Victoria Konefal Interview

You looked excited for your Runway Magazine shoot, tell us about your favorite look?

I loved the red oversized dress with the yellow glasses, I felt very Posh Spice.

Who is your favorite designers for red carpet?

Recently I’ve been loving Bronx and Banco! Their dresses are so unique and detailed, they always make me feel like a princess.

Tell us about your personal style?

It’s very East Coast. My color scheme tends to be really dark. I like wearing black, gray, white, and red. I live in leather, sweatpants, and hoodies. Sneakers are my life. My personal style is very laid back and sporty.

What is like on the set of a soap opera?

It’s incredible! The pace we work at is so fast, which makes it feel very professional but in the coolest way possible. Everyone is always smiling and laughing but we always get our work done.

Tell us about your funniest moment on set?

I forgot to shave my legs the night before I had to wear a mini skirt. The funny part was me frantically shaving my legs in my dressing room sink as they were calling my name for set. It was a private moment, but I wish I had it recorded. The look on my face was priceless.

What kind of music do you like?

Every kind. But I primarily listen to Hip-hop, rock music, and classic 80’s tunes.

Got any pets?

I have one Miniature Schnauzer named Lola. She acts like a bunny/goat/puppy hybrid. She’s an angel.

Tell us about your favorite shoes?

My black thigh high boots by Vince. I’ve worn them every day for the past week. If I could sleep in them I would.

What is like filming a horror movie? Were you ever scared on set for real?

I was never scared when we were filming because I knew it wasn’t real. However, there was this one moment where our director was showing me clips off of his phone while a scary clown stood right behind me so that when I turned around I would get frightened. It worked.

Tell us about your family and growing up?

My family means everything to me. Growing up with European parents in America was interesting because I learned European customs from them while learning American customs from my friends at school. I liked having a different world at home. It made me feel special.

What stresses you out the most on set?

Honestly, the process of getting my hair and makeup done. I don’t know why but I always get restless. I guess it’s just because I’m so eager to work.

What advice would you give to people who are camera shy?

Pretend it’s not there. Transport yourself to another world, and try to truly believe it.

What do you have planned for the future?

Travel, work, and dogs.

What are your social media handles?

 I’m @victoriakonefal on all platforms!

Symon interview Questions

What was your favorite look from the photo shoot for Runway?

I think my favorite look was the red two piece outfit with the wet hair look. We had so much fun doing that look! Especially being sprayed with water for the last few shots. So many laughs.

Who is your favorite couture designer?

Currently I am obsessed with Alessandro Michele. What he has done with Gucci has truly been amazing to watch. I love the current, funky, fun element he brought back to Gucci.

What designers do you wear for red carpet events?

I wear high end designers and young upcoming NYC and LA designers who I believe in. I love wearing vintage Saint Laurent suits, The Kooples, Kenzo, Alexander Wang, and Bryan Hearns are a couple I truly love.

What is your favorite go to piece in your closet currently?

My vintage 501 Levi’s! Always look super cute!

Tell us about your new single “Lonely Girl”

Lonely girl was born from experience where a group of people hurt and betrayed me. They were like family to me and they went behind my back and sabotaged a lot for me. One night I went into the studio and we wrote the song pulling from the pain of what had recently happened to me. As we were writing the song we were laying down a demo vocal and in between takes I was crying because it was so painful reliving what I had been going through. When I sent it to my manager that night he said that’s your song, it’s so special. It’s raw emotion that’s so true to me. It’s been so amazing to see how my fans have reacted to this song which is the most authentic one I’ve released to date. It’s currently 45 on the pop chart and I couldn’t feel more grateful for that.

Who is your biggest influence?

Gwen has always been a huge inspiration for me because she is so unique. She never followed what everyone else was doing around her. She was a risk taker and performer that no one could compete with. Like young Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga is a risk taker and such a huge inspiration to me. She is the epitome of an artist.

What’s it like being a radio host on Sirius XM show “Hits 1 in Hollywood”?

I pinch myself every single day that I get to have a platform with over 30 million listeners to be able to have an opinion and be a voice for young women. I love connecting with others and that is definitely an important quality to have as a radio host. When you’re speaking to so many different types of people and personalities you need to be able to connect with every single person on a different level. It’s truly inspiring to hear some of my biggest influences stories when interviewing them such as Selma Hayek.

What is your favorite type of music?

All music inspires me in different ways. Jazz, classic rock, 70’s funk, 80’s Hair bands, 90’s grunge, and pure pop!

What inspires you?

Independent films, traveling, religion, love, fashion, and daily life.

Do you have any advice for upcoming artists?

Most important thing is honing in on your craft and being amazing at what you do. Practice nonstop and don’t compare yourself to others, keep following your dreams! You have to be willing to work your butt off and social media can be a huge alley to new artists now. YouTube can do huge things for talent.

What’s up next for you?

I have a new song coming out with ChampionsLeak who are some of the most talented writers and producers I have ever met. Can’t wait for you all to hear! I have many new tv and film opportunities that are coming soon which are so exciting. I love the way different formats of art bring out different sides of me as an artist. I’m ready for everything to come my way! Can’t wait for this year.

RUNWAY KIANA VALENCIANO INTERVIEW

What was your favorite look of the shoot?

I don’t think I can settle on just one favorite look. Rocky Gathercole, Resty Lagare and Elie Madi prepared such amazing collections and I was so happy to have had the chance to try each of their pieces on.

Like , I almost didn’t feel like myself when I was wearing Elie Madi’s black ball gown. It was quite an experience working with each designer!

Who is your favorite fashion designer?

Among the three, I couldn’t possibly choose. They are all so different and so talented that I can’t really compare them. I would love to work with them again someday soon.

What is your favorite fashion trend?

I’m really drawn to androgynous silhouettes, and unique vintage pieces.

Tell us about your new song.

My latest song “Caught U”, which is part of my EP called GREY under Tarsier Records is about catching a partner cheating and not being phased by it. It’s about realizing you’re better off without someone who takes you for granted.

Who is your favorite singer?

Rihanna, Aaliyah, Jojo, Christina Aguilera, Jhene Aiko are some of the artists I look up to and admire.

What do you do for fun?

I really enjoy the outdoors and being with friends and family, so when I have the time, I do my best to get away from the city life in Manila. When I have the chance, I go to the beach or hike.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you.

I personally think I’m more of an introvert than extrovert. I feel safe being alone with a book, sketch pad or notebook and being able to own my time.

Do you like traveling?

I love to travel. I do prefer warmth over the cold so I usually end up in tropical destinations.

We have beautiful beaches in the Philippines, like El Nido Palawan, Cebu , La Union or Zambales . I’m planning a trip to a beautiful destination in the Philippines called Siargao very soon .

What was your most memorable moment in music?

My most memorable moment in my music career was when I performed my song, “Does She Know” at the MANILA X event in 2017. I’ll never forget it because it was the first time I performed the song after it was released. The crowd went wild and sang along with me.

What is next for you?

I’m currently working on my first full length album, so I’ve been channeling a lot of my creative and emotional energy into my writing. I also have a collaboration coming up with a Filipino clothing brand and I’m so excited because I’ll be able to design my own pieces.

Where can we find you on social media?

You can find me on my website kianavee.com and on Instagram and Twitter under my username @Kianavee.

My music is available on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon and all major online music outlets.

Peta Murgatroyd RUNWAY Magazine Winter 2018 Issue Interview

What was your favorite look you shot today?

Each of the dresses I chose were very different and reflected a different side of my personality. I think the black Elie Madi gown would have to be my favorite though. It speaks class and a little mischief at the same time. I love the covered up feeling from neck to floor, and I’m a HUGE fan of long sleeves. The sexy peek-a-boo cut outs all over the gown are the perfect detailing, so yeah I’m a fan.

Where did you learn to dance?

I learned to dance in Australia , I started at the age of 4. I studied Classical Ballet for 12 and a half years and went to primary and high schools where the ballet program could be incorporated into my everyday scholastic studies. I would start ballet at 8am and then have my first class at 10am, leave school at 3pm and then have Contemporary/Spanish/Russian character dance afterwards until 5pm. I then went home, which was 2 trains and began my homework. Sometimes I was so exhausted my homework was put on the back burner, because I always knew my passion for dance and theatre was so strong. Still I stuck it out and sat my TEE exams, which is entry into University. I passed but deferred my entrance , to pursue my overseas dream of being a ballerina. Unfortunately, I hurt my ankle and had 2 surgeries on it, leaving me not being able to get up onto pointe shoes without pain and discomfort. I then decided to enroll myself in a Salsa class at the local gym, and literally from that day on, I haven’t looked back. I’m in Hollywood, living the dream.

You were born in New Zealand, but raised in Australia. What was the dance culture like there, and how do you compare it to the United States?

I feel that the dance culture in NZ and Australia are much the same to America, just on a lower scale. We have a pinch of the population that the US does, but our love for dance is the same. We have “So You Think You Can Dance”, “Australia’s Got Talent” and “Dancing With The Stars” and they are loved by families in every state of our country. Dance brings joy to peoples living rooms, dance brings smiles to people’s faces, and these shows encourage the youth to get out there and try it. Dance is no longer the lame thing to do. If a guy knows how to dance, it’s incredibly sexy!

You have a lot on your plate between being a new mom, and preparing for your national tour, “Maks, Val & Peta Live On Tour: Confidential!” What’s different for this tour than the ones you’ve done in the past?

Our tour, that we are about to embark on, is unlike any other tour I’ve done. I’ve danced in theatres in every continent of the globe and this might have to be the one I’m most looking forward to, and that’s saying a lot because I’ve conquered Broadway already in 2009. This show has a real, completely  honest, unfabricated storyline. The dances we are choreographing will tell stories about circumstances that we’ve lived through, the good and the bad. The show will lead from where the boys last show (Our Way) ended. Since then Maks and myself are parents to our beautiful son Shai Aleksander, a lot of things have changed in our day to day lives. In fact our world turned upside down, in the best way possible when Shai came into the picture. We are also officially married now! I think the best performances, are ones that come from real life emotions. You will see heartache, triumph, and joy from all of us throughout this show. I get emotional even writing about it, because I know what’s to come and I know, what feelings are going to be resurfacing when I dance every night on tour. Above all, it’s worth a ticket, our cast is phenomenal with some of the best dancers in the world, and we won’t disappoint. Having your own show is such a crazy feeling, I’ve always danced under the restrictions of another choreographer and artistic director, now, I am those people and it’s kind of cool.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, do you have any special plans with your husband?

Honestly, this will sound boring, but Maks and I will be going to dinner at night, and working during the day. This tour takes up all our time and energy and we want it to be the best it can be. I love Valentine’s Day thought, a day to celebrate LOVE! Maks is pretty awesome though and makes it feel Valentine’s Day every day.

You also have a great lifestyle blog, All Things Fam & Glam (http://www.allthingsfamandglam.com/)! What kind of content can our readers find there?

Yes, I get so excited when I talk about my blog. All Things Fam & Glam is what I’ve been wanting to create for years. When I was pregnant I decided to give it a go and it’s been a great success. All Things Fam & Glam is more of an ecosystem that is supposed to benefit all mothers, first time mums and families. I wanted to create a space that is enjoyable and informative for everyone. I wanted to use the knowledge I had gained during my pregnancy and giving birth onwards, to help people with everyday things, like, my favorite baby  items, dressing your bump, the ultimate vitamin regime, how to do your makeup in 5 mins. We talk wellness, beauty, family, and the latest buzz around town. No politics haha! Sharing my experiences has been very therapeutic for me, as becoming a mum can be overwhelming at times.

Tell us about your favorite every day styles!

Right now I’m all about the staples, jeans and white t-shirt. You can never go wrong and you will always be on trend. I love to throw a cool jacket on to spice it up, whether it be leather or a long trench coat, a jacket can definitely transform your look from day to night effortlessly.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I’m terrible for naming a song , but I will know all the words, it’s so weird haha! I love Whitney Houston, Nina Simon and Ella Fitzgerald, but I also love hip hop and can sing the entire Mercy song by Kanye West. I usually lean towards songs I can get down to, and songs Maks and I can dance to.

Jesse Draper Interview

Runway is celebrating 10 years of worldwide distribution and 20 years in the tech marketplace, but finding something new is a talent of its own. Our media is to celebrate what is good in life and the people that bring those new flavors to us. For those of you whom do not know Jesse she is a key mind helping shape our future with the world of investing by funding women in consumer businesses from  fashion and beauty to healthcare. Jesse has made it her life’s work to change the gender ratio at the CEO level first through her Emmy nominated talk show ‘The Valley Girl Show’ where she was the first talk show to ever make it an initiative to interview 50% women in business and now through her venture capital fund Halogen Ventures. Some of her portfolio companies include: WERK, Flex. Carbon38, BlockCypher, Beautycon & Sugarfina.

Hello Jesse,

You look great today, what are you wearing?

Thanks so much. I depend on Carbon38 for most of my comfortable wardrobe attire, especially while I’m pregnant and larger than usual.  Today I am wearing a red Carbon38 dress from their Passport collection. I also like to spice up my work attire with one of my rental items from Armoire, a great rental service for boss ladies like me. Ambika, the founder is trying to take the pain out of getting dressed and keeping you looking fabulous while saving you time.

Tell us about your daily schedule?

My son wakes me up every morning somewhere between 6AM and 6:30AM and demands a smoothie. He is obsessed with the blender so I usually sleepily make him some kind of smoothie while he yells ‘I want to use the blender smasher’ at me in my sleepy haze (for those of you unfamiliar, that is our technical term for the thing in the vitamix that mashes the fruit to help make a smoothie smooth). I then get dressed for the day and try to do at least an hour of uninterrupted email before the chaos begins. My beauty regimen is so fast because I never know if it will be interrupted by my son, husband or someone else. Then COFFEE.  At that point I head to our Halogen office or to my first meeting. Depending on the day I usually have a meeting or call with one of our companies, am running around town to meet with an investor or speaking at some kind of entrepreneur oriented event. I think I am a pretty typical working Mom.  Today, I had a few back to back networking with other VC funds to share deals.

What is your favorite thing in your closet and why?

I love leather jackets. I definitely collect them. I think my all time favorite item is my All Saints leather jacket, that and the Wonder Woman boots I keep in there. You can really get away with wearing a great leather jacket anywhere and with almost anything. I love it when they are broken in to the point that they fit you like a glove.  I will wear them over dresses, jeans, you name it. I feel like myself when I am in a leather jacket and jeans. If I had it my way, I would be in a great pair of jeans, stilettos and a leather jacket every day.

So, what is on your horizon, what is next?

I just closed my first fund for Halogen Ventures which means I basically collected or raised a pool of money from other investors that is now for investing in women run companies like Carbon38, Armoire, Senreve, Vida all the way to our breast pump company Naya Health and our transportation company Hopskipdrive. I am now focused on investing that money and I see fund 2 on the horizon. I’m also pregnant with my second kid.

What are you most proud of? What is your greatest achievement.

First and foremost, my son. He is 2 and a ball of fun. Professionally, I am really proud to have successfully raised a fund focused purely on investing in women run tech companies. Not many people have been successful doing so in the past. Previously I ran a technology talk show that for 10 years called ‘The Valley Girl Show’. We were nominated for an Emmy which I consider a great achievement in another element of my life. I’m also proud of my ability to fly as not many humans can do that.

What is the best product you ever worked with?

There are so many great ones. One of the products I am most excited about right now is Preemadonna, the first NailBot that prints a picture in under 2 seconds directly onto your nail. You could take a picture of the sunset you are looking at and 2 seconds later have it on your nails. The technology is incredible and I can’t wait for you all to see it in the market.

What do you think of crypto-currency and how to you think RUNWAY will fair with its new ICO (RUNWAY COIN) www.runwaycoin.org opening to the public in February?

I’m so impressed that RUNWAY is going to have an initial coin offering! That is fantastic. It is the way of the future and I think it will make the financial world a simpler place and overall the world will be  better place. We have a great blockchain company called Blockcypher that is like Amazon web services for blockchain and they are doing incredibly well. I am excited to see what happens in the next 5 years.

What schools do you work with?

I try to stay involved in the schools I attended. I went to a small high school called Menlo in Northern California and I went to UCLA for my BA. I now do a lot with UCLA’s entrepreneurship programs and women’s organizations. My mom also went to an all girls college called Smith that I like being involved with as well. She launched a business plan competition there for universities across the country that has done really well.

Do you work on any non-profits? Tell us about them.

I work with an organization called Bizworld that my Dad started when I was in 3rd grade to teach kids about entrepreneurship. It is now in 80 countries and has taught thousands of elementary students how to look at the world as a business. My grandmother has had Parkinson’s disease for 40 years so I am also involved in the Parkinson’s Institute.

What do you drive on a daily basis?

Hopskipdrive because it’s a safe on demand service for kids and childcare. They are the only ‘uber like’ service that fingerprints which terrifies you when you realize who you are getting into the car with in an uber or lyft. I’m a terrible driver. I may be one of the only people you will ever meet who has gotten not one but 2 speeding tickets for going over 110MPH (they were both on the 5 freeway for those of you curious how I can go that fast in LA). I have drastically slowed down since having kids but I still have friends and family who won’t get in the car with me. I’ve gotten a letter from the governor suggesting I stay off the road.

What kind of pets do you have?

I have a King Charles Spaniel named Archie who I consider to be my first born. He has been with me for almost 12 years and I love him so much. I named him Archie after Archie comic books  as I am a huge fan and collector.

If you could only have 1 pair of shoes what would they be?

I prefer to go barefoot. Shoes are overrated. I’m always figuring out how long it is until I can take off my shoes. I take them off under tables, at the movies, at weddings. However, as this is not totally acceptable in my everyday life, I can always count on a great pair of tieks ballet flats because they are as comfortable as being barefoot.

Phillip Keene Interview RUNWAY magazine 2017 Winter issue

What are you up to these days?

I just finished looping a film I shot in early November. Other than that, I’m concentrating on getting myself back into fighting shape. Between seasons or jobs, I like skiing, golfing, surfing, swimming, and yoga. I’m also getting back into the saddle because I feel like horseback riding is a valuable skill. But I’m also looking to develop my own acting opportunities during down time. Creation and recreation sometimes go together.

What designers are you into this season?

It’s hard for me to drive past the Paul Smith store, and that’s more true than ever in 2018. But I’m also finding some fun things coming from Orlebar Brown and Bonobos. For casual, everyday wear, Wil Stiles has short sleeve shirts that don’t make me look like a tourist.  I think the Fred Perry slim fit polos manage to be both laid back and dressy enough for a dinner out in Palm Springs (depending on what you wear with them!). If I were in my twenties though, I’d probably go broke at Gucci right now. I wandered into one of their stores the other day, and it put a big smile on my face. For jeans, I’m loving the way my A.G.s Matchbox fit.

What is your favorite pair of shoes?

I’m tempted to say the orange pair of Swims I probably wear way too much, because those are the ones people notice and, as an actor, I sometimes like a little attention. But, my absolute favorite footwear are these boots from Taft – black wool and leather – that give me style without being in any way uncomfortable. And who doesn’t need a great pair of black shoes?

What about hobbies?

In addition to all the sports, I’m an avid collector of Pan Am memorabilia: posters, badges, china from first class, menus, blankets, dozens and dozens of uniforms, matchbooks, travel bags, decks of cards, historical records, designs of the jets, you name it! As someone who used to fly for Pan Am, I have an attachment to the company that is both professional and deeply personal. It’s the job during which you might say I came of age. Collecting bits and pieces of Pan Am is a bit like sorting through my youth. It also helps me remember that I was lucky enough to be a small part of a great story.

Tell us about your time at UCLA?

I went to college in my thirties. It was interesting being surrounded by younger people all the time, but odds are I was a lot more focused on learning than I would have been in my twenties (when I couldn’t resist invitations to parties and nightclubs). I found writing papers extraordinarily difficult. I would almost rather swim with sharks than compose another essay. I ended up getting two degrees, one in history and one in art history. I have a recurring nightmare where a UCLA administrator pulls me out of class and says, “We’re very sorry, but we made a mistake and you shouldn’t be here.” I think that pretty well covers how I felt about myself during that time. I grew up in financially challenging conditions and neither of my parents had ever gone to college. Getting those degrees helped me realize I could do more than I thought I could. It gave me the courage to try acting, which was something I had wanted to do all my life.

What is it like doing so many episodes? What are the challenges?

Filming over two hundred hours of television and playing the same character means you have to keep finding ways to make it fresh without stepping outside the lines you established in the beginning. Also, actors mostly learn the job in public. The hardest thing on earth is leaving the set knowing – absolutely certain – that you didn’t do as well as you would have liked. You have to accept it very fast, and come back in the next day, let go of all your internal criticism, and give it your best shot again.  If you’re lucky, and you try hard, you get better as you go along. I put my whole heart into the role of Buzz Watson, and I hope I made the most of the opportunity. The last thing I’ll say is that I am nothing at all like Buzz, but I will always be grateful to him. That sounds odd, but it’s the truth.

What is your favorite suit?

You would have to knock me unconscious to take one of my Paul Smith’s from my closet, but my favorite suit is a bespoke number I helped design using elements available at Klein Epstein Parker. They custom make every part of the garment according to your own measurements and specifications. And I love the way people react to it.

Do you like watches?

I’m not a jewelry person, although I’ve given in a bit to the bracelet trend. I admit to liking a Deco inspired Bulova and a Rip Curl I wear surfing. Is that too low end? I have a Mont Blanc for dressier moments but, honestly, I don’t like to wear watches at formal events because I hate to be seen checking the time. And I will!

Tell us about your home front.

I’m married and we divide our time between L.A. and the desert. We also love traveling to Europe – when practical – and New York during the fall or spring – if we can get a good rate on a nice room. No children, but four godsons and two goddaughters, and they really do make up an important part of our daily routine. In addition to family, we have a lot of Closer/Major Crimes alumni in our lives, plus a large circle of extended friends. We are lucky, lucky, lucky. I am at a place where my needs are mostly easily met, I’m in great health, and my biggest challenge is how to achieve artistic goals. Oh. And how to convince my husband to separate his laundry from his dry cleaning. I want to believe he’s trying, but after living with him for twenty-five years, I’m beginning to have doubts.

Do you do any charity work?

I don’t think of it as charity work, exactly, because that’s mainly done by the people who run these amazing foundations, but I volunteer a lot with the Sunshine Kids, a group that brings children battling cancer together so that they can meet other youngsters fighting the same fight. We take them to Disneyland, help them get sworn in as police officers for a day, and go with them to the beach. Working with the Sunshine kids is an amazing experience. G.W. Bailey, who played Lt. Provenza, is the President of their foundation, and J.K. Simmons, who played Asst. Chief Pope in The Closer is their spokesperson. I also contribute to Covenant House and their mission to help young homeless kids. And I’m on the Director of Communications for the Board of the Pan Am Museum Foundation, which presents exhibits at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island.

10 Reasons Sex Is Good for Your Health and Longevity

PR Newswire:

“I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself.”

This old wisecrack is credited to American late-night talk show host and comedian Johnny Carson. Sorry, Johnny, it may be funny, but you’ve got it wrong. Although giving up unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking and rich food will certainly improve your health, giving up sex will not.

In fact, when you’re in a healthy relationship, sex is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Here are 10 reasons why.

It eases stress.

Does your relationship need a 'love drug'?

Dopamine, which impacts the brain’s pleasure and reward centers; endorphins, which can reduce pain and stress; and oxytocin, also known as the cuddle hormone, are all released during sex, with higher levels after orgasm.

It boosts mood.

Oxytocin promotes feelings of well-being and happiness. And you don’t have to boink like bunnies to feel that way.
A study of 30,000 American men and women between 1989 and 2012 found that having sex at least once a week in a committed relationship was enough to make people happy.

Want more sex? Get better sleep. Want better sleep? Have more sex

It’s more than the coital act that brings benefits. Studies of older adults found that holding hands, hugging, kissing and mutual stroking also contribute to a greater quality of life.
Getting it on can ward off depression, too. Studiesshow that men and women who have intercourse with their partners have greater satisfaction with their mental health. (Unfortunately, the benefits didn’t extend to masturbation.)
But the boost doesn’t appear to work for casual sex or hookups. One study of nearly 7,500 US college students across 14 public universities found that those who had more hookups had lower levels of happiness and self-esteem, and higher levels of depression and anxiety.
In contrast to the notion that men are more likely to be OK with casual sex, the researchers found no differences between the sexes.

It improves sleep.

Prolactin, a hormone that relaxes you, is also released after an orgasm. The combination of prolactin and all the rest of the “feel-good” hormones are why most people sleep better after sex.
To get the highest amount of prolactin, science suggests having an orgasm with a partner if possible. Research shows that the level of prolactin in both men and women after intercourse can be “400% greater than that following masturbation.”
Unfortunately, sleep deprivation — which affects a third of Americans — can also impact sexual satisfaction. A study of nearly 10,000 women ages 50 to 79 found that those who got fewer than seven to eight hours of sleep a night were less likely to be sexually active. The older the woman, the more likely she was to report less sex when sleep-deprived.

Sacrificing sleep? Here's what it will do to your health

Sleep disorders can play a role. For example, men and women with obstructive sleep apnea, characterized by loud snoring and periods of breathing cessation, report a less active sex life.
Men are especially hard-hit. To produce testosterone, men need a good period of restful, uninterrupted sleep. Without that, they could have lower levels of testosterone and suffer erectile dysfunction.
What happens when sleep is improved? Good news for both sexes: Libido goes up.
According to a 2015 study, women who got a good night’s sleep were more likely to experience sexual desire the next day. In fact, a one-hour increase in sleep duration correlated to a 14% increase in the odds that a woman would engage in sex with her partner.
And researchers at Walter Reed Army Hospital found that using a CPAP machine, a breathing apparatus used to correct sleep apnea, improved sexual function and satisfaction for all men in their study but was especially helpful to those with erectile dysfunction.

It boosts your immunity.

Having regular sex may also help you fight off disease.
Researchers at Pennsylvania’s Wilkes University asked US college students how often they had sex each week and then compared the levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that functions as the body’s first line of defense, in their saliva.

Reasons for avoiding sex are often treatable

Students who had sex once or twice a week had the highest levels of immunoglobulin A: 30% higher than those who had no sex, but also those who had sex three or more times a week. In addition, students who were in longer-term, satisfying relationships had the highest levels of the antibody.
That makes sense when you consider research on social support and the immune system. A study of 276 healthy volunteers at the University of Pittsburgh found that those with the most diverse social networks, including not just lovers but family, friends and organizations, were the least likely to catch colds.

It decreases risk of prostate cancer.

Good news for men: Frequent ejaculation appears to be linked to a lower risk for prostate cancer.
A 2004 study published in the British Medical Journal studied the sex life of over 50,000 American males between the ages of 40 and 75. Men reporting 21 or more ejaculations a month were less likely to get prostate cancer than men who ejaculated four to seven times a month. A follow-up study published in 2016 showed the same results.

It improves heart health.

Men who make love at least two times a week are 45% less likely to have heart disease than men who have sex only once a month or less, according to a study by the New England Research Institute.
The 17-year study, which began in 1987, tracked the sex lives of over 1,000 men age 40 to 70; the researchers eliminated other risk factors from the results, such as age, weight, cholesterol and blood pressure.

Why some make so much noise during sex

Women also reap the heart-healthy benefits of sex. A 2016 study found that women who said they had frequent, extremely satisfying sex had a lower risk of hypertension, a common precursor to heart disease.
“Good sexual quality may protect older women from cardiovascular risk in later life,” said study author Hui Liu, an associate professor of sociology at Michigan State University.
That makes sense, said sex and relationship educator Laura Berman, because of the way women view their sexual relationships.
“It’s not so much the number of orgasms or how vigorous the sexual experience that predicts a woman’s sexual satisfaction,” Berman said. “It’s how close she feels to the person she is having sex with, through kissing and cuddling as well as orgasms. That is the key to her emotional and physical well-being, which benefits her health and her heart and everything else.”

It enhances intimacy.

Want more affection in your life? Have more sex with your partner.

A series of four studies of committed couples in the United States and Switzerland found that having sex created more affection, not only in the moments after sexual intimacy but hours later, even in couples with children or those married long past the “honeymoon period.”
Moreover, for couples who felt more affection after sex, the effects were still evident six months later.
“The more overall sex they had, the more affection; the less sex they had, the less positive affection,” said clinical psychologist Anik Debrot of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, who led the study.
And the sex didn’t have to be intercourse for there to be positive effects, Debrot said. “Moments that were experienced as erotic or sexually arousing were just as predictive of positive emotions.”
CNN contributor Ian Kerner, a psychotherapist who specializes in sex and couples therapy, agrees. When couples keep the sexual dimension of their relationship alive and intact, “it leads to an overall warming up of the relationship, which includes more touch and non-sexual affection as well as higher level of regard towards their partner,” he said.

It boosts cognition.

How marriage might be linked to lower dementia risk

If you’re looking for a good reason to energize your sex life as you age, here it is.
How marriage might be linked to lower dementia risk
Studies show that keeping your sex life active into old age protects and even improves your brain’s executive functioning and recall. Analyzing data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, British researchers found that sexually active men between the ages 50 and 89 had increased cognitive function, as measured by number sequencing and word recall, even after adjusting for quality of life, loneliness, depression and physical activity.
Women had the same benefit from sex for memory but not number sequencing.
Both men and women who were more sexually active did better on the tests than those who had less sex.
In a follow-up study, the researchers found that having sex at least once a week was highly predictive of improved cognitive functioning, especially verbal fluency.

It limits pain.

Studies have found that sexual activity can reduce menstrual cramps, chronic back and leg pain, even migraines.
A 2013 survey of 1,000 German headache sufferers found that 30% of those with cluster headaches and 60% of those with migraines reported partial or total relief of their pain if they had sex during an episode.
Orgasm researcher Barry Komisaruk of Rutgers University points to research that states “the sensory input produced by vaginal stimulation produces a powerful analgesic effect” and that he says does not interfere with tactile sensitivity.
In a study Komisaruk co-authored with Rutgers sex researcher Beverly Whipple, who coined the term “G-spot,” they found that the pressure of pleasurable vaginal stimulation increased pain tolerance by 40%. When the women came to orgasm, their pain tolerance increased by nearly 75%.

Sex rarely causes hearts to stop, research says

Scientists give the credit to hormones released during sex, like endorphins, which block pain and stress, and oxytocin, the hormone that helps mothers and babies bond and which has pain-relieving properties.

It’s exercise?

Can sex be a form of exercise? Yes, sort of, if you are young and healthy and spend at least 30 minutes doing it.
A study of 20 young healthy couples found that they burned an average of 85 calories for each half-hour romp in bed. Men burned more than women, at about 100 calories versus 69.

“By comparison,” the study authors write, “the level of intensity that is exerted from sexual activity could be higher to that of walking at 4.8 km/h but lower to that of jogging at 8 km/h.”
Still, a man would burn about the same amount of calories in a half-hour of cooking, bartending or driving a truck, while women get the same result from desk work and sitting in meetings.
But which is more fun? Plus, experts point to the other exercise benefits from sex: the stretching of muscles and tendons, the flexing of joints and the increase of respiration, heart rate and blood pressure that in a healthy man or woman can energize the body.
