Macy's Passport Fashion Show

A while back, I was able to go cover the annual Macy’s Passport Fashion show in Santa Monica and it was a great event. When we first arrived it was a pretty hot day in Santa Monica and we had some credential problems but luckily I had my phone and was able to get the confirmation. My photographer and I were let in and we quickly found our space on the red carpet.

Since we where still early to the event, we took a quick trip into the VIP lounge where plenty of vendors had set up shop with everything from small little snacks to candy to munch on before the carpet started.

We where able to have a quick chat with ABC Family show “Make It Or Break It” stars Chelsea Hobbs as newcomer Emily Kmetko, Josie Loren as gymnast Kaylie Cruz, and Cassie Scerbo as gymnast Lauren Tanner who all discussed the show and how much fun it is on set. All the girls pretty much said they liked each other and had some great relationships on and off camera.

Then, I talked to La Toya Jackson for a few seconds before she was taken away by her publicist to actually attend the show. We spotted 90210 star AnnaLynne McCord but she was taken away before we had the chance to speak with her about the second season of the show and her support for the AIDS charity that this event supported.

Later, I spotted a long time friend, Nicole Hiltz, who I met after she was on FX’s the Shield and she now stars in USA Networks In Plain Sight. It has been a few years since we saw each other and it was fun to see her again. The thing that I believe surprised her the most was that she did not know that I was a reporter until that day.

After the red carpet, we were shown into the Barker Hangar and I found out that I had been given a prime spot at the end of the runway. This is a prime spot because you get to see the clothes so much closer then some of the other people in attendance.

Sharon Stone was the MC for the evening and had a lot of the stars in attendance to come on stage and declare their donations. These donations started at approximately 5000 dollars and then the club became smaller and smaller. A lot of celebrities including Ms. Jackson and Ms. McCord went on stage and Ms. Shannon thanked them for coming out and donating for such a good cause.

Longtime AIDS research supporter, Elizabeth Taylor, took to the catwalk at the show and received a standing ovation from the people in attendance even though she was sick she still made it out in support of the cause.

“As my beloved friend Michael [Jackson] said, ‘We are the world.’ And it is up to us to take care of those who are sick and dying, in this country and particularly in Africa.” she said to the crowd.

Then Levis had a dancing performance that was just wonderful. The main performance which took everyone breath away was the performance of the Kids with the Harajuku Girls.

Adventures of Power Movie Review

The 411:When hard times hit a small mining town, Power (writer-director Ari Gold) doesn’t wish for riches. He only wishes that he’d learned to play drums. Unfortunately for Power, his father (Michael McKean) could never afford to buy him a drum set, so Power has embraced the next best thing: air drumming.

The Good: This is a comedy from start to finish with a little bit of romance added to it for good measure. The romance occurs where Power gets a girl that would normally be out of his league, one that actually enjoys his love and passion for air drumming. This is a Napoleon Dynamite movie from start to finish where the outcast and geek becomes the hero. You’ll sit in your chair and actually grow feelings for the main character and wish him luck in his journey to become an air drumming legend. I also liked the small part that Adrian Grenier (Entourage) plays as Dallas H, a multimillionaire who plays drums for real but has a love that he hides from his dad for air drumming.

The Bad: As with most movies, its predictable, kind of ridiculous and over the top but that’s what makes the movie so good.

The Last Word: As with a previous movie that I have reviewed recently, its a great date movie that your date actually will enjoy as much as you do. You’ll walk out drumming to your imaginary song in your head. Its perfect timing as everyone things they are a rock star with guitar hero and DJ Hero video games selling like hot cakes.

Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: It will be a success in any category but watching it in a theater with surround sound is so worth it!

The House of the Devil Movie Review

The 411:Samantha (Jocelin Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there’s no baby.

The Good: I personally don’t like horror movies. This movie surprised me from start to finish as, first, it’s not just all about the “blood and guts” as alot of horror movies are today. The characters are just amazing and so are the special effects. Just how real it is from a broke college students perspective makes it believable.

The Bad: there’s alot of down time between the action. When it starts it goes “full on” from start to finish is when you’re sitting on the edge of your seat. The down time is the only bad aspect of this movie.

The Last Word: This is a horror movie that I actually enjoyed and would see again. The movie does have an open ending as with a lot of horror movies but you will need to see it to find out. Jocelin Donahue, a former model turned actress, does a fine job and will go far in this business if she watches what roles she chooses to ensure she’s not labeled another “scream queen”.

Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: Theater or bust! You MUST see this on Halloween.

Law Abiding Citizen Movie Review

The 411:When a home invasion robbery turns deadly, the lone survivor will stop at nothing to avenge his lost loved ones in Law Abiding Citizen, an explosive examination of blind justice from the director of The Italian Job.

The Good: This will be the movie of the year. Up to this point, it’s the best movie that I have seen all year in its own category of an action/thriller with a little bit of comedy added in for good measure. This movie will keep you in your seat at all times. The great thing about Law Abiding Citizen is that it’s not predictable at all and when you think you know what’s going to happen, you find out that in reality you have no idea! Then, you are taken back to square one until the end of the movie when the puzzle is solved.

The Bad: This is one of the few movies that I can actually say that I have no complaints about. It was made the right way from start to finish. If you walk out of this movie not satisfied that you got what you signed up for, we’d be really surprised!

The Last Word: Jamie Foxx is in a take no prisoners position. His job matters most and wants to become the DA and he doesn’t care what deal he needs to do to make that ensure it happens. Gerard Butler is a take no prisoner do it yourself Dad and husband that wants revenge. He’ll do what he has to do to make sure that happens.

Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: Theater or bust!

The Surrogate Movie Review

The 411: People are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates — sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It’s an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don’t exist. When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Greer (Bruce Willis) discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery.

The Good: The Surrogate has alot of action and a pretty good story that makes you think how close we are from this movie actually becoming reality. It’s not just an action movie with things being blown up and people being shot but a story that goes a little bit into the future and shows you how, similarily to the Stepford Wives, people can be cloned to becoming perfect. The interesting thing about this movie is it gives you an example of how much we actually rely on technology from I-phones to GPS systems. In this world, they need their surrogate and can’t live without using it.

The Bad: The movie is your typical Sci-fi movie like The Minority Report,The Matrix.,A.I. and especially I-Robot where the robots controlled most of the word we lived in.

The Last Word: If you like Sci-Fi, you’ll love this movie. Either way, you won’t be bored with it because it makes you think.

Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: If you do miss it in theaters, you should rent it for some good water cooler talk at the office.

Inglorious Bastards Movie Review

The 411: Inglorious Bastards is a story which takes place in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Agroup of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Bastards” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Bastards soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris that is targeted by the soldiers.

The Good: I was very surprised when I heard the news that Brad Pitt would be playing the main character but he hit the character out of the ball park. The movie is funny, violent, romantic and has a lot of action that blended into one great movie going experience for everyone. Some of the different things that Tarantino does in the movie is making it a chapter movie and that was different. The main hero or character you begin having a love/hate relationship with is Standartenführer Hans Landa aka “The Jew Hunter” who is portaryed by Christoph Waltz. His performance is just impeccable.

The Bad: The movie is your typical Tarantino movie in regards to the very violent scenes in the movie, which is nothing new for Tarantino. I also had a small problem with the movie being very long which also may be a problem for some people that go to the movies. Especially if they have to take a bathroom break! It’s bad not a good situation for those who can’t sit that long because Tarantino really didn’t have any scenes in the movie that you can miss. A break in this 3 hour movie is pretty much impossible. Seeing Eli Roth as Staff Sergeant Donny Donowitz aka “The Bear Jew” was a surprise. I personally believe someone called the “Jew Bear” should be a little bigger then Mr. Roth but regardless, it’s a good character.

The Last Word: All I can say is that Tarantino hit a home run with this movie and I could not get enough of it. The best movie of the year so far in my opinion!
Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: This is the movie you should not miss.

Movie Review: Vin Diesel’s Los Bandoleros

The 411: The film tells the intriguing back story about the characters and events leading up to the explosive oil truck heist in Fast & Furious. Featuring Fast & Furious cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tego Calderon, Don Omar and Sung Kang.

The Good: Well as you already know, this short movie tells the tale that you did not know watching the 4th installment of Fast & Furious and that is what happened before they explosive oil truck heist in the full on motion picture. It was great to see some of the old characters again and Vin Diesel directed this short and did a hell of a job. when I attended the screening at Universal studio’s I actually really enjoyed myself..

The Bad: First, I was confused because when they spoke Spanish for liked 5 min and I thought the entire movie was shot that way. It was possible just a little to short and I wish that they had added maybe 10 more minutes to flesh out a few more details on the story and the characters. I guess that is why you need to watch the full feature to get it.

The Last Words: It shows Vin Diesel as a family man and a lover when Michelle Rodriguez shows up in the last five minutes of the short. I highly recommend that you buy the DVD of the new Fast & Furious and watch the short before you watch the feature.

Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: DVD you don’t have a choice.

Movie Review: A Day In The Life

The 411: A DAY IN THE LIFE is an action-packed urban thriller with a decidedly unconventional operatic conceit. Told entirely through rap, the story begins with a young man by the name of Stick (Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones) deciding he wants out of the street life. When two members of opposing crime families are gunned down, Stick finds himself caught in the middle of an explosive blood bath. Soon, hes faced with a decision of loyalty or a new beginning.

The Good: The points I appreciated with this movie was that it goes where no other movie of its kind has gone! It made an action-packed urban thriller where the dialogue is performed entirely in rap. Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones tried to do something new and special and I believe he made a pretty good movie. “A Day In The Life” takes you into the life of gang member and what happens when things just go bad.You will love this movie if you like movies with lots of gun shooting because that is what this movie is all about. Seeing who could fire off enough bullets in the least amount of time.

The Bad: This movie is made for an audience that appreciates “urban gangster movies” and especially rap music. This is not “High School Musical” and they don’t try to be that either. My question is “how much of an audience does the movie have?’ I’m sure they lost alot because it is done completely in rap.

The Last Word: The movie is your typical “gangster movie” which we’ve have seen before and we will again! The only thing that makes Mr. Jones’ directorial debut any different is the dialoge is completely in rap. If you like these kind of movies, then you’ll really enjoy this independent movie set in Los Angeles.

Theater, DVD, or Cable in a few years: If you’re a fan of this kind of genre, it will be a great movie to watch. If you’re not a fan of a “gangster musical”, then you may want to wait until it hits cable in a few months.
