Malta Fashion Week 2011

“Although Malta cannot yet boast of any high calibre international fashion houses like those found in Paris, London, Milan or New York, this is no reason why we shouldn’t celebrate Maltese fashion in a big way”; this is how event organiser Adrian J. Mizzi announced the launch of the very first edition of the Malta Fashion Week to be held next year. Mr. Mizzi is considered a pioneer in the local fashion scene because of his many connections in the industry since his company Unique Promotions has been organising the prestigious Malta Fashion Awards for the past 13 years.

With his recent appointment representing Malta on the European Fashion Council, he has been encouraged to continue putting a wider and more international dimension to the local fashion industry and this is one of the reasons he and his team are now taking this ambitious step.

Malta’s fashion sector employs thousands of talented individuals from fashion designers to hair stylists, make-up artists, photographers and models. That is apart from a huge number of people working in fashion retail and supporting industries such as stage management, lighting, sound, venue operators, and more. The industry caters for the internal market as well as a large number of foreign agencies that use Malta in filming commercials, movies and TV series. “We want to create a truly national event, where everyone in this industry is celebrated for their talent, their creativity and their dedication to being the very best they can be”, explained Mr. Mizzi. His company is being supported by various local and foreign companies and organizations. The World Fashion Channel (PDF download), which has supported the Malta Fashion Awards for two years running, and the European Fashion Council (PDF download) have already committed to providing direct and indirect professional support in putting up the event.

“We extend an open invitation to anyone even remotely connected with this industry, or who would like to work in this industry in future to come forward”, explained Mr. Mizzi. The concept of The Malta Fashion Week is to put up a series of events at various locations around Malta and Gozo culminating with the Malta Fashion Awards night on Saturday 21st May. These different events and locations will be connected through a common management and promotion thread. Venues being considered for use during the Malta Fashion Week include St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta and Cottonera waterfronts, The Manoel Theatre, MFCC, Republic Street in Valletta and It-Tokk in Victoria Gozo.

“Through The Malta Fashion Week, Malta will gain international exposure in Europe and worldwide on the World Fashion Channel with a potential audience of 1.2 billion viewers worldwide. This sort of publicity will increase awareness about Malta promoting it as a fashion destination.”, concluded Mr. Mizzi.

Audi Fashion Festival 2011

Singapore – Audi Fashion Festival (AFF) returns for its third run with Italian fashion house Missoni as the curtain raiser to the annual event. Themed “Driving Imagination”, this year’s event boasts seven show days and an even more exciting line-up than before with a mix of international Asian names and top-class names from the international world of fashion.

Mr Reinhold Carl, Managing Director of Audi Singapore, says: “Audi has always been committed to Singapore’s fashion industry. As seen through our sponsorship of AFF, we are supporting both established and emerging designers, internationally and locally. At Audi, it is in our DNA to be trend- setters rather than followers. We support designers who share that same vision.

“Audi and fashion is a perfect fit. It is for these reasons that we are in the third year of the fashion festival. Every fashion house has its own philosophy. Likewise, Audi has its own design ethos built on innovation, technology and progression,” added Mr. Carl.

Opening the festival on 13 May with modern Italian glamour and high-fashion, Missoni is famously known for its distinctive patterns and flattering cuts. Guests will be treated to a presentation of Missoni’s Autumn/Winter 2011 collection in the presence of three generations of the Missoni family – the brand’s founder Rosita, her daughter and creative director Angela, as well as Angela’s daughter, the label’s muse, Margherita.

The festival will end on a high note with one of the most anticipated shows of the fashion season – the house of Ungaro will present its Autumn/Winter 2011 collection with its new creative director Giles Deacon at the helm. Named the “Best New Designer” at the British Fashion Awards in 2004, Deacon has also recently won acclaim as “British fashion’s most feted designer” in The Guardian.

Visionary designer Antonio Berardi will also be making his appearance at this year’s festival. While Berardi has always had a celebrity following, with Kylie Minogue opening in his debut show in London Fashion Week in 1995, represents a red-hot renaissance for his cutting-edge glamour. He has recently dressed celebrities such as Megan Fox, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and personal friend, Victoria Beckham.

David Cook winner of American Idol Runway Magazine Feature Video in LA

With a performance background that stretches from his second grade Christmas pageant to breaking records all over the Billboard charts and a new album hitting stores Spring 2011, David Cook is a musical force to be reckoned with. So what’s he currently listening to on his iPod? Right now, it’s all comedy records: Paul F. Tompkins, Maria Bamford and David Cross”, says Cook.

That shouldn’t surprise us. When Runway recently met up with Cook, he was totally relaxed (that, or he’s really good at faking it!) and had a great time playing on the roof with our photographer. We loved being able to get to know this talented musician and fun, down-to-earth guy for an afternoon.

AUDRINA PATRIDGE

Audiences first met Audrina when she was introduced as Lauren Conrad’s wide-eyed roommate on MTV’s The Hills in 2006. Since her “role” on the popular reality show, fans have watched her morph into one of Hollywood’s most graceful, and refreshingly tolerable, crossover entertainers.

After Audrina appeared in more episodes than any other series regular on The Hills, immersed herself in YOBI.tv’s international web talent search, and waltzed with Tony Dovolani on season 11 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, we were thrilled to get word of her latest collaboration with Mark Burnett and VH1. Set to premiere Sunday, April 17th at 9:00 PM ET/PT on VH1, Audrina will give viewers a more personal look at the balancing act of this burgeoning actress’ professional and personal life.

Recently, our spring cover girl discussed her journey from a small town in California to the #12 spot on Maxim’s Hot 100 List – and essentially reawakening the gold bikini fantasy of every male’s inner Jedi.

The Perks and Pitfalls of Holiday Romances

Remember the holidays are emotionally charged times. People can put too much emphasis on relationships any time, but it seems to be especially heightened at this time of year. Putting things into perspective is really important – it is, after all, just another day. Having realistic expectations can be tough for some. Having no expectations at all is ideal; being in the moment and just allowing things to happen can be extremely effective in attracting a little romance. Being confident and self-assured is alluring to the opposite sex.

A number of lovers find romance on holiday vacations rather than at home. When on vacation, you are away from the rat race, are physically and emotionally more relaxed and are open to meeting new people. Getting away from the daily grind can put you in a space that is conducive for falling in love. Exploring exotic new places with someone new can be quite enticing.

Is holiday romance a good idea or is it opening you up for heartbreak? Holiday romances can last a few weeks, years and sometimes even a lifetime. Here are some suggestions to help you decide if a holiday romance is best for you:

Assess the situation and understand your feelings—do you really want a relationship with this person or are you simply avoiding the pain of being alone during the holidays? Is this person someone you can see yourself spending time with on a regular basis? If yes, proceed, but if not, you might want to reconsider.

A holiday fling can make you feel incredible – like you are walking on air and that you are ready to take on anything. But there can be a downside, too, if he’s invested more emotionally than you have. When that happens it can leave you feeling pressured and sometimes smothered or controlled. It is important to leave this situation as soon as possible.

Honesty is always the best policy. Make your intentions known right up front with your holiday fling. Your honesty may squash the possibility of romance but will help you to avoid a nasty breakup down the road.

If you don’t feel the attraction is mutual, don’t feel guilty about calling it quits. Be a woman of integrity – don’t keep a man around for the holidays so that he can ply you with gifts. It’s cruel to lead someone on or to use them as a crutch to get through the holidays.

If you want the relationship to last after the holidays it’s important to stay connected. Make time for the object of your affection daily; distance can make the heart grow fonder as long as you both commit to communication. Long-distance romances have traditionally been difficult to maintain but using technology can keep the flames of love burning. You can now use video-phone technology like Skype or Face Time on the new iPhone. Writing romantic emails and sexy texts to the object of your affection goes a long way, too. Let him know you are thinking about him. It’s important to plan weekends and rendezvous every 6 weeks or so – if too much time passes, loneliness and resentment can set in. Most of the time, long-distance relationships end due to one partner feeling disconnected. But history has shown that long distance love can last for a lifetime.

If you do engage in a holiday romance and suddenly have a change of heart, know that it is ok. Let him know that you had a fabulous time but that you don’t now want to see him after the holidays. Be kind and tactful, and reassure him that you had a great time but that it simply won’t work due to the circumstances. Be very clear and firm that you don’t wish to continue. Should he continue to persist after your discussion, simply do not respond.

In conclusion, I would just like to add that a holiday romance doesn’t have to be just a fling. Make this special new person a part of your life. Introduce your new flame to friends and family, and see how well they fit into your inner circle. Seize the moment, as this could be the beginning of a life-changing experience with someone special. Is it worth the risk? Only you can answer that question. As for me – I think love is always worth the risk.

QA with Randy Wayne

Blessed with a great physique and a face worthy of an Abercrombie and Fitch ad, Wayne frequently plays young high school or college-aged guys. But in reality, Wayne is approaching the big 3-0 and has already helped start a successful production company.

When he’s not working hard at acting or producing, Wayne can probably be found typing away on his Blackberry, playing with his two cats (Beara Grylls and Hetchy) or gearing up for his favorite, “magical holiday” – Christmas. And while he may be thriving in L.A., Wayne says he still hasn’t met people as nice as those from his home state of Oklahoma.

Runway Magazine: What has been your most challenging acting role to date?

Randy Wayne: Physically, it was Honey 2. I’m not a trained dancer, so the three weeks of choreography before shooting was difficult to say the least. Emotionally, it was To Save A Life. The film deals with teen suicide and bullying amongst a gamut of other issues that teens deal with on a daily basis.

R: Have you ever been recognized on the street by a fan? Was it awkward or kind of cool?

RW: Being recognized is always a cool thing. The tough part is when I’m having a rough day, I gotta buck up and put on that happy face. But getting recognized by To Save A Life fans is the best. The film is so touching and uplifting, the responses are always of appreciation for doing the film.

R: Do you have an interest in the fashion industry?

RW: I do. Style can define you. We all get that little excitement when we see something stylish.

R: We’ve seen you in a variety of fashion styles from sweater vests and suit coats to Ed Hardy shirts, and it looks like you’ve got an eye for fashion. How would you describe your style?

RW: I have a pretty laid-back style and I’ve kept it real low key for the most part. I’ve always been more into spending my money on vacations than anything else. However, I’m realizing that I need to start building up the wardrobe because those pictures are forever. That’s a tough thing for a celebrity as well – you can’t wear the same thing more than once. That sucks, that’s a whole new outfit every time we go out.

R: If you could be a fashion designer, what item would you want to be known for?

RW: Probably shoes or jeans. I have the hardest time finding both of these to fit how I like. I would make jeans for body types, not sizes. And as for shoes – holy cow, it’s hard to find good shoes. Period.

R: What character that you’ve played had the best wardrobe?

RW: I have yet to experience a good wardrobe. And let me tell you, I am the easiest actor to work with but when it comes to wardrobe I am a straight up diva. My characters may not have the best clothes but thanks to my bitching they turn out a lot better than they would have if I didn’t speak up.

R: Do you still play any sports?

RW: Yes, yes, yes. I’ve been in a couple of baseball leagues out here and I just competed in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. I’ve run a marathon and I’m training for an ultramarathon – 31 miles! After that run, I’m going back to competing in Master’s swimming.

R: And finally, what’s one life lesson you want to pass onto our readers?

RW: Don’t ever let other people’s opinions define who you are or what you will become. Don’t give away your power!
