Vintage Leather

The bomber jacket was made popular in the 1900s and was traditionally worn by the military fighter pilots. By World War 2 they were given their title, the “bomber”, and were known for being extremely warm in frigid temperatures. When shopping for vintage bombers, look for a piece that still has its sheepskin insulation intact and if you get lucky, you may come across one with original patches that adds to the value and history. Bombers, mostly worn in rich shades of tan or chocolate, pair well with long, neutral camisoles and a pair of printed leggings.

Leather Bomber Jacket

The motorcycle jacket, or the “moto”, when worn in classic black is the most popular style of leather jacket. These are the easiest to find because of the mass amounts made, mostly throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Although they have made a huge comeback on the runway, as of late, vintage moto’s just have a character about them that is hard to replicate. Rocking a zipper or grommet embellished motorcycle jacket with a pair of skinny jeans and chunky black boots is enough to make any girl feels like she is living on the edge.

Leather Moto Jacket

For dressier occasions, there is also the softer, draped lapel leather jacket. This option features a more relaxed silhouette that exudes femininity. It is also a versatile style that can be worn three out of the four seasons because of its lightweight structure. In the spring, you can wear it over a floral dress, and during the fall and winter months, it is the perfect layering piece.

Leather Draped Lapel

Whatever style you may choose, owning a piece of vintage leather is owning a piece of fashion history. So go ahead, slip into your timeless ensemble, and make your mark.

Designer Spotlight: Carrie Forbes

Her new shoe line, hand-woven from Moroccan raffia, is truly exquisite in design. The time-intensive passion project truly shows Forbes love of this original technique for creating footwear. With each pair taking a full day to make, the process incorporates laborious water and oil treatments before the shoe is woven by hand, insuring maximum comfort to its wearer. “I have always been drawn to anything handcrafted. It requires deep skill and concentration, and the result is always a soulful and curated look as opposed to machine made products.” Forbes states. “I love watching the artisans execute the designs in complete silence and profound contemplation, which I find adds a peaceful element to our usually stressful business. Having lived in Italy and through my travels, I have found numerous resources which continue to inspire me, whether in remote factories in the Tuscan hills, or in the spirited weaving villages of Marrakech and Casablanca.” There is just something about her love of the craft, and infusion of peace in a busy world, that makes her line that much more beautiful.

Carrie Forbes Flats

After enjoying the success of her previous handbag launch, (Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts were among stars to carry her bags), Forbes moved to Italy to hone her skills in creating luxury goods. Having free-lanced at top fashion houses such as Armani, Fendi and Ferragamo, among others, it was on her trip to Morocco that she was inspired to create her new line. Created in a mostly neutral palette, Forbes incorporated a splash of sapphire blue into the line adding vibrancy to the collection that is perfect for spring.

Carrie Forbes Shoes

With past rave reviews from the press for her handbags, Forbes is no stranger to the spotlight for her creations. Stores in the US have already placed their orders for the new line and her handbags have remained a popular trend. This coming spring will bring a renewal and a fresh start for a well-seasoned designer, and Runway is looking forward to seeing where her shoes will lead her on this new journey.

How To (And How Not To) Layer This Winter Season

First, let us start with the basics. When the temperature drops and we send our spring and summer wardrobes packing for the season, there are a few pieces to keep around that will be beneficial when layering your winter ensembles. Basic t-shirts and tanks work well when worn under chunky sweaters and knit dresses. Your ankle boots work year round, as do your miniskirts. Pairing a mini with leggings or tights and a cashmere sweater looks festive and fun for a holiday party. Throw on a scarf and you have got yourself a complete outfit.

Before we go any further, there are a few simple rules when it comes to layering that can make your fashion statement a hit or a miss…

Simple Do’s & Don’ts:

DO
Keep it simple. While staying warm is key, do not over do it with too much outerwear. A thick, warm trench or pea coat works well to keep your body heat in but can be removed to reveal a lighter outfit once you are inside.

DON’T
Wear just one color. When you layer, it is easy for eyes to get lost in a sea of fabric if it is all one shade. While there are exceptions to this rule, try to mix it up. Alternatively, if you must stick to one color, choose different shades, think of a gradient. For example, a pair of charcoal trousers worn with a silvery grey turtleneck and a black coat is a better choice than a gray pantsuit, gray coat and gray boots. A little effort will go a long way.

DO
Mix up fabrics. Layering is all about texture. Each piece should stand out against the others. Try a combination of a wool coat, cashmere sweater and leather skinny pants or a cotton tee, a fur lined jacket and denim jeans. For eveningwear, satin gowns pair beautifully with fur or faux fur and long sleeve gowns are very popular this season, eliminating the need for a coat, and a stop at the coat check, all together.

DON’T
Don’t be afraid to play with patterns. Just like the importance of texture, prints and patterns can add character to your ensemble. A fun printed pair of leggings or trousers can be a good contrast to a bold solid sweatshirt and plaid always works in shades such as red, navy or hunter. Other big prints this season: paisley, animal prints and houndstooth.

DON’T
Bulk Up. One of the biggest mistakes many people make when layering is that they layer the top and bottom too heavily. It is important when choosing your pieces to maintain your shape and style. If you are going to wear a chunky sweater or oversized coat, keep the bottom simpler. Leggings, tights or skinny jeans work best for balance. And vice versa, with this seasons baggy trousers, it is best to pair them with a fitted cashmere sweater or a tank and fitted denim jacket. Another option is to belt bulky trenches, sweaters and knit dresses, so that you don’t lose your figure. Steering clear of all of the tempting holiday treats will help you in this area as well.

DO
Accessorize! One of the best parts of layering is the accessories that go along with it. Scarves, boots, handbags and chunky jewelry are the reasons I count down to late fall. It is a great way to add color to a basic color palette if you have yet to experiment with an electric pink trench. Do keep in mind, that the same rules apply here as with the clothing pieces. Choose only a couple that will compliment your outfit. Too many accessories can make you look over-done. Less is more, even in winter wear.

If you keep things simple, it is easy and fun to construct a winter wardrobe that is both versatile and functional. For work, a nice crisp button down and a textured or patterned short sleeve sweater looks put together with a tailored pair of trousers. For after dinner drinks you can lose the sweater and add a colorful chunky necklace in a deep jewel tone, extra points if you swap out the office pumps with some sassy strappy heels.

Layering can be a creative way to think outside the box while adding some fun new pieces to your wardrobe. Keep it simple, let your unique style shine through year round and remember, it is possible to remain fashionable and fabulous, even on the dreariest days of winter.

Civic Duty Shoes Are Fashionable, Charitable

But Civic Duty’s story starts with CEO Steven Weinreb. As a young boy growing up around his uncle’s men’s clothing store, Weinreb could not wait to finally get the chance to work in his uncle’s store and get a real taste of the fashion industry. Once old enough, he dove right in and began working for his uncle and was well on his way to his dream job. Fashion never seemed like work to him. “I just enjoyed working,” he says. “And because it was something I loved to do, it wasn’t work. It was the fashion element that I loved!”

After years of working in the fashion industry, owning his own mortgage company, producing footwear for Ecko Unlimited and working as head of sales for British athletic line Gola, Weinreb became a victim of the economic downturn of 2008, finding himself jobless and a bit hopeless. With his wife’s encouragement, he was able to “reset himself” and revisit an idea he had had about making shoes out of a paper-like material. That material was Tyvek, which is a lightweight, sustainable, and water resistant material that while looks like paper, is extremely durable and is used in construction as a water barrier wrapping for homes. It is also the same material used to make FedEx envelopes.

After much experimentation, he was able to come up with the technology to successfully manufacture shoes out of Tyvek, and thus Civic Duty footwear with fun, vibrant colors and a look of cool, edgy flair was made a reality. However, his recent experience of being burned by the economy had left its mark on him.

“It was at that point that I became determined to develop a business that would be socially, fiscally and environmentally friendly,” says Weinreb. “I wanted a business that would be inspiring to others, be beneficial for Americans and be affordable and of course, awesome.”

Not only are Civic Duty shoes made of an eco-friendly material, but each year an exclusive shoe is made with 100% of the proceeds going to a social cause benefiting those in the US. Every year, Civic Duty will choose a different social cause to donate to, and as “co-conspirators,” shoppers are encouraged to suggest a cause for consideration. It is a part of their “Conspire to Inspire” campaign, which encourages civic-minded Americans to come together to benefit our country and create a sense of community.

Introducing Musician Paige Nichols!

We are so excited to hear your new music. Tell us about your new sound.

Thank you. We’re super excited about the new music as well. For these songs, I really wanted to focus on making music that I love and that I’m passionate about. I finally stopped worrying about what people would think and wrote from a really honest place…. And I think it worked. I would describe the new songs as soul/rock/pop. I’d say if… Alicia Keys, Stevie Nicks, and Joan Jett has a love child, It would be my new sound.

Is there a specific song you are excited for fans to hear? Why?

I can’t wait for you to hear burn. That song is very special to me. When we wrote it, we were speaking about how sometimes fires get so big that they can’t be put out, that the only option is to let them burn out. Sometimes that’s true in a relationship that gets so intense you feel like you can’t just end it, instead you have to let it naturally fade. I was feeling some real passion when I wrote that song and I think that’s why the song has resonated with the audiences at my shows so much.

Is there anything in particular that inspires you to write music?

I tend to write songs that are very personal to me and what I’m going through or thinking about at the time I’m writing the song… So I’d say I’m inspired by people that spark strong feelings in me- love, passion, hurt, etc.

As you may know, we are a fashion magazine. How would you describe your style?

I love fashion! I’d say my personal style is bohemian rocker—A little hippie…A little rock. I love lace and fringe. I love leather and I can’t lie- I love a high-waisted short any time of year.

What is one accessory or clothing item you cannot live without?

My clothes and favorites can change with my mood, but one standard that I always love are rings. I love big rings. I just got this really amazing gold handpiece that I’m just in love with. It makes every outfit look better!

Who are some of your favorite designers? Favorite trends?

Some of my favorites are Houghton, Novella Royale, American Gold, Stella McCartney and Zac Posen.

Within your career, you must have had some long days recording in the studio. If you could only bring one beauty product out of your trailer to have on you, what would it be?

Ohh. That’s a good question! Are you sure I can only bring one? I love my beauty products, so this is a tough one, but I’d have to say my eye cream. For long studio days, I find the Kiehl’s creamy eye treatment super moisturizing.

What is next for you?

I am very focused on introducing my new music to my fans and the world. I’m really excited about Burn and right now, I can’t wait to go on a journey with this EP and see where it takes me! I’m always in the studio writing new songs, but in 2014, I plan on taking this music on the road for a U.S. tour. Dates to follow!
