Andrea Powell talks Ender's Game, Harrison Ford, Fashion

We are so excited to see Ender’s Game on the big screen. Tell us about your role and how you landed it.

I play Theresa Wiggin, the mom of Peter, Valentine, and Ender Wiggin (the movie’s central character). Theresa and her husband are brilliant scholars and researchers who were allowed by the government to have a third child—Ender–in hopes that he would be a useful member of the International Fleet. Theresa is a mother through and through, devoted to keeping her family together while trying to understand and respect the dictates of the government. I won the role through an audition process that included a pretty extensive audition/work session with writer/director Gavin Hood. He really put me through my paces- guiding me through different levels of emotion in the audition scenes, asking questions about how I saw Theresa and her struggles, and then taking it all and bringing it down to a simple, simple performance. I was so nervous when I walked in, but working with Gavin and feeling how collaborative he is made me much calmer…as calm as you can be in that situation I suppose. Auditions are never fun, but this one felt more like a rehearsal.

Is there a specific scene you are excited for fans to see?

I can’t talk about specifics, unfortunately, but I will say that I’m excited for fans to see the version of the future world that this movie presents. We’re so accustomed to seeing science fiction movies with cold, harsh, purely technological environments. The future world in Ender’s Game is beautiful—a world worth saving.

The book is very teenager heavy, as one of the only adults in the film, how was it working with Harrison Ford and Viola Davis?

Amazing. They’re both such pros, but also incredibly down to earth. Viola and I are about the same age, so we bonded over the challenges of being of-a-certain-age in Hollywood (and happily doing our best to redefine it). Harrison has just seen and done it all, but always generous with a compliment, encouragement, or a joke. I have a particularly emotional scene, and when it was over he stopped me on our way off the set to tell me a blonde joke/story (with him playing all the parts) just to lighten the mood. Very Han Solo. 🙂

As you may know, we are a fashion magazine and we hear you recently attended some New York Fashion Week shows. How was it?

I love Fashion Week, and it’s truly awe-inspiring to be in the middle of it. To experience the cutting edge of fashion and to see first-hand the looks that we’ll be seeing on the street in the months ahead is incredibly exciting. I’m a huge fan of Carmen Marc Valvo and the elegance, sophistication, and womanliness of his clothes. So to be on the front row of his show at Lincoln Center and see the details of his Spring 2014 collection—from the shimmer of the technology-inspired lace to the black tips on the white nails of his models—was a dream come true.

We noticed you are a big traveler. What are some of your beauty and fashion must-haves on the road or in the air?

Moisture can be hard to come by but is absolutely essential to surviving travel days, so water, water, water. That extends to products, too, so if I’m going somewhere where I know my skin will be sensitive (like the cold) I swear by Dr. Haushka Rose Day Cream. I was actually introduced to this by my makeup artist on Ender’s Game—I had just come from a vacation at Winter Carnival in Quebec City, and my skin was feeling the week of freezing wind and snow. The Rose Day Cream soothed my skin like nothing else could, and now I don’t go anywhere without it. I’m also a fan of Rosebud Salve and Genes Vitamin E Crème, which I buy by the tub.

Who are some of your favorite designers? Favorite trend?

Carmen Marc Valvo, of course. Prabal Gurung has some fantastic shapes. I love Julia Jentzch’s use of beautiful fabrics and figure-flattering cuts. Clover Canyon’s prints are so much fun—I wore a two-piece for a photo shoot that had white tigers and flowers all over it, which just made me smile. My taste in fashion is classic but a little adventurous, so I always love something that has a little twist to it. I’m also pretty active and work out, so clothes have to respect real bodies as well. I appreciate that more and more designers are offering shapes that work well on athletic builds.

Within your career, you must have had some long days on set. If you could only bring one beauty product out of your trailer to have on you, what would it be?

I don’t guess coffee is considered a beauty product, is it? In that case, I think I’d go for Burt’s Bees Lip Balm. Especially if you’re going through a lot of makeup and lip color changes in a day. It’s a lifesaver that can make everything just feel better.

What is next for you?

I appeared in the new CW series, The Originals, this fall. Then during the holidays I’m playing Cheri Oteri’s sidekick in Christmas in Conway, which is premiering on ABC on December 1st.

GETTING TO KNOW REBECCA MARSHALL

Your new movie Life Tracker (available on iTunes) sounds very intriguing. Tell us how you got involved and why you chose this as a project you always wanted to work on behind the camera.

Life Tracker came to me through one of the producers on the film. I was in New York at the time and I read the script and loved it right away. It was not your typical Hollywood movie. When I got back to LA I met with the director Joe McClean and heard how he wanted to shoot it and was sold. It’s not a movie for everyone and I understand that but Matt, Barry and myself (the three leads) all came on board because we really wanted to do something different in film making. I came on as a producer because I had been wanting to produce something for a while but was looking in a smaller budget range so as not get in over my head. When this came my way I thought “This couldn’t be more perfect.” Joe McClean was such a great director and he did such a fantastic job working with all of us.

I never really had interest in woking behind the camera until the last couple of years. Our industry is changing so much and a lot of actors are making their own projects now and becoming more creatively involved with the process to ensure their safety as well.

Actors don’t make the money they used to unless your doing blockbuster movies. A lot of actors are working for less because they love their craft and just want to work. Along with this, which is the positive side is that we as actors are starting to have more control and making projects that probably would not have been made ten years ago.

We hear you are up in Canada shooting a new series, “Arctic Air.” Please tell our readers a little bit more about that series and your character.

Arctic Air is an hour adventure drama, set in Yellowknife about renegade bush pilots in the North. I play “Lindsay Gallagher” who is new to the town. She’s a smart cop and extremely tough with an MMA background, but she cares a lot about the locals. Lindsay joins forces with the Arctic Air in order to form a stronger team of SAR. (Search and Rescue) The show has a lot of action and working on it has been one of the best experiences I’ve had in my career so I will be sad when the season is over.

As we are a fashion and beauty magazine, what are you go to items in your wardrobe and in your make-up bag.

During the day my go to always is t-shirt and scarf. I love that I can throw on a plain T Shirt and jeans and accessorize it with a different scarf. I also seem to live in my Isabel Marant sneakers. They are so comfortable. Especially when traveling a lot.

My make-up bag will always have Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturizer (I can’t live with out it) and Kiels clear lip balm.

I am a huge product girl lol I am always telling the female crew on set what they need to be using for cream, SPF’s and make up products. Also what supplements to be taking for their hair, nails etc.I always do my research and then once I find the perfect product I am committed for life.

My friends always said I should start a beauty product blog.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, tell us some of the things you are most thankful for.

As always I am extremely thankful for my family. I don’t see them as much as I would like too but they are always there for me and they know how to pick me up when I am feeling down or knock me down when I am feeling high. : )

I am very thankful for the life I have gotten to live. I always know that even when I have extremely tough days. They are not nearly as tough as some one elses might be. And I am so grateful to the friends I have. I have such an incredible group of people in my life. I never expected to be where I am today with the people I have in my corner.

What are you looking forward to most in 2014 besides the premiere of your next movie Raze?

Raze will be interesting to see in theaters. I am excited for it. I am also excited to start a new project and stay happy and healthy and working hard. I am always happiest when I am being creative or traveling so lets hope that 2014 is filled with both of those things.

Let our readers know where they can find you on social media.

Okay here it goes… I am on Twitter and Instagram at @becksinla and my Facebook is rebeccamarshallfanpage and I now have a tumblr account which is my favorite! It’s under Rebecca Marshall and its “These are a few of my favorite things…” I have a Beauty Product section in it 😉

Melin Crafts Fine-Quality, Impecabbly Crafted Headwear

Melin, derived from the word milliner, a person who creates hats, has been seen on the heads of countless celebrities, MVPs, musicians, and actors such as Chris Johnson, Mike Posner, and even Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld. With hats starting from $150 and upwards to more than $1,000, Melin has raised the bar on standards in quality. Using only the most prestigious materials such as doeskin wool, napa leather, pig suede, and even diamonds, Melin takes pride on their strict quality control ensuring 32 points of hand inspections per cap.

Of course, with their designs reminiscent of Italian high fashion and a mixture of Corey’s love of classic sports hats and Brian’s background in the street and skate culture, stunning fabrics, details down to the smallest point, (each hat has a hidden “besom” stash pocket, custom stainless hardware, and moisture-wicking interior lining) they have caught more than just the eyes of headwear aficionados. “The toughest part is the mere volume of people out there trying to copy or spin you off all the time,” says McDonell.

Their solution? Never sweating over the competition and packaging their hats in a handsome, hard travel box with a certificate of authenticity mounted within each one.

With goals of making the world’s best hats and expanding their company with secret projects, (I’ll let you in on one…premium beanies) Melin is set to take the throne as the new king of luxury headwear. And why can’t they? As the Melin motto declares, “Because We Can.”For more information, check out their website at www.melinbrand.com

Getting to Know Orange is the New Black Selenis Leyva

We are such big fans of Orange is the New Black. Tell us about your role and how you landed it.

I play the feisty, sassy Gloria Mendoza. I got called in by casting director Jen Euston, to read for another role on the show. I didn’t book that one, but got a call a couple weeks later offering me Gloria.

The show is breaking boundaries both with Netflix and the content. Were you nervous for the show to debut on Netflix? Are you surprised by the reaction?

I wouldn’t say I was nervous about it debuting on Netflix. I just didn’t know what to expect. I knew Jenji Kohan had amazing success with Weeds, so I knew it was going to be pretty good. But this entire experience on this show and the critical acclaim and audience reaction has been an amazing and lovely surprise!

As you may know, we are a fashion magazine and we hear you recently attended some New York Fashion Week shows. How was it?

Fashion week is always so magical! One of my favorite things that happens in NY. I had to work every day of this year’s fashion week! I am not complaining! I did get to attend some parties and meet great designers. I attended Theia’s presentation and loved it! I love fashion! Meeting designers recently has been a huge perk this show has given me! I’ve also worn amazing dresses thus far on red carpet events. HEAVEN!

On the show your character doesn’t get to show off much personal fashion sense. How would you describe your personal style?

I am not afraid to switch things up, in fact, I have to. My style varies along with my mood. I am not afraid of prints I adore them. Recently, I met Nikki Poulos and I was immediately drawn to her use of color and patterns. I love clean lines and subtle looks as well. I love it all. Edgy, sexy, clean, smart, sophisticated, kick ass, fun, all words that sum up what I look for at any given time when matching what I feel to what I wear!

Who are some of your favorite designers? Favorite trend?

I am a huge fan of BCBG, I adore Valentino, Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang,Theia, Lipsky, Calvin Klein, Carmen Marc Valvo. They are all amazing! I could go on and on! As far as trends I love maxi dresses and adore leather. For me, a form fitting white blouse paired with jeans or pencil skirt is always right too!

Within your career, you must have had some long days on set. If you could only bring one beauty product out of your trailer to have on you, what would it be?

Bring that powder! Too much shine on any face doesn’t work! haha

Regarding Fashion, who was your favorite role to play to date, and why?

I did the pilot for Dirty Sexy Money, and that was just lovely! I played a detective and wore the most amazing burberry trench coat! The fit was divine!
