse.

RM: When did you first realize your love of performing?

EH: I was two and a half years old. My parents took me to church so I could see the children’s choir. I asked if I could go up and sing with them. The choir director asked my mom if I knew how to read and handed her a hymnal. My mom said no. I screamed, “Yes I do!” I grabbed the red book, stood up with the choir, and sang my heart out. But I made sure to hold the book up just below my eyes so no one could see my mouth.

I think at a certain point my folks realized I loved performing and
thought I could put all that madcap energy to good use, so I started
doing it professionally at 3 years old. I feel so lucky that my
parents allowed me to explore that side of myself so early in life. A lot
of people see it as a negative, but I had a good family, none of whom were in the business or had any aspirations to be in it – that helped. Truthfully though, it was a hobby at that age. It wasn’t until [I was] 11, when I was cast to play ‘Alice’ in Disney’s
Adventures in Wonderland, that I began to really understand what being an actor meant. There, I was surrounded by brilliantly
talented Broadway actors who taught me so much about the struggle
and the joy of storytelling, and really developing a character – that’s when it evolved from a fun hobby to a real profession that
challenged me. Loved it then and now.

RM: Early on, you worked on Highway to Heaven.

EH: Working with Michael Landon was a magical experience. He was very nurturing, sweet and funny. If you’re going to be on a set as a child, his is the one to be on.

RM: Who else has helped you along the way?

EH: Sid Caesar, one of the legends of comedy taught me how to be funny – he taught me about delivery. When I was fifteen, I worked with Dolly Parton. She taught me about being a presence and how to treat people. She is one of the kindest stars on the planet.

RM: Those are some big names for a young actor to get to work with. How do you keep yourself so grounded?

EH: I was raised in a large family with four little brothers – that alone will definitely keep you grounded! Growing up, they’ve always had this magical skill of sensing when I might be feeling a little too popular, and when that happens, they promptly remind me of how many times I had to change their diapers or wipe their behinds or run screaming from my bathroom because they planted a big black garden snake under the toilet. Little brothers are the great equalizer…. But most importantly, my folks raised me with a very clear sense of how quickly things can change, how they come and they go, and that because of the fleeting nature of this business I should always have a pretty damned good idea of who I am as a person outside of it.

RM: Who or what inspires you on a daily basis?

EH: My Mom. She’s a rock star. Professionally, I’m inspired by actors and musicians who seem to always work from a place of genuine truth and authenticity. If Jeff Buckley were still around, I’d grab onto him and not let go.

RM: So how do you unwind after a crazy day in the entertainment industry?

EH: After a long day of pounding the Hollyweird pavement, I unwind quite simply by going home to my man, my 3 dogs, my 2 birds, and my rabbit. No, I’m not kidding. I sit on my soft couch and catch up on whatever my latest junk food escapist programming is at the time. I have no shame in admitting some of my more base addictions, like The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. But I also love comedy and cooking so there’s a lot of 30 Rock and Top Chef prescribed for my post work recovery. Running, reading, snowboarding, wine…

RM: And when things get really challenging?

EH: Meditation, prayer and being introspective help me. And my dogs – because they are so nonjudgmental.

RM: You started acting so young. Have you ever thought about what you’d be doing now if you weren’t performing?

EH: I love food. I love cooking. I’d go to culinary school and then I’d open a place.

And, not to sound like a cliché, I know I want to direct. I majored in film at Wesleyan University and I plan to continue down that path.

RM: Ok, on to fashion! Do you have a favorite designer?

EH: It would have to be a tie between Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. I really admired Alexander McQueen – his death was a tragedy and when I look at his clothes I think to myself, there’s a story there. I also played a small role in A Single Man directed by Tom Ford. He was so meticulous about detail – even when he tied a scarf on my head.

RM: Tell us about your own, personal style.

EH: My daily style is very comfortable and yet classic. Most of my things are classic pieces that I can bring out from five or six years ago and feel good in. My style is very much defined by me.

RM: Any favorite, go-to pieces in your closet?

EH: I have a pair of shoes by Christian Louboutin that always come through. I also have a pair of boots from Venice Italy made by a cobbler located on a little side street – they fit like a glove and are like a hybrid of a cowboy-slash-riding boot. They’re my favorite pair and will probably last forever.

I’m [also] not a super girly girl but it’s that time of year when I can bring out that side of me. I’m very big on the flowy dresses. I have this great little Phillip Lim cotton dress that will never go out of style.

RM: What’s the last thing you bought?

EH: I splurged on a pair of Stella McCartney skinny dress pants with zippers on the ankles – so versatile and beautiful.

Runway Magazine Trend Spotting: Gifting Suites in honor of the MTV Movie Awards

Awards season is an exciting time for celebrities. In addition to the actual ceremonies, they attend numerous parties and gifting suites. Gifting suites are virtual pop-up stores where celebrities are able to choose from complimentary products and services. Most of the products and services are new and have barely hit stores yet. Many companies are hoping celebrities will like their brand enough to help promote it through wearing and/or endorsing the products and services.

Runway Magazine got an inside look at some of Hollywood’s hottest gifting lounges in honor of the MTV Movie Awards and we chose to highlight our favorite trends for you:

First we visited The GBK Gift Lounge. This was a wonderful event complete with a live band, a DJ, and a variety of food and beverages. One beverage that stood out for us was Hawaii Waialua Soda Works: http://www.waialuasodaworks.com/. The tasty gourmet soda comes in flavors such as: passion fruit, pineapple, and vanilla cream. The soda can be purchased online or at Whole Foods Markets and Cost Plus World Market.

As we moved through the gifting lounge, we spotted Nano Dots http://www.thenanodots.com/welcome : a product that is sure to satisfy both geeks and fashionistas. As the scientists at Nano Magnetics say “Nano dots are kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, juiced-up super magnets.” The magnets can be shaped and formed any way your imagination will allow. They also function as jewelry, and are coated in 20kt gold. Our Director of Public Relations cannot put this product down.

We were excited to learn that Hard Candy Cosmetics: http://www.hardcandy.com/ is now exclusively available at Wal-Mart where their affordable, high-quality products are all priced under $10.00. Some of the products include: Glossaholic—a lip gloss lover’s dream with large application brushes, sequins and lovely scents; Lash Ink—a 4 day lash stain, and Matte Top Coat—which gives any nail polish a matte finish.

Other highlights of the GBK Gift Lounge were: Pin-Up Girl fashions: www.pinupgirlclothing.com featuring wonderful vintage dresses, shoes and jewelry for women. A popular giveaway item for the company was their “Bitches Get Stitches” necklace. Another notable brand at the lounge was: Admit To Bitter: www.admittobitter.com.–featuring one-of-a-kind fashion, jewelry, accessories and music all created by New York-area artists. Last but not least, move over cupcakes, the newest trend in sweet treats is cake pops. We spotted Dotpops Bakery Cake Pops: www.eatdotpops.com. With a variety of custom flavors made to order, cake pops are just as good as cupcakes and easier to eat.

After eating our weight in food, we moved on to the The Secret Room Gifting Lounge. Another great event packed with celebrities. We spotted interesting and very unique products at this lounge. The flip flop spa: http://www.flipflopspa.com/ caught our attention immediately. Basically the stylish flip flops exfoliate your feet while you’re walking. Complete with interchangeable pads, foot spray, and essential oil, you’ll have brand new, refreshed feet after a couple of wears of the sandals.

In keeping with the cake pop trend, we spotted Veronica’s Treats: www.veronicastreats.com –whose custom cake pops were shaped like MTV Movie Awards trophies in honor of the occasion. Not short on beauty products, hair accessories, make-up and more, other notable products at The Secret Room Lounge included: One-A-Day Vitamins featuring FloraGlo Lutein: www.healthyhead2toe.com—a brand new product for women including FloraGlo Lutein—which promotes healthy vision and skin support.

Also featured at the lounge were: Seychelles Shoes: www.seychellesfootwear.com –which showcased wonderful designs for summer and Rev 7 www.rev7gum.com–the world’s first biodegradable, eco-friendly gum.

We ended the day exhausted, yet excited to have seen a preview of some of the latest trends in products to hit the market.

SPRINGTIME SPA RENEWAL

FOUR SEASONS SPA | PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

Much like the hotel itself, everything is worth trying at a Four Seasons Spa. Certain treatments, like their Seaside Escape body treatment, are done with such precision that recipients often leave wondering if a better way to spend 80 minutes can possibly exist.

Inspired by the ocean-side milieu, this customizable full-body treatment zeros in on the benefits of seaweed. To begin, marine oils and sea salts gently combine to increase circulation, remove toxins and exfoliate when massaged into the skin. Guests are then enveloped in a mineral-rich seaweed warming hydration wrap. To finish, a silky heated gel is gently kneaded into skin, relaxing tight muscles and draining congestion. The results are a stimulated metabolic system, radiant skin and visibly reduced silhouette.

SPA MONTAGE – BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA

There are few spas that compare to the tranquil luxury found at Spa Montage. Specifically designed to help rid the body of excess fluids, the Body Sculpting treatment seemed most spot-on. Spa-goers work with a therapist trained in manual lymphatic drainage, focusing only on the thighs or stomach region.

Gentle connective tissue therapy is applied, concluding with tightly wrapped icy mud compresses to draw out impurities – thus encouraging waste removal and a smoother epidermal appearance. Sixty minutes of total pampering this is not, but with slimming teases of cellulite reduction in a Moorish sanctuary setting, the end surely justifies the means. Last, a cooling anti-fluid gel is applied, leaving skin feeling woken and rehabilitated.

BLISS CHICAGO SPA | CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Bliss Spa is a modern oasis tucked inside many of the W hotel properties. From movie-while-you-manicure nail stations to a legendary brownie buffet, there’s nothing misleading about the moniker here. This particular treatment, however, might not lure clients in by just name alone.

Branded after signature Bliss products, the fatgirlslim treatment is actually a godsend when occasions call for curve-hugging attire. A progression of targeted applications creates an experience that not only detoxifies and tones but is relaxing to boot. Circulation is stimulated first through total-body dry brushing. Firming grapefruit essential oils are then applied, along with a seaweed mask and heated body wrap. Afterward, Bliss’ Love Handler gel is massaged into skin, followed by an ample slathering of Bliss’ FatGirlSlim or FatGirlSleep cream – leaving guests camera-ready.

SPAHALEKULANI |HONOLULU, HAWAII

SpaHalekulani is the first spa in the Pacific Islands to specialize in healing body treatments. Focused solely on mind/body renewal, it was the Pure Renewal treatment that sparked our interest. Much more than a spa service, Pure Renewal is a detoxification experience – it’s 3½ hours of revitalizing treatments, specialty cuisine and personalized Halekulani hotel service.

Indulgers begin with a calming cinnamon orange detox tea and SpaHalekulani signature foot pounding. Reflexology is administered to open up circulation channels, followed by a massage to relax the lymphatic system. Next, guests are served a Maui pineapple, mint and ginger smoothie to complete the detoxification process – after which comes full body skin brushing, to awaken the lymphatic system, and an espresso limon body wrap. The grand finale is a lunch served on their ocean terrace with a detox therapy foot soak. By the end, optimal well-being is restored leaving guests with absolute physical and mental purification.

GOLDEN DOOR SPA | PARK CITY, UTAH

Inside the famed Waldorf Astoria Park City, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, lies a 16,000-square-foot Golden Door Spa – home of the Japanese art of healing and lymphatic massage.

The 80-minute lymphatic massage therapy is said to assist in building healthier lymphatic and immune systems. By combining light-touch and therapeutic strokes, this graceful massage encourages the elimination of bacteria and excess fluids. By the end of the treatment, the body’s detoxification process has begun and energy is replenished. Top it all off by breathing in the serenity of the private outdoor terrace and fireplace.
