BILLTORNADE Brings Dapper Style Back for FW 2014/2015

Retro nuances were seen through the brightly colored collegiate cardigans and the black and white color block sweaters. The accessories, along with the styling of the models and tattoos peeking from beneath various pieces, suggested a subtle rockabilly vibe.

Moving on from knitwear and cozy mohair, we saw an infusion of edge in the leather and denim pieces shown. Fitted trousers were worn with long fleece coats for a modern look that worked well and kept in theme with the lines contemporary feel.

The suits, though cut close to the body, still possessed a fair amount of rugged masculinity. The tailoring of the line was exquisite, and lapels were kept narrow. Overall, a classically designed line with a youthful edge that is perfect for the everyday fashion forward male.

The Different Shades of Laneya Wiles

Actor, Comedian, Director and Writer, Laneya Wiles is making her mark as one of the most versatile up and coming talents to watch in Hollywood. Up first, this multitalented actress will share the big screen Vanessa Hudgens, James Earl Jones, Rosario Dawson, and Brendan Fraser in the highly anticipated drama Gimme Shelter which hits theatres TODAY. In a complete 180 from her role in Gimme Shelter, Laneya is also currently making her presence known in New York as a stand-up comedian having recently performed at the famous Gotham Comedy Club, New York Comedy Club, The Stand, Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, and Greenwich Village Comedy Club to name a few. She also created, directed, and starred in the hilarious web parodies “Straight Hookin” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lsdFw422gk) and “Beyonce’s Life is But A Dream 2” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjuT5HscB34).

We caught up with this star on the rise to discuss her range as an actress, upcoming projects, and of course…fashion.

You play a pregnant 15 year old in GIMME SHELTER. What sort of preparation did you do for the film?

In preparation for the film, the other ladies and I actually intermingled with some of the girls who lived in the shelter and got to know them. Meeting and being around the person in which this story is about gave a really clear perspective of it all. All of this gave us the opportunity to get a more well-rounded view of what life and the experience must be like, as well as the familial bond that is experienced in the shelter.

What was it like sharing the big screen with such reputable names as James Earl Jones, Vanessa Hudgens, and Rosario Dawson. Did they give you any advice on set?

It was an amazing and humbling experience to have the privilege of working with James Earl Jones, Vanessa Hudgens, Rosario Dawson, and Brendan Fraser. A few moments that stand out to me was when we were nearing the end of shooting the film, and I had a private discussion with Vanessa on how she felt production was going. I wasn’t necessarily given advice, but I really learned how down-to-earth she was to just have me in her dressing room to talk. So, that’s something I admired…because that’s how I’d always want to remain. She gained weight, changed her overall appearance, was very dedicated to the role, and there was a day on set where I had a midriff top baring my stomach (without the fake pregnancy belly on) and she said, “You have a really nice shape!” You could also tell she missed being “fit-Vanessa”. Other than that, a lot of days a bunch of us girls would listen to music and sing along in the production van, eat together… People are always in awe of stars in Hollywood, but ultimately they are all still just human. Another moment that I vividly remember was with James Earl Jones. James playfully asked me if I had a grandmother around his age. I said, “I do, she’s Puerto Rican. Do you like Spanish women?” to which he replied, “Oui, oui!”

Is it true that you are also a standup Comic? Do tell?

Yes, I also am a comic. I figured all of these ridiculous happenings and the uniquely bizarre situations in my dating life was a great means to creatively vent. I don’t believe in revenge, and was taught how to be able to laugh at myself…so why not make fun of the fools I’ve encountered and my unfortunate decisions? Haha! It was something I’ve always wanted to do, but didn’t always think I was capable of. Once I stepped outside of my comfort zone, learned the craft and jumped in…I loved it. It’s such an adrenaline rush and I love being able to make people laugh…turning a negative into a positive.

Let’s talk fashion. How would you describe your own personal style?

I’d describe my style as ranging from Sophisticated to Edgy. I love the asymmetrical, form-fitting, leather, animal prints, the occasional subtle lace, and sparkle! Since I went to a private school most of my life, I always like to really show my own personal individual style. On dress down day, I dressed up!

Being a New York native, you must know how to dress for the cold. What are your tips for keeping warm while still looking fashionable?

I definitely dress in layers! Here in NY, we’ll walk out in the cold and then go into a building that’s blasting the heat! I definitely own a variety of coats and gloves to coordinate with my outfit for the day. I also crochet my own hats and wear them, too! I absolutely love wearing boots. I personally still try to wear color since it gets so dark already during the winter time and a lot of people just wear black or dark colors. Any chance I could wear a color that pops, I will. I’m addicted to really cute high-heeled boots, I have these Valdini boots that are so warm and still look great.

As a Starlet on the rise, where can we see you next?

I recently finished a new media project called Livin’, you can find me at different comedy clubs around New York City, and I have a couple of projects I’ll be producing in the works, as well!

Unexpected Sparkle

At Runway, when it comes to fashion and ideas, we like to think outside the box. Besides the general eye shadow, manicures and clothing options, we wanted to look for something that stood out and really made a statement. The hottest designers of spring 2014 are showing us that you can add sparkle in unexpected places, while still keeping your look classic and not too over the top.

Christian Dior tops the list of my favorite use of gold metallic this season. Perfectly sculpted, and truly artistic, the models of the S/S 2014 Dior show walked with golden eyebrows by makeup artist Pat McGrath. To achieve this bold and beautiful look, McGrath bleached the brows of the models before applying a mix of liquid gold pigment and micro glitter. Makeup was kept simple, with just a cream foundation and a nude balm on the lips. It made the eyes pop and accented the Dior line beautifully. A great statement look to try at a party this season.

Another fun infusion of gold was spotted backstage for the Dries Van Notens Spring show. Wanting to accent the opulence of his new line, he wanted hairlines and eyelashes to reflect a golden sparkle. Calling the technique “poetic”, makeup artist Peter Philips created a look that is easy for any woman to recreate. Beautiful for a party or night out, you start by sharply parting your hair once it is blown out and glossed. Mix strips of gold leaf with hair wax and paint along the part for a look that is truly refined. Going the extra step, if you have the time and patience, you can accent the lashes as Philips did. He carefully placed cut pieces of golden string along the lash lines with tweezers and professional grade makeup adhesive. Though time intensive, it truly does add something magical to the overall look.

Former Hills alum and fashion mogul, Lauren Conrad, showed a grown up twist to the temporary tattoo on her official website and we found it too cute not to include on our list. By using a simple stencil, fine glitter and lash glue, you can create “tattoos” that can take place of jewelry to accent your outfit. A technique that is both easy and youthful.

Lastly, a favorite new spin on the manicure is the reverse manicure. Instead of having glittered or lightly hued tips, you incorporate glitter in a half moon shape on your cuticle for a look that is unique. The most popular combo for spring? Gold glitter with pastel hued polish, try a baby pink or mint green for a trendsetting combination.

Always remember, a little sparkle goes along way. And, if you find yourself in a time crunch but need a hint of glam, a sparkling pair of diamond studs can be added to any ensemble for an instant beauty lift.

Achieving The Purrfect Cat Eye

For those of us who have hectic schedules, it is nice to have these handy tricks on hand to know how to look red carpet ready anytime, anywhere, without all the time and effort.

The cat-eye liner is a quick, fun, red-hot beauty trick every woman should master. Cat eyes are a sexy style on every eye type. With all of the new eccentric trends celebrities and their stylists come up with, sometimes it is not always easy to keep up on what is hot and what is not. Runway is here to help you with beauty do’s and don’ts this season, and this classic look is always a do.

Below you will find the few simple “How-To” feline fixes to give you that “purrfect” cat eye.

Step 1
It is always best to start with a clean face. Start by applying an eye shadow primer to the eyelid all the way to the brow bone. (Use sparingly, a little primer goes along way!) Let the primer dry.

Step 2
With a black eyeliner (liquid or a crayon eyeliner works best), draw a line starting from the inner corner of the top lash line to the outer corner of your lashes, creating a thicker line as you reach the end of your lash line. Add a “wing” with the liner as you near your outer lash line. To thicken the line for a darker effect, continue to add thickness to the “wing” until desire look is achieved. A liquid liner is great for adding length and thickness to the “wing” effect.

Step 3
Carefully, with your liner, create a base for your shadow by drawing a line in your natural eyelid crease until you reach the thickest point of liner BEFORE the wing. Blend.

Step 4
Fill in from the crease of your eyelid (where you lined with pencil) to the base of your lashes, with eye shadow. (I find that a darker shadow works best a dramatic nighttime look.)

Step 5
Touch up the “wing” after adding your shadow to reach desired length and thickness. Apply additional liner to the inner lash line at the bottom, and just below lashes. Blend to create a smoked eye effect on your bottom lash line.

Step 6
Using a liquid highlighter just beneath your brows, blend from your brown bone to the dark lid you created.

Finally, add your favorite mascara, and you will have achieved a look that will deliver lasting drama throughout your evening. From one fast-paced fashionista to another, farewell until next time!

A Look Inside the Fashion of Beyoncé’s Visual Album – Part Two

In “Rocket”, Bey wears lingerie by Agent Provocateur and a denim button down by Nobody Jeans. The video, shot in black and white, is a sensual peek into who B is behind closed doors.

The album moves on to “Mine”, which displays the most Avant Garde fashions of the entire visual project. Breathtaking in a stark white leather corset and flowing skirt by Gareth Pugh, Beyoncé is shown surrounded by modern dancers draped in neutral chiffon fabric, her head covered in a drape by Issey Miyake. Later she lets loose in a fringed dress by Maxime Simoen. Masked and painted dancers roam the beach and desert in an abstract video that makes a bold fashion statement, making it a favorite on the album.

From “Mine” she transitions into “XO”, a fun and colorful piece of art. Wearing casual pieces, we see B in a more relaxed setting playing on Coney Island. In this up-tempo, she dons a T by Alexander Wang tank, Urban Outfitters hat that gives a nod to Notorious B.I.G. and a Gypsy Warrior mesh bra. The oversized gold jewelry pieces play up her fun side.

“Flawless” and “Superpower” show a harder side of Ms. Carter. Shown on the streets in both, she portrays herself in a way that is not all glamorous, angelic softness. The fashion also shows a grittier side that we absolutely love. For “Flawless”, B rocks customized cut off denim shorts by Guess, a plaid top by Kooples and chains by famed fashion house Maison Martin Margiela. “Superpower” shows more costume-esque looks with a cropped top and pants by B. Akerlund and a headscarf by Michael Schmidt. My personal favorite ensemble of the entire album. It is strong, fashion forward and sexy.

Closing out, our last chosen video to spotlight was the album closer, “Blue”. The most raw, and real song on this album, in my opinion, was the stripped down ballad she sang about her daughter Blue Ivy. It is pure love and features her daughter’s voice on the track. It is the perfect ending to a roller coaster ride of emotions that is, Beyoncé. The project included heartache, doubt, lust and power interspersed with truth and love. In a basic cream lace dress, we see the everyday Beyoncé, the mother, the wife, the beautiful superstar in her most intimate of moments.

Britney Spears Remixes Her Fantasy

Speaking of “Perfume”, Britney has launched a hot new fragrance duo, and series of sultry ads and commercials, that portrays her two sides, the naughty and the nice. In the ads, “naughty” Britney rocks a rich brunette wig to represent the dark side of her new extension to the Fantasy line, an endeavor that’s been successful for the Spears enterprise since its debut, and the sweeter blonde Britney, adorned in jewels, represents the “nice”.

Spears says she “mixed original notes with new scents” to create more ways for her fans to express their inner fantasies. The Fantasy Naughty Remix is more of a musk with wood undertones, while the Fantasy Nice Remix is softer with hints of kiwi sweetness mingling with jasmine. Available to purchase in stores and online February 2014, both scents are addictive and alluring, very much like Spears herself.

Top Hair Trends for 2014

Trend #1 – The Bob

Design houses Altuzarra and Marc Jacobs featured models with chopped bobs that were fun and bold. Fringed bangs dominated the runways this season as well. Worn smooth and sleek or choppy and pieced, the bob came in variations that were versatile and full of personality. A hairstyle that is easy to maintain, it is best to make regular visits to the salon to keep your cut fresh and shaped. Use a cream that is not too heavy to piece it out and add texture, or to keep it light, use a mousse such as Pantene’s Flowing Body to add volume without weighing hair down.

Trend #2 – Mermaid Waves

Diane von Furstenberg and Versace opted for a romantic spin on their hair and make-up styling this season. Tossed and tousled, the models hair wistfully accented the collections in a style that is a no-fuss, natural approach to hair styling. To achieve this look effortlessly, loosely braid damp hair in two braids before going to sleep, in the morning let hair down and spray with Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray for a cool, beachy look that will last all day.

Trend #3 –The Low Pony

The low pony makes its appearance repeatedly on the “hot style” lists year after year, and rightly so. This style is classic with being a simple and quick fix to the hairstyling dilemma. There is something about the pony that looks so sleek and put together, making it perfect for this season’s runway. Jason Wu and Altuzurra showcased the low pony, shown slick and secured tightly at the nape of the neck. Use a high gloss finishing spray to tame fly aways and give the look a polish.

Make Me Up: A guide to this seasons make-up trends

Face:
Let us start with the basics. Your foundations, crèmes and setting powders will be a matte finish this season. The dewy days of summer are behind us, and a more natural and refined look is called upon for autumn. Great for all skin-types (it will tone down an oily complexion, yet lends subtle moisture to dry skin), a matte finish affords more room to play with eye shadows, liners and lip stains.

When applying a matte finish foundation, make sure you first apply an oil-free moisturizer and neutral lip balm; as matte crèmes can cake on lips, eyelids and skin that is not properly cared for. A matte complexion does not equal a heavy base. You can cover problem areas with a matte concealer, without having to apply full coverage. By doing so, it will further enhance the natural look when the summery bronzers and dewy highlighters have been tucked away.

A great product to achieve the matte-finish is NARS Sheer Matte Foundation. This foundation has a soft, matte finish that is sheer and is easy to build upon without being too heavy. The formula is weightless and absorbs oil, keeping your skin shine-free. In addition to its lightness, it possesses complexion-brightening properties, which improves your skins radiance and luminosity naturally. (Retail $44.00)

Bare Minerals has a mineral matte foundation powder that provides the no-makeup look or feel that gives flawless matte coverage and lasts up to eight hours. Similar to the NARS foundation, the Bare Minerals matte foundation also absorbs excessive oil and will not dry out the skin. Both great options to obtain a flawless matte finish. (Retail $27.00)

Eyes:
As Miss Audrey Hepburn once said, “The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.” Truer words have never been spoken, as our eyes are truly the window into who we are. As women, we get the pleasure of playing them up to sparkle, to seduce, to tell a story or remain a mystery. This fall is all about drama and intrigue when it comes to playing up our pretty peepers.

One of the eye trends you will be seeing this year is sparkle! Metallic shadows come into play just in time for the holidays. Natural metal shades of ore, gold, copper and silver are more fitting for fall 2013 than the bright colors that are best reserved for spring. Paired with a smoky, smudged liner it gives an air of sophistication and glamour.

This brings us to our second fall trend this year: the undone, smoky eye. Unlike the artful smoky-eye that you’ve undoubtedly mastered in your early twenties, the grungy smoky eye of the season rocks an attitude that is more edgy than elegant and more flawed than flawless, but in a very good way. Liquid black liner and cat-eyes have made a comeback too and look gorgeous for a Saturday night evening on the town with your best little black dress. Meow!

For day, the eyes are more understated. Extremely so, in fact. With just a light sweep of mascara, some concealer under the eyes and neutral or no shadow, the woman of fall 2013 incorporates color through her wardrobe and keeps her skin light and natural.

For the best in metallic shadows: The L’Oreal Paris HiP Duo Secret shadows pair two complimenting metallic shades together to take the guesswork out of color pairing. (Retail $8.25)

For the best in eyeliners: Whether you prefer liquid, gel, or pencil, you cannot go wrong with our top picks. The NARS pencil provides an intense pigment that glides on smoothly for precision. Its creamy texture is ideal for blending and smudging. (Retail $22.00) For a gel eyeliner, our top pick is Bobbi Brown’s long-wear gel eyeliner. It gives the appearance of a liquid with the ease of gel. Longwearing and water resistant it stays on without creasing. This is a great liner for pairing with your metallic shadows. (Retail $23.00)

Lips:
Fall is the best time of year for a perfect pout. Deep, rich colors make their dramatic appearance and this season it is all about wine. Deep burgundy, merlot and purple make up the delicious palette that works well with both a neutral and smoky eye. The purple lip caught on after making an appearance in Milan and it has made its way stateside. The deep reds seem to forever be a revolving trend and we could not be happier. Both provocative and sophisticated the deep red lip is a classic.

Best picks for a dark lip this season: Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. This lipstick gives a hint of a deep, rich color without being too bold. (Retail $18.00). Too Faced La Crème Color Drenched Lip Cream in Devine Wine gives a deep, rich color for nightwear. (Retail $21.00)

Best picks for a neutral pout: Lipstick Queen by Poppy Lipstick in Bare Nude. A full-coverage matte opaque lipstick with 90% pigment. An extremely creamy lipstick that glides on smooth and moisturizes. (Retail $20.00)

Nails:
Finally, yet importantly, a beauty routine is not complete without a perfect manicure and this season it is all about geometric shapes and designs, forgotten is the traditional French manicure and straight lines. Also trending this fall for your couture claws, is the repeating trend of the matte finish. Popular colors for your matte-finish manicure are maroon, black and mustard.

Best picks for nail care: Butter London’s Matte Finish. This matte finish top coat will create a shine-free matte appearance to any nail lacquer. (Retail $19.00) Also from Butter London, the nail lacquer in Cheeky Chops is a wonderful shade of mustard that is perfect for fall. (Retail $15.00)

For a dark, wine hued nail, look no further than OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark gel color. (Retail $9.00)

Remember that fall is a time of celebration. Do not take yourself too seriously and take time to enjoy fashion. Every girl loves to play dress-up and with the delicious options available this season, there is limitless options in feeling and looking your best.

Queen B Dominates the Throne: A Look Inside the Fashion of Beyoncé’s Visual Album – Part One

I guess her way wasn’t so crazy after all. Hitting just shy of one million sales her first weekend, her strategy, though risky, was on point with her end goal. The world is still buzzing over its release, and Runway is here to bring you the scoop on the fashion seen within the 17 spectacular videos that complemented the project.

A team of six strong, the fashion pros styled B into looks varying from ‘Beyoncé from the hood’ to the most glamorous couture pieces we’ve seen B rock thus far. Stylists Ty Hunter, Karen Langley, B. Akerlund, Racquel Smith, Marni Senofonte and Lysa Cooper were all brought aboard to create one-of-kind looks that transformed Beyoncé into every character she dreamed of playing when portraying each song.

The album opens with the mid-tempo anthem “Pretty Hurts”. In the video, Bey transforms into a retro beauty queen wearing a bold yellow Norma Kamali bathing suit. Later she reappears during a beauty-queen meltdown, and although she is throwing a tantrum submerged in water, she still appears ravishing in a deep V-neck, blue beaded Georges Chakra gown.

Pretty Hurts Norma Kamali Suit

Pretty Hurts Georges Chakra

For “Haunted”, an eclectic urban track, she debuts one of the most dramatic, almost Madonna-esque, looks of the entire project and we are in love with the whole thing. Dark, dramatic makeup compliments the finger waves she dons with Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko’s silk jumpsuit in black and white. The lavish mansion backdrop leads us to wonder if this is what a Friday night at home looks like for the Carters.

Haunted Ulyana Sergeenko

“Drunk In Love” is a duet with none other than Mr. Carter himself. The video is a gorgeous black and white visual of their love and her wardrobe is limited to an itty-bitty vintage Eres black bikini covered by a sheer dress by Wendy Nichol. Jay-Z himself was insistent that she keep it simple and ditch the wardrobe changes, Bey also brings out her rapping skills for a verse. The smoky eyes and simplicity of the sandy beach backdrop heighten the sensuality of an already hot video.

Drunk in Love Drunk in Love 3

“Blow”, produced by power trio Timbaland, Timberlake and Pharrell Williams, is a neon spectacle of delectable throwback fashion. DKNY printed leggings officially make their comeback, paired with a Versace tiger-print yellow coat at the videos opening, transitioning into a feminine and floral printed bra top and high-waisted short shorts ensemble. Possessing a fun and funky feel of the eighties, it was the make-up that caught the most attention. Black-lights, glow in the dark manicures and neon lips? Only in Bey’s world.

Blow Blow 2

We thank Beyonce for making “No Angel” for the ensemble she chooses for walking her dog. A luxurious white fur, white body suit and Louboutin’s? Yes, please. The breathy, slow track depicts that no one in a relationship is perfect. Moral of the story here kids? Even angels in white mink can be flawed

No Angel No Angel 2

The fashion pieces in “Partition” are by far some of the most glamorous, and risqué, of all the videos. Beyonce portrays a showgirl, rocking’ barely there netted and beaded bodysuits . The pièce de résistance is the breathtaking Christian Lacroix corset, dripping with crystals that was paired with Chanel laced gloves and Swarovski face mask.

Partition Partition 2

The video closing out Part One of our Beyonce visual album fashion coverage is “Jealous”. A design by Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko (see “Haunted”) makes another appearance, this time in a high-waisted black corset and lace top that shows Bey hasn’t been lacking any gym time. Studded jewelry by Eddie Borgo is also prominent throughout the video, adding dramatic depth to the softer, lace separates and lending an edge. The scenes at the dinner table makes one wonder if Beyonce is that fabulously flawless during meal time with Blue and Jay-Z?

Jealous Jealous 2

Stay tuned for Part Two of Queen B Dominates the Throne: A Look Inside the Fashion of Beyoncé’s Visual Album, where we will bring you stunning photos and information from “Rocket”, “Mine”, “XO”, “Flawless”, “Superpower”, “Heaven”, and “Blue”. Coming soon to RunwayLive.com!
