Christian Serratos from Twilight New Moon

RUNWAY

COVER GIRL

Christian Serratos

What do you like best about working on “Twilight”?

It has been amazing to be able to meet all of the awesome fans, working with all the incredible people in the cast and getting to meet amazing people in the industry (i.e. Catherine Hardwicke).

What is your most memorable experience on the set?

My first day on the set of “Twilight” was probably the most memorable experience. Just having lunch with Catherine and the whole cast figuring out the process and just getting initiated with everyone.

What is your favorite thing in your closet?

My Stella McCartney “Over the Knee” boots, which are the perfect fall accessory!

Who is your favorite designer?

Right now, Stella McCartney is probably my favorite designer, especially after seeing her Autumn 2009 line. I am also very impressed with the new vegan lines coming from Versace and Miu Miu.

What are your favorite shoes?

I love my Converse, they are always safe.

Who are your favorite bands?

Paramore, Mindless Self-indulgence, Heffron Drive, and of course the Spice Girls. 75

Who are your influences?

There are too many people in my life to name as influences or role models, that I couldn’t name just one. Everyone in my life is an incredible influence.

What got you interested in acting?

My Mom. She did extra work here and there and I eventually got the acting bug seeing her on set.

What do you do for fun?

The amount of time I have for fun is spent on taking the time to relax and play with my puppy. I also am going to have to have someone take away my credit card because my addiction to shopping is getting out of hand!

What can you tell “Runway” that the rest of the world doesn’t know?

I was born with two different color eyes, but they are the same color now.

What are your plans for the future?

To stay busy. I get bored very easily so I like to stay entertained. I am currently working on a jewelry line so I hope to get the up and going.

What is your favorite movie and why?

“The House of Yes”. First of all, I love Parker Posey. It’s a dark, yet funny movie. It is kind of indescribable, go rent it!

Where is your favorite spot on Earth?

I love Vancouver where we are filming the movies. The atmosphere in the city is so laid back and calm, and the city is absolutely beautiful. I also love being anywhere in Mexico (where my family is from) because it’s so humbling to be around family, especially when you are escaping the razzle dazzle of Hollywood. On a day-to-day basis my favorite place is my kitchen because that’s where all my amazing food is!

What time is your earliest call time?

I had a 4:00 AM call time once! It is like when your Mom tells you are going to Disneyland the next day and then you spend the whole night thinking and anticipating the following day, but you never actually get sleep.

Are you a day person or night person?

Night person. I do all my best thinking at night.

What is your advice to aspiring talent?

I don’t really need to give anyone advice because I think passion alone will guide them to where they want to go. Always listen to your instincts and trust yourself.

What charities do you work with?

PETA [She will be the new face of the “I’d Rather go Naked Than Wear Fur” Campaign] and I donate to any animal charity I can. I look forward to getting more involved with charity work in the future.

Telescope has a plan

In today’s music industry one is hard pressed to find those with a relentlessly positive and optimistic outlook. Telescope, an Arizona based alternative rock foursome, is one of those groups. Telescope is fighting, it seems, against a constant current of industry professionals saying this is one of the hardest times for new music to break. Telescope takes the following approach: They have decided they are going to make music, music that says something about who they are, and even, who we all are.

Over the past two years the band has been together they have proven they are miles from the typical garage band weekend warrior types. They have approached their band essentially how an entrepreneur would set out to build a company. They have leased an office space, turned it into a rehearsal studio/ office headquarters, they keep a desk sized calendar on the wall, and are on the phone every waking hour which is not spent writing music, or at home with family. Working on a music career requires a startling amount of sweat and tears behind the scenes.

Mike Seitz, the guitar and keyboard player from the band explains. “You have to constantly be thinking with two minds. The creative side of you needs to be making the music, and the business side of you has to work logically to make an infrastructure for marketing your product. As in any business, those two can often come into conflict.

Things are beginning to move fast for Telescope. Everyday now the band has conference calls with their new manager and attorney, talks to someone from a major record label, or spends time negotiating contracts for upcoming shows. As for the band members, brothers Seth and Jason Holland, Mike Seitz, and Seth Johnson, they feel like their efforts are paying off. It may be only a matter of time before Telescope is a household name, and we will be those who fondly say, “we knew them back when!

Shayne Lamas Interview

Tell us about “The Lamas Family!”? My family is full of entertainers who will give an open door and let our viewers into our everyday lives. Initially, I wondered (as anyone would) if it was a good idea, but in filming the pilot for E! network, I found that not only will people fall in love with the dynamic of our family, but the true love we hold for each other. You will see the good, the bad and the beautiful . Everyone’s family tells a different story and we want to share ours.

What was growing up in show business like? When I was a little girl, I grew up on the my dad’s set “Renegade.” I would want to go to work with him everyday because I LOVED being in the hair and makeup trailer getting all dolled up. Growing up on set was normal to me, it was simple “Dad’s work” to me and I absolutely fell in love with it all. I was always fascinated with learning everyone’s roles on the set and how a show was made. When I was about 10 years old I decided this is where I belong, on sets … making movies.

What is your favorite thing in your closet? My favorite thing in my closet would have to be my first pair of heels that I have kept over the years. I slept with them for weeks after my mom finally bought them for me. I was about 12 years old … Keep in mind the heel was about a half inch but still they were heels to me. What do you do for fun? I love taking my dog Madison to the beach or on hikes and enjoy the beautiful city I live in. I’ve always been a beach gal, so naturally I love going to the beach and surfing. Its the most calming, relaxing thing I could do for myself.

Who is your favorite designer? My favorite designer would have to be Chloe for clothes and YSL for shoes. You’re making me want to go shopping now!

Who are your influences? I look to my fabulous grandmother Arlene Dahl for all my advice in life . She is one of the most inspiring, influential individuals that I have come across my 23 years on this earth. She is old Hollywood at its finest. I only wish I will give my granddaughter what she has given me.

Where did you learn to act and why did you want to get into it? I started acting very young and continued to do so in high school. I went to acting class every week, because my father always said, “Know your craft. Know everything there is to know and never stop learning or taking classes.” So, I listened. After high school it was college or Hollywood, and I booked a role on “General Hospital” so my path was chosen, Hollywood.

What can you tell Runway that the rest of the world doesn’t know? No one knows, but I always have a scarf in my purse to dress up or down my outfit. I am a true scarf lover.

What films do you got coming out? I recently worked on three films— “Endless Bummer,” “Deep in the Valley,” and “In the Pines” which all come out this Fall!

What is your favorite movie and why? My favorite movie, (don’t laugh), is “Clueless” because it is a funny, feel-good movie that I watched as a girl growing up. I know every line! Where is your favorite spot on Earth? I would have to say my favorite spot on Earth is my bed. It’s my sanctuary— my sleep is very important to me, so when I have 3 a.m. call times I am not a happy girl!

Are you a day person or night person? When I am working on a project, I like to wake up early, go workout, maybe take a walk. When I am on hiatus or not working on something, I like to sleep in and become more of a night person.

What is your advice to aspiring talent? My advice to aspiring talent: If you have the passion for this industry, keep your craft close to your heart. Learn as much as you can about it and don’t be satisfied. Always keep your skills fresh and your mind working on where you want to be.You’ll find that you will get there if you do so. Have patience and trust in yourself and you will be able to do anything you set your mind on.

Jonathan Bennett: Project Runway Magazine

What do you like best about your work? What I like most about my work is making people laugh. Since I was a little kid, I was always putting on comedy sketch show in my parent’s basement, with some type of crazy costume. I would put on my Dad’s doctors coat and clown shoes and do skits with “broken funny bones.” I was such a dork! but l loved entertaining.

What is you most memorable experience in show business? I think my most memorable experience in show business was the day I arrived on set for the first time with Steve Martin. I am one of his biggest fans, and Trains Planes and Automobiles is one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time. I actually can quote it word for word. Watching Steve my whole life and admiring him as one of the great comedy geniuses of our generation made the first day of filming Cheaper by the Dozen 2 one of my most memorable moments. I walked on set for the first day and saw my chair with my name on it, sitting right next to his chair with his name on. I got chills and couldn’t stop smiling, but when you get to work with one of your idols, you can’t help but control your emotions.

What is you favorite thing in your closet? My modern amusement black trench coat.

Who is your favorite designer? I really like Rag & Bone, and I really like Theory. Day to day I wear mostly white Hanes t-shirts, right out of a 3 pack at Target, can’t beat

Tell us about you role in Paramounts VanWilder 3? Well I am stepping into some of the biggest shoes in this genre. I am taking over the role that Ryan Reynolds originated, Van Wilder. In the original Van Wilder, Van has been at Coolidge College for 7 years, and he finally graduates as one of the biggest icons in college party history. It was an honor to be chosen to take over this role. Ryan Reynolds did such an amazing job, but I am very confident in my take on the character. I don’t try to do Ryan’s version of Van, but I do keep the character as true to Ryan’s idea of him as possible. My Van is a little more innocent and a little more wide-eyed on the outlook of life. It was by far the most fun I’ve had playing any character in my career. With van there are no rules. I saw the film, and I am very happy.

Who are your Influences? Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and John Candy. I love the 80’s comedic actors by far. They are whom I steal all my material from. Michael Caine once said, “its okay to steal from other actors, every actor does. Just make sure you steal from the good ones.

Where did you learn to act? I started acting in 7th grade, and acted my way through high school. I have had two great acting teachers in my life that I think the world of. Harry Wilcox, the person to first teach me what acting was and told me that I needed to be an actor. In high school plays he would yell at me and say “Bennett! Stop mugging!” now in van wilder that is all I do! and my second great acting teacher is Chad McCord in Los Angeles. he’s the one that taught me how to be funny. He coached me on the opening scene of Van Wilder, and to be honest I never thought there was a way to make getting oral sex at a graduation funny, but Chad has this way of taking any material and giving you just one small adjustment to make the audience crack up, and he was right!

What do you do for fun? I hike mostly. I’m a big hiker. I take my dog up the canyons in Hollywood on a daily basis. Some people think of it as working out, but I think of it as having fun.

What can i tell runway that the rest of the world doesnt know? That I secretly read National Geographic magazine to fall asleep. I know! I’m kind of a dork!

What are your plans for the future.? I’d like to continue to act and make people laugh for the rest of my life. also using the power we have as actors and using our celebrity for the greater good of humanity. There are so many opportunities we have as actors to give back to others less fortunate. If you are a successful actor it is not only your privilege to give back, but your duty. there are too many people in need to ignore it. And I don’t care what charity you belong to, as long as you belong. save the whales, the dogs, the kids, the elderly, the icebergs, hell I don’t care, just help something! Personally my charity is ONE HEARTLAND, and camp dedicated to improving the lives of kids with HIV/AIDS.

What is your Favortie movie? Christmas Vacation is by far my favorite movie, not only because it makes me laugh every time, but because when I watch it every year I’m usually at home with my family and it’s tradition. So it makes me feel good all around.

Where is your favorite spot on earth? Camp Heartland. A camp that I work with helping kids with HIV/AIDS up in Minnesota. With all the craziness of Hollywood, going to camp heartland grounds you as a human. you step away from all the Hollywood bullshit and you realize what really matters in life. it’s all about love.

What isYour earliest call time? 5am, everyday on the set of van wilder. I don’t know how the make up ladies kept me looking good for 2 months of that!

Are you a day or night person? Day!

What your advice to aspiring talent? Don’t become an actor unless you wake up every morning and can think of nothing but acting. only then will you be successful.

NYC Fashion Week Fall 2009

Runway Magazine Runway show picks fall 2009.

Jason Wu

This time last year the name Jason Wu would have likely been followed with the question, “Jason who?” But this designer is seemingly back for the first time, as Wu created his first full collection in 2006, but is now a fashion darling since designing the inaugural gown for First Lady Michelle Obama. Embroidered sleeves and jet beading at the hems demonstrate his extreme attention to detail. No piece mimics another, yet Wu makes the collection cohesive with electric blue and sunny yellow appearing more than once. Celebrities Spotted: Anna Wintour, Chanel Iman, Jay Alexander, Olivia Palermo

Tracy Reese

Known for her glamorous everyday look for the sensible woman, Tracy Reese adds touches of sass and class to practicality. Women who are ready to show those sexy legs make no apologies wearing this designer’s collection as many of the flirty dresses are above knee length. This label flaunts knee-high socks and the knit cap, finishing the perfect fall look that’s suitable for any day. Colors such as saffron, mauve and rose are copious finds on these fabrics. Celebrities Spotted: Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and boyfriend Reggie Bush, Veronica Webb, Alexie Gilmore Diane Von Furstenburg DVF proves that luxurious comfort has become reality. Wrap dresses and tunic-miniskirt combos were coupled with either slouchy cardigans or cocoon coats. Leopard and tapestry prints make special appearances in this collection for a little versatility. Celebrities Spotted: Diana Ross, Diane Sawyer, Rachel Zoe, Tim Gunn

Donna Karan

Donna Karan isn’t afraid to bring the midnight feel to this collection with its dark hues and deepened tones. Black, grey and rich browns take over the color scheme. Soft, feminine silhouettes coif delicate figures with belts at the waist. A caramel calfskin trench jacket and a white poplin button-down shirt stand out among the rest of the pieces. Celebrities Spotted: Rachel Zoe, Molly Sims, Milla Jovovich

Michael Kors Neon colors found here help to create neon classics for Michael Kors. Lime green, hot pink and caution orange splash onto the runway with this collection. Black remains an abundant tint here. Seek and you will find an assortment of jackets, including short-sleeve, squared-off and cutout shoulders. A one-shoulder matte sequin dress makes its way onto the MK scene. Celebrities Spotted: Heidi Klum, Joy Bryant, Jane Krakowski Nicole Miller A woman who wants her style to match her sophisticated beauty will readily wear the fall collection. Nicole Miller uses simple geometric lines and shapes to create dynamic patterns in many of the pieces. So often found in many of her designs, the colors in this palate are subdued, dark and chic. Celebrities Spotted: Katrina Bowden, Candace Bushnell, Kristy Yamaguchi, Solange Knowles

Carolina Herrera

The theme of Herrera’s collection seems to take eveningwear to a higher level. Gowns materialize in deep forest green, metallic bronze and silver, and a variety of rouges. Corset and off-the-shoulder evening dresses did not drown out the voices of other fashion statements on the catwalk. The noontime refinement of a narrow pantsuit and a long sleeved day dress break up the ornate feel. Celebrities Spotted: Rachel Zoe, Jessica Stroup, Nina Garcia, Christian Sirano, Farah Angsana

The Fashion Genius, Marc Jacobs

Jacobs has worked his way up to the forefront of fashion as he is the head designer for Marc Jacobs, the diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs, as well as the Creative Director of the prestigious French design house Louis Vuitton. It’s quite hard to compete with this fashion mastermind, as he works incredibly hard to succeed in living up to his hype, even exceeding it, if at all possible. Although Jacobs is known around the world for his remarkable success in fashion, he is indeed recognized as New York’s very own homegrown fashion genius.

Born April 9, 1963 in New York City, Marc Jacobs showed an early interest in fashion, working as a stock boy at Charivari, a NYC clothing boutique, while attending the High School of art and design. There is no doubt that Jacobs was born an artist in fashion, with such determination at such a young age he proved early on that this was going to be his life. After graduating in 1981, Jacobs entered the Parson School of Design in New York City. While attending Parsons, Jacobs won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award in 1984 and in the same year was also awarded the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award. He was not one to be held back in any way, Jacobs had already managed to design and sell his first collection of hand knit sweaters before he had graduated from Parsons.

Following his studies at Parsons, Jacobs landed a design job with Perry Ellis and he became wellknown, on the fashion scene, when he designed a “grunge” collection for Perry Ellis, leading to his dismissal. Not discouraged, Jacobs pressed on and teamed with Robert Duffy to start designing his own creations. Even though Jacobs had no longer worked for Perry Ellis, in 1987 he would soon find himself awarded the fashion industry’s highest tribute, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. Jacobs was the youngest of all designers to have ever received the CFDA award.

In 1989 Jacobs and Duffy joined together the women’s design unit of Tristan Russo, as Vice President and President, respectively. In addition Jacobs over-saw the design of the various women’s licensees. In the year of 1992, the Council of Fashion Designers of America had once again bestowed Jacobs with another achievement:TheWomen’s Designer of the Year Award.

By 1994, Jacobs had designed his own full line of menswear. It wasn’t long before French Fashion house Louis Vuitton took notice, hiring Jacobs as their Creative Director, a title he has detained since the year of 1997 and it was then that he began creating the company’s first ready-to-wear-line. Jacobs is as notorious for his advertising and social life as he is for his clothes. He is a major fixture in the New York City celebrity scene, having become something of an icon himself. Using such legendary stars in his campaigns as child actress Dakota Fanning, director Sofia Coppola, R.E.M., front man Michael Stripe and actress Chloe Sevigny. These selections have led him to free advertising for his lines, catching the attention of people around the world. This success then led him to his establishment of boutiques bearing his name, outwardly making Marc Jacobs’ image relentless.

Jacobs’ name brings in a variety of spectators to his fashion shows, whom all admire his remarkable originality. Some of his audience are more well known than others and may typically include celebrities such as, Kim Gordan and Vincent Gallo. Many of his collections make references to the style of earlier decades from the forties to the eighties. Speaking out against the claim made by the designer Oscar de la Renta, that Jacobs is a mere copyist, the New York Times Critic Guy Trebay has written “unlike the many brand-name designers who promote the illusion that their output results from a single prodigious creativity, Mr. Jacobs makes no pretense that fashion emerges full blown from the head of one solitary genius.” Explaining his clothes, Jacobs has said “what I prefer is that even if someone feels hedonistic, they don’t look it. Curiosity about sex is much more interesting to me than domination.…My clothes are not hot. Never, Never.”

In recent years, the Jacobs brand has quadrupled with the company’s collection Marc Jacobs and his less expensive secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, to global business, with 160 shops, in 19 countries. The assorted ready-to-wear and accessory collections are also broadly available at primary department stores around the globe.

As Marc Jacobs has proven to be a world wide success in fashion, he has also showed determination in his personal well being. If you were to take a closer look into his personal life, you will find he is at the top of his career and his body. At the age of 45 he has shown to be a strong and powerful openly gay man. He has conquered the evil addiction of drugs and alcohol in rehab and has taken on a new and healthy addiction, the gym. He now works out at the gym for up to three hours per day, keeping his body at a youthful and muscular condition. The once long haired man with glasses is now strapping and suntanned, looking some what like a superhero. Jacobs has been through some rough patches with his personal life, although some believe it has brought him so much further in terms of his ability to create.

Young designers learn quickly that it takes an incredible amount of work to find success and Marc Jacobs is a clear example. There is no doubt he has earned his fame in the fashion industry, making his name as New York’s homegrown fashion genius. Jacobs is in a desirable position, but it took many years for him to become a world class designer.

To check out the latest in Jacobs’ melting pot mentality, you can visit his site online and watch videos from his latest fashion shows. You can also find the Marc Jacobs collection, including high end accessories, apparel, handbags and shoes at Nordstrom. For more affordable retro edgy fashions and accessories, shop his Marc by Marc Jacobs collection. Many other stores carry the Marc Jacobs line including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Barneys.

Want to rekindle your Romance? Revamp your wardrobe

By Lea Haben

Dating/Relationship Expert

It’s common knowledge that people tend to let themselves go after being in a relationship for a while. We tend to get laxed, put on a little weight and sometimes forget to shut the bathroom door. Women who once coveted the latest Jimmy Choo’s are now venturing out in public while wearing sweat pants, pajamas and even baggy t-shirts and flip-flops. Is it no wonder that the romance in your life is slipping away? Men are visual creatures ladies and there is always a woman at his office whose wearing full make-up, high heels and a short skirt. I admit that sometimes being superwoman with a job, bills, and carpooling responsibilities can leave you feeling a little less than sexy… (However there are a few simple things you can do to combat the frumps!)

Here are few tips:

1. Start with Sexy Underwear… You can’t help but feel pretty in a beautiful bra and panty set.

2. Wear colorful clothes that highlight your assets and minimize your flaws

3. Choose a sexy low maintenance hairstyle that flatters your face

4. If you can’t do full make-up apply a little blush, mascara and lip gloss

5. If you have great legs —show them off!

6. Treat yourself to a manicure and a pedicure occasionally and then buy some sexy strappy sandals… (Men love pretty feet)

7. Smile! A little come hither grin and an outfit that helps you feel sexy will rekindle the old flame!

Final thought, throw out all but one of your comfort frump wardrobe… (Not to be worn but to serve as a reminder of what not to wear!)

Cassidy Freeman Interview

1. What do you like best about your work? I am so very thankful to be someone who gets to define ‘work’ synonymously with ‘what I love’. What I like best is digging in deep. I have a love and appreciation for human emotion and relationships. How they work. How they don’t. Why we do what we do and how, through storytelling, we can open someone’s eyes to create compassion or understanding. There is something so satisfying about getting to explore different parts of yourself to make a new character come alive. When I get a script and work on it, I’m allowed to find and explore all the reasons why a character may do something one way or another, it’s a bit like I get to live many lives.

2. What is your most memorable experience in show business? The funny thing is that the experience that comes to mind was very early on, and shared with only myself. There was this moment when I first moved to LA after graduating from Middlebury where I was standing in my room looking out the window at dusk (how poetic this is sounding), and I had just signed with my first agent. It had little to do with the particular agent or any particular job, but I had this moment with myself where I realized I was really doing this. I had, inside myself, made a promise to follow this dream, all else be damned. The next one after that would be my first opening night of an off Broadway production. There’s no rush like that.

3. What is your favorite thing in your closet? Clothes come and go, but in the corner of my closet is a box that holds a red haired wig that I bought on the street in New York City. I wore this wig in a production of “David’s Redahaired Death” by Sherry Kramer. I performed this production as my senior thesis work in college. It’s an amazing two woman play about the relationship between two friends who share love, loss and fear. Although both characters have red hair in the show, we (my scene partner and I) both decided to wear wigs and although now my hair is dyed red for “Smallville” (how fitting), I keep this wig to remind me of something that I created with people I adore.

4. Who is your favorite designer? I tend to pick and choose clothes that I love from all over, but Morgan Le Fay is a designer that I love. Her dresses always seem to fit like they were made for you and the style is one that I always feel beautiful wearing. They can be the most simple and elegant, or fun and funky. There’s an unassuming elegance to her pieces. They are just perfect.

5. Who are your influences? My family continues to play an enormous role in my life. My parents are the greatest supporters and teachers I’ve known, and my two older brothers, who are also actors, have inspired me since I was born. Although there are many actors, artists and close friends I admire, I try to be influenced by all types of stimulus. I believe there’s something to be learned from everyone. There’s a quote out there in quote-land that says something to the effect of, “The smartest man is the one who knows he’ll never know everything.” However, actors that have inspired me include Laura Linney, Emma Thompson and Juliette Binoche. There’s something so wonderfully effortless seeming to their talent. And I recently listened to an NPR interview with Terrence Howard. He blew me away.

6. Where did you learn to act? The easy answer would be: life. We never stop learning how to act, which is why if we stick with it, we (hopefully) become like a fine wine with age. Life experience is the best thing you can do for an acting career. I also have been watching my brothers on stage since I can remember. Academically, however, I studied acting at various places: Middlebury College, The Actors Center, and most recently at PlayhouseWest. PlayhouseWest was the secret ingredient, in my mind. This school took all the training I have had throughout my years, and made it real, honest and relevant. I can’t tell you what a gift it is to find not only teachers but a group of people with whom you feel comfortable enough to truly explore your craft. I hope I find many people like this along the way.

7. What do you do for fun? I love all that surrounds music: listening, playing, dancing… My brother, Clark and I play in a band with our friend Andy Mitton. We’re called The Real D’Coy. Due to busy schedules we haven’t been playing as much as we’d like, but music is a healing element. I am convinced of that. I love to travel. Preferably with a friend that maybe I don’t get to see on a regular basis. And that lends itself to speaking new languages, finding new cultures and experiencing other ways of life. I also spend a lot of time with my dog, Shasta. Filming “Smallville” in Vancouver has allowed us to explore the nature of the northwest, which is spectacular. I love to cook, especially soups. I know, it sounds odd, but soup is the best meal out there. And when I’m home, we break out the table games, Rummekub being the game of choice. My mother always takes the longest turns, but she also often wins, go figure.
