Carmen Corral makes her presence known on TNT's Southland.

“Southland” is a critically acclaimed show that has been on the air for five years. What has it been like joining such an established show? Tell us more about your character.

I feel so blessed! It’s always amazing to book an acting job but it’s even more amazing when it’s for a show that you love and believe in. The show is so raw and true to life, nothing is sugar coated…from the aesthetic to the characters. That brings me to my character, Elena. She comes from a troubled home but she has chosen a better path for herself–she is going to school to be a painter. She crosses paths with Ben Mckenzie’s character in an unlikely way–when he’s arresting her brother. She and Ben come from different worlds but their growing love sees no boundaries. It’s very Romeo and Juliet. I connect very much to Elena’s story. I can really say I have lived it. I come from a low-income neighborhood in Chicago. A lot of people around me growing up, chose paths that put them in jail or in the grave, but I knew there was so much more out there than life.

We hear that you are working on a screenplay, can you tell us more about it?

Yes, absolutely. My film, La Clave, is a salsa dance film set in urban Los Angeles. The title is Spanish for “the key” as in the key to life and it’s also the heartbeat of a salsa song. The message of the film is that the key to life is to follow your heart despite your fears. My main character is an undocumented dancer who wants to achieve his dreams despite his legal status. In his regular life, he is invisible, but on the dance floor he can be the king. The dance floor has no borders. The script was a semi-finalist at the Sundance Film Festival Screenwriter’s Lab last year. I will be submitting it again this year as well as adapting it to television.

When you are not on set, or writing, what are some of your favorite activities?

I am actually also a pro salsa dancer. I feel so lucky that I have these three outlets to express myself. And they are really so different. In acting it’s all about being vulnerable, in writing it’s about letting your imagination run free and in dance it’s about funneling your emotions into dance, escaping in the music. When I’m not acting, writing or dancing, I love to be in nature, to travel, and spend fun times with family and friends.

Let’s talk about some girly stuff. What are your favorite beauty products? What is your favorite outfit for a night out? A casual day?

I am a super health nut so all my beauty products are natural with no harsh chemicals. I use skin care by Ann Webb. I also use Alba products. I love Physician’s Formula liquid foundation–it smells like lavender. And I can’t go without my Buxom Mascara, it’s really the best. My favorite outfit for a night out is a high-waisted fitted pencil skirt with a pretty fitted top. I love the film noir look–red lipstick, thick eyeliner. For a casual day it’s a crop-top wife-beater (is there a PC term for this kind of shirt?) and some low waisted jeans.

Tell everyone why the need to be watching “Southland.”

Tell everyone why they need to be watching “Southland.” I think everyone should watch Southland because it makes you feel deeply and wakes you up. It’s real. But at the same time, it’s just gosh darn entertaining!

Singer Caroline Brooks Talks New Single Fashion!

Congratulations on the new video & single! How exciting! We love the whole Bonnie & Clyde theme of the video. Why did you release Tomorrow, Tonight as your first single?

Thank you! I’m very excited. Out of all my new songs, I think this one will connect to the most people. It’s such a fun song to play live and I hope the same energy translates digitally. When I performed it onstage for the first time, my Facebook and Twitter inboxes started blowing up with fans saying that the chorus was still stuck in their head and they wanted to find out where they could buy it. I love it when your song hits a nerve in a good way.

Your sound has been compared to artists such as One Republic and Sara Bareilles, how would you describe your style? Anyone you’d compare your fashion sense to?

I’m a big fan of the vintage / classic pin-up look. I guess I would compare my style to Zooey Deschanel or a more subtle version of Katy Perry. I try to keep it timeless and feminine with a little edge.

As a musician, you are always traveling and on the road, what do you consider your beauty and fashion must-haves?

My beauty must-haves would have to be Laura Mercier’s liquid foundation, Tarte’s “Lights, Camera, Lashes!” mascara, and a good pink lip gloss (I usually prefer Lancôme). For fashion must-haves, I’d have to say a good pair of skinny jeans, vintage lace-up ankle boots, and a fitted dress that gives you an hour-glass figure. I’m all about versatility when it comes to fashion.

If you could only have one product on your tour bus, what would it be?

If I could only have one beauty product, it would have to be Tarte’s “Lights, Camera, Lashes!” mascara. That stuff is like Miracle-Grow for your eyelashes and makes all the difference.

Who are some of your favorite designers and why?

Fashion designers I like or fashion designers I can afford? I’m a big thrift shop & vintage junkie, but I’ve always loved the styles of Ralph Lauren, Dolce and Gabbana, and Chanel. I’m especially a big fan of Ralph Lauren dresses. Their fit is feminine and sexy in a classy and almost subtle way. Overall, the color palette and style of these designers are chic and not too flamboyant for me.

You seem to have a very busy schedule, with SXSW, some tour dates, and a release party and show within the last month. What is next for you?

After my single and music video release, I’ll be finishing up my EP to be released this summer. The single is a taste of what my new EP will sound like. My song “Parachute” that was featured in the trailer for Kate Hudson’s film “A Little Bit of Heaven” will be included. My next music video will probably be for that song.

I’m excited to be releasing more videos with the same cinematic style as the one for “Tomorrow, Tonight.” I’m a big advocate of using a strong, visual narrative to make the song more powerful. In the meantime, I’ll also be playing shows all over the west coast to promote it. More dates for those shows will be announced soon. Can’t wait!

Introducing Denise Bidot

International Plus Size Model Denise Bidot is widely recognized for her remarkable beauty and charm. Denise has worked with many of the fashion industries top clients including Vogue Italy, Macys, Nordstrom, Old Navy, Lane Bryant, Forever 21, and is now starring on nuvoTV’s hit show “Curvy Girls,” which provides an all-access pass inside the glamorous world of professional modeling. “Curvy Girls” which is currently shooting its second season, shines the spotlight on four full-figured beauties, who won’t let anything get in the way of their success. In addition, this half Puerto Rican, half Kuwaiti beauty can be seen on HBO Latino’s highly acclaimed show “Habla” which features different Hispanic voices in the U.S and will debut April 18th.

We were fortunate enough to sit down with this star on the rise to discuss “Curvy Girls,” fashion, and the importance of empowering women.

We love your show “Curvy Girls”!! Without giving too much away, what can fans look forward to next season?

Thank you so much for the support of Curvy Girls! It’s been so much fun to be part of the show and receiving such a fantastic response from fans has truly been a humbling experience.

This season is going to be full of exciting things for me and the girls. I, for one, will be branching out and trying something career wise, that I never thought was possible. Also, there will be a huge development in my personal life and viewers will get to share in my journey. I can’t wait to talk about everything, but I can’t say too much. Since we are shooting there will still be a lot more to come.

“Curvy Girls” highlights a different side of the modeling world and encourages women to embrace their bodies no matter what shape or size. How important do you think it is for women to be happy and comfortable with their body type?

I think Curvy Girls is such a wonderful show and I’m so proud to be a part of it. Showing women that beauty comes in different shapes, sizes, ethnicities and ages is a huge deal! Being comfortable in your own skin is the key to happiness and the average American woman is a size 14. But it isn’t until now that we are getting representation in the media and I think it’s a wonderful thing to have leading ladies that depict powerful women being happy in their skin.

Let’s talk fashion! How would you describe your personal style?

I like to think my style is a little bit rock and roll with a touch of sophistication. I love mixing trendy pieces with basics and I am a sucker for amazing jeans with super high heels. Most of all, I like to feel comfortable and have a great time.

With spring right around the corner, what are some of your ‘must-have’ items for the upcoming season?

High waisted flare denim pants are a must have for spring, especially for the curvy woman. There is something about the 70’s fashion that I’m very into these days. A great fitting pair of high waisted jeans with a crop shirt or tucked in button down is perfection.

I am also obsessed with circle frames and recently purchased the most amazing pair of Prada sunglasses that I will be rocking from now until forever lol. I strongly suggest trying on different ones and finding the pair that suits your face shape the best, since it can be tricky to find the perfect fit.

Having already worked with Vogue.it, Marcy’s, Nordstrom, Forever21, Old Navy, to name a few, are there any other designers or brands you are dying to collaborate with?

I would love to work for Saks Fifth Avenue, Burberry, Latina Magazine and many more, but more than anything my dream is to book a hair and/or makeup campaign. Curvy girls can sell beauty products too 🙂 Starring in a feature film would be a dream come true for me too, so I’m working hard towards making that happen.

Meital Dohan

RUNWAY: First of all, huge congrats on “Yummy” and now of course “On Ya” featuring Sean Kingston tearing it up on the UK and Billboard Club Charts! I know I and all my girlfriends love to shake our groove thangs to it! When did you start getting your feet wet in the world of music?

MEITAL: It’s actually a pretty incredible story. I met with this healer in Israel who told me I was going to make music. At the time I was filming a TV show there and this came as a bit of a surprise, but I decided to go with it. What was even weirder is that when I got back to LA, I serendipitously met CHE POPE who became my producer and collaborator. We started making music almost immediately, and it all just fell into place and happened so fast. I think when everything comes together so perfectly and feels authentic, you have to internalize it and really pursue it. Music just made sense to me, even though it maybe wasn’t on my original radar of things I was going to do. It was the next step I was going to take as an artist and I’m really grateful and happy that I did.

RUNWAY: Meital you are sort of like a modern day Renaissance “wo”man mastering everything from film, TV, comedy, music, activism, fashion and all things art – How do you balance it all and maintain a unique impression in all of these outlets? So many say that you can’t do it all, you should only pick one or two things and do those really, really well – what would you say to those folks?

MEITAL: I would tell these folks to open their eyes and look at the greatest artist of our time. Madonna is so many things – she is a mother, she is an entrepreneur, she is a singer, dancer, actor, fighter, political activist. I think as an artist everything you do informs how you express yourself, and in which medium can you best get across that message. I write poetry and I think that poetic sensibility in me helps me connect to roles as an actress, and also my lyrical sensibility as a song-writer. There are so many connections in the things I’m doing, and I truly believe you don’t have to pick. I can do it all and I know that I can, because its not a choice, but rather, a compulsion and a necessity to do it.

RUNWAY: It used to be that a film actor would never do a television show or neither would touch live theater, but today there is soooo much crossover. Why do you think it is different and acceptable, if not even a really wise career move to do that now?

MEITAL: I don’t believe in silly rules like this. I think now a days, actors realize that there are so many channels to expose themselves and their talents, including the web. Nowadays people are watching movies on their TV screens or their IPADs, sitting at home. Its not about the whether you are choosing to do a film or a tv show, but rather the story you’re trying to tell and the role you choose to tell that story. Regarding theater, I’ve always felt very much at home on the stage since thats really where my career began in Israel. Live theater is so exciting because there’s no editing, no retakes, no do-overs. You have one chance to get it right and to move people. I like that intensity.

RUNWAY: With all that you do professionally, I’m dying to ask you 2 questions – a.) How do you find Meital time and what do you do with it on those rare occasions. I saw that you enjoy meditating – is this still something you practice? And b.) What is your core passion; if you could pick just one thing to do for the rest of your life, what would it be?

a) I try to mediate every day and I also do a lot of exercise. Quieting the mind and releasing endorphins through sweat and exercise is a great way to just feel connected, mind and body.

b) I think I would just spend my entire life inside a music video. It’s so fun flying out of airplanes and doing stunts in 8 inch high heels.

RUWANY: When fans hit your website they are enlightened with a personal note from you talking about your spiritual journey and asking people to “read between the lines.” How do you use your work to express your spiritual beliefs and what is it that you hope others take away from it?

MEITAL: I think sometimes people on first listen hear my music and its really fun, and it makes you dance, and it makes you happy, and it makes you just feel good inside. That’s definitely what I want, but I also want people to listen to what I’m saying and my message because I’m using music and my power as a performer to spread important social messages and talk about gender, sex and female empowerment. For me spirituality is personal and not something that can be so easily defined, but I want to take people on a spiritual journey with my music by allowing them to connect with the songs on an individual and unique way, to open their heart let down their guard bring back the values of love, soul, and humanity.

RUNWAY: Your recurring role on hit Showtime’s hit television series “Weeds” initially made you a household name. What is one of your favorite experiences about that role or being on the set of “Weeds.”

MEITAL: Well I can’t lie, it was really fun to be playing a dominatrix woman who gets to wear a Dildo and call the shots. It was humorous in some ways, but also strangely empowering!

RUNWAY: So let’s forget what’s popular – what has been one of your most memorable roles that impacted you either in film, TV or on stage (Yes that’s right boys & girls, she’s an accomplished theater actor as well)?

MEITAL: It’s hard to say but I think one of my most challenging – and rewarding roles was Efrat in Giraffes, which won me a Nomination for an Israeli Oscar. In the film I got to play a character totally different from myself or any role I’ve ever played before and thats the most fun, when you get to really stretch your own imagination of what a person can be and feel.

RUNWAY: Can you share a little bit about growing up in Israel and how you ended up where you are today? When doing some research I didn’t find a lot of mainstream actors or musicians from Israel. What did you do that set you apart?

MEITAL: I think the best way to set yourself apart is to not try to set yourself apart. I’ve always been very independent and done my own thing. I’m very proud of where I come from and
my roots, but I consider myself to have three homes: Tel Aviv, LA, and NY. I think I was able to connect with a larger world audience by taking risks and letting my voice be heard.
Usually when people say things like, “are you sure?” or “maybe thats a little tooo…” my response is “GREAT! Lets do it!” I don’t have fear when it comes to my work, for better and for worse, because I’m confident in what I’m doing.

RUNWAY: When watching your videos and looking at photos, my visual senses are immediately intrigued with your elaborate costuming. How much input do you have on your look on and off the camera?

MEITAL: I’m 100% involved in my styling. I’ve worked with many stylists and its fun to have someone else dress you but what I’ve ultimately learned, is that I know what looks good on me, and I know what image I want to project of myself through costuming and clothing. I’ve always been attracted to conceptual fashion pieces. I think my fashion style is a little bit retro and a little bit from the future. I like combining pieces that have a mod or vintage feeling with pieces that feel like they come from 2999.

RUNWAY: People compare your ever-evolving, chameleon-like style to Madonna or Lady Gaga often, are they influe

nces on your fashion? How do you develop your own identity as an artist?

MEITAL: I love their style but I think my style is very much my own thing. I’ve always worn clogs, way before they were ever a trendy wardrobe staples. I love bright colors and have always been noticed for my unique sense of style. I think dressing up is like asking a question to yourself: “who do you want to be today?” You get to play with all your sides as a woman: girl, sexy, fiery, empowered — all though style. I like that I can put on a dress and feel one way and then add a hat and feel totally different. Great fashion is all in the details.

RUNWAY: You also recently authored a book “Love and Other Bad Habits” a few years ago and can add radio host to your impressive repertoire of skills, so other than conquering the world or solving global hunger, what is next for you?

MEITAL: Well I’ve got a TV pilot in the works and I’m back in the studio cranking out new music for all my amazing fans. I think what I love most about my life is that I never know whats coming, and every day is a little bit of a surprise. I feel lucky for that.

In the Green Light – The Great Gatsby Brings High Fashion Back to the 1920's

The Great Gatsby roars back into the public eye May 10th when Baz Luhrmann’s much-anticipated film event-of-the-year debuts on the silver screen (May 15th in Europe at the Cannes Film Festival; May 30th in Australia). The modern day adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel has encountered quite a lot of adversity, from weather troubles on location to financial investors backing out, but finally anticipators can breathe a collective sigh of relief with the imminent release dates. With an all-star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey MacGuire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fischer and more, the film was sure to receive attention even without the commercial hype. Nonetheless, hype it has; with legendary brands like Tiffany & Co. and Brooks Brothers showcasing Gatsby-inspired collections, an enormous collaboration of major artists on the soundtrack, and even a touring exhibit of the Prada costumes featured in the movie, it’s become nearly as impossible to ignore as Jay Gatsby himself. A resounding effect of vintage glamour’s rebirth is already being felt on the creative world, as all the glitz of the 1920’s returns to bedazzle us once again.

Standing at about $100 million in production costs, Luhrmann’s Gatsby has pulled all the stops, and doesn’t appear to be coming up short in any department – especially the clothing! The amazing ensemble of over 1700 original vintage-inspired pieces created by costume and set designer Catherine Martin were drawn from countless hours of research to be as period authentic and eye-catching as possible. A collaboration between Martin and Miuccia Prada pulled 40 designs from the Prada vault, tweaking and re-tooling dresses from more recent seasons to be worn by the East Egg elite. However only one of the selections made it to the main cast; the Prada Spring/Summer 2010 chandelier gown that co-lead Carey Mulligan wears as Daisy Buchanan in a key party scene. Certain jewelry pieces were created by Martin with the aid of Tiffany & Co., taking styles from the archives and translating them into The Great Gatsby Collection, which is available to the public. For the men’s costumes, over-a-century standing brand Brooks Brothers was enlisted for 500 unique looks that Martin also whipped up from the company’s archives (possibly the most accurate choice, considering Fitzgerald himself was a known customer). These styles have been brought from the screen to the streets, with an entire line inspired by the join-up with Martin on sale at Brooks Brothers now. With every glimpse of the dapper and glittering cast, excitement has been mounting, calling louder and louder for the revival of “speak-easy chic”.

A couple of the iconic

“Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby,” on display at Prada’s flagship store in New York City. Showcasing actual costumes from the film, including all 40 of Prada’s collaborative outfits with Martin as well as a few select suits designed for the cast by Brooks Brothers. The exhibit will be in NY from May 1st – May 12th, then it will set sail for a tour of Japan (June) and China (July).

In the ’20s, New York’s high society defined haute fashion by habit of traveling to European locales such as Paris and London, and returning with cutting-edge styles and trends to the States. All things “across the pond,” were in-vogue, and influential designers like Chanel and Lanvin set the stage for the dawn of the iconic flapper style. For women in the United States, the right to vote and increasing independence from men led to their becoming more involved in sporting activities and physical fitness. They also fell into styling their hair quite short, in sleek bobs and curly crops, adopting more masculine attitudes along with appearances. The Victorian sentiments of their mothers’ day was fading fast from consciousness. Prohibition had fueled a rise in seedy moral values as the line between criminal and entrepreneur was blurred. It was also the first time that the middle class was becoming as fashionable as the elite, creating an even greater social separation from the very poor. Men were at home in crisp three-piece suits completed by bowties, cuff links, and carved head walking-sticks. Ivy League style was all the rage, straw boater hats (featured prominently by Martin throughout the film) and complementary cardigans bedecking dapper gents on their casual days off. It was definitely a time when things appeared to have nowhere to go but up; the skyscrapers, the stocks, and the ambitions of the upper class.

The short skirts of common modern-day “flapper girl,” costumes often portray a misconception of 1920’s fashion. In 1919, hemlines still fell barely above the ankles. It wasn’t actually until about 1925, when Fitzgerald published his novel, that hemlines just below the knee could be commonly observed. Of course, with his finger on the pulse of society, and regular interaction with New York’s fashionable elite, it is no wonder that the author would have accurately predicted the trend. It is known he frequented gatherings of Long Island socialites, where it was purported he drew inspiration for the characters and plot line of Gatsby. Between the time he had published the novel and the great stock market crash of 1929, the length of women’s skirts fluctuated, rising high as the financial market, only later to plummet back to Earth in a similar fashion. To quote Luhrmann in a recent interview on the matter; “Fundamentally, that book is about a period in which fashion itself became the fashion we know today. In the 1920s, young girls were running around the streets of New York in what their mothers considered to be their underwear, while the mothers were wearing dresses down to their ankles. That moment was the first youth quake, and it was also a fashion quake, and I think that’s what people get excited about.”

With the popularization of dances such as the Charleston, young women began to wear skirts designed to “flap,” about their calves and reveal a little more leg than you would have expected from initial glances. These ladies were out to dance till the sunrise, and their clothing was created just for the task.

The trendiest clothing items and accessories of the era – including Windsor-frame glasses, the tight-fitted cloche hat, and Oxford shoes – left their mark on fashion, and are working into the outfits of today. It’s as if they’ve patiently waited for a launch back into the mainstream, which Lurhmann’s Gatsby will certainly provide the perfect platform for. The first symptoms of a “Roaring ’20s,” resurgence are already popping up, like the subtle vintage hints found in Lacoste‘s S/S 2013 ad campaign (one of the models even dons an aforementioned cloche) and the rising popularity of round sunglasses. The shift dress, with its loose and almost shapeless appearance, became prevalent in that natty era due to the ease of sewing the pattern; today it’s making a comeback on the catwalk, such as in Louis Vuitton and Rachel Zoe‘s S/S 2013 lines, and finding a new home in the contemporary woman’s wardrobe. The darling headbands and hairpieces, along with brooches and draping necklaces worn in the party scenes, are sure to generate as much envy and adoration from young women as they would have in 1926. Kitten-heels are also primed for a comeback, the shorter heel getting more focus from costume designer Martin. Oh, and don’t forget that timeless Eton crop; what girl wouldn’t be tempted to capture Daisy’s “innocent,” charm? It seems only natural we’re about to be hit by a wave of vintage glam. Only time will tell how much the new film adaptation will effect global fashion consciousness, but we’re going to take a leaf out of Fitzgerald’s book and call this one like we see it!

The parallels between 1920s Western culture and that of the current decade are vast, and can be observed through more than just fashion. Women’s rights, Prohibition, war, and the struggle of the self-made man are still hot topic issues. The Great Gatsby has long been considered an American classic for the entrancing way it captured a pivotal moment in history that may have eluded us otherwise. It was a time of casual rebellion against social norms, with the youth dancing their nights away to the new, unconventional grooves known as “jazz music,” and increasingly questionable morals brought on by the injustices felt surrounding Prohibition. The gap between the “haves,” and the “have nots,” was becoming more of a chasm, and the European bourgeoisie mindset was taking over America’s Eastern seaboard. The world was on the brink of great change, just as it is now.

Left-to-Right: Tobey MacGuire as Nick Carraway, Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker, and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan.

Dapper gents and dainty dames – from left-to-right, Tobey MacGuire as Nick Carraway, Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker, and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan.

Baz Luhrmann, the film’s director, has put all his eggs (East and West) in The Great Gatsby basket, and for good reason. The corroborative forces behind its entirety have ensured the story’s splash will be as enormous as it should have been on its first publishing run. Contemporary and traditional evocations have been woven together to propel the apologue of Jay Gatsby into the mind of modern man. The dazzling costumes and set design are already sending us reeling back through history, ready to bring a taste of the party to here-and-now. No matter what, Gatsby has already accomplished a central goal; the classic tale will not soon be forgotten. The circle Luhrmann has intended to create is almost complete, tossing us down onto the streets of New York City circa 1922, as if it’s happening all over again in our own world, today.

As said best by the great man himself (or Leo, if you prefer), “Can’t repeat the past? Why, of course you can. Of course you can.”

MODEL PORTFOLIO TIPS

by Marlow DeVonne

“1. Be on time.

A good first impression is everything. I always tell models to arrive 15 minutes before their call time. If for some reason you are going to be even one minute late, make sure to call whoever is expecting you and let them know. Everyone’s time is valuable!

2. Have representation and build a good relationship with your mother agency.

Finding a mother agency is so important on so many levels. They’re the ones who are going to build your portfolio. You want to be with an agency that knows they’re going to get you a lot of work, send you on many castings and are inspired to help your modeling career blossom.

3. A healthy model is a working model.

Take care of your body by working out and eating healthy. Always drink a lot of water and eat something before a photo or runway shoot. Sometimes…”

Hettienne Park takes us inside her intriguing new series, Hannibal.

Wow, the previews for “Hannibal” are intriguing, we are excited to watch. Can you tell us a little bit more about the show and it’s take on Hannibal and of course more about your character “Beverly Katz”?

“Hannibal” is based on the Thomas Harris novels, re-imagined by Bryan Fuller. It’s the prequel to Red Dragon, though it is contemporary. It’s the story before the story when Will Graham first meets Hannibal Lecter, before Hannibal is known as Hannibal the Cannibal where the bromance and the mind games begin.

I play Beverly Katz, an FBI crime scene investigator specializing in hair and fiber. She’s sharp and sassy, and the only woman on the team. She works with Brian Zeller (Aaron Abrams) and Jimmy Price (Scott Thompson) under Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne). Jack brings on Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) who is complex and damaged, but the best profiler around. And we hunt down serial killers.

Did you have to do a lot of research for this role?

We worked closely with a forensics expert who trained us as much as he could before we began shooting. And he was there on set with us through the season as a consultant. It’s an incredible process just processing a crime scene, not to mention what you’re exposed to. We also worked with a SWAT team who are in several scenes with us when we’re out in the field. They coached us on how to handle weapons, various protocols and maneuvers. We all wanted to try to be as authentic as possible. We’re so lucky to work with all these guys.

You have thrived in all the mediums, film, television and theatre. Do you have a favorite of the three? What is the biggest difference for you as an actor?

Gosh, I feel like I’m just getting started. I don’t have a favorite because I love doing it all. And it’s all so different. Theatre is intense and amazing because you’re doing it live eight times a week and sharing every moment with the audience with no second chances if you screw up. When I’ve worked on films, you don’t get any instant feedback and are at the mercy of your director and editor, but unlike television, there’s a clear and distinct beginning, middle, and end. With television, as a guest star, you’re jumping into this already running machine where everyone’s been working together and you’re the new kid at school. It also feels fast and furious. Being on a series with multiple episodes, you get scripts every week, rewrites on the fly, and you don’t necessarily know where your character will end up. And while you get a rhythm and vibe with your co-stars, you work with a different director each episode. But if I’m working on good material with good people, it doesn’t matter to me what medium it is. I love it all. Having said all that, “Hannibal” is most definitely the most thrilling project I’ve worked on so far.

You star on this series alongside Laurence Fishburne and Hugh Dancy. You’ve worked opposite Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close and Alan Rickman. Who are some other actors that you would like to work with?

Oh God. There are too many to name them all. Off the top of my head…Bryan Cranston, Toni Collette, Tony Shalhoub, Marion Cottillard, Chris Cooper, Javier Bardem, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Gosling, Vanessa Redgrave, Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper, John Malkovich, Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Will Farrel, Kristen Wiig, Anthony Hopkins, Robert DeNiro, Tommy Lee Jones…I could go on and on and on.

Since this is Runway, let’s talk a bit about fashion. What is your favorite go to outfit for a casual day? A night out? Ever tempted to raid your character’s closet?

I guess on any given day, I’ll probably be wearing leggings or skinny jeans with some old T-shirt and a pair of boots. On a night out, I’ll probably be wearing the same thing with a pair of sky high heels and some maquillage of course, or a muted sequined mini skirt with a wife beater under some kind of long sleeve jacket.

I’m always tempted to raid my character’s closet! She’s not exactly a fashion plate considering she’s either in the lab or drawing a gun, but her threads are still pretty hot. Our costume designer has great taste. I’ve got my eye on a couple of leather jackets, a few funky tops, and a pair of knee high boots.

I know everyone is dying to see your new show but what are your top three reasons people should watch?

That’s easy. Mads Mikkelson, Hugh Dancy, and Laurence Fishburne. HOT, HOT, and HOT.

RUNWAY to Real Way – Macramé Inspirations from Versace

The S/S 2013 collection by Versace screams warrior goddess with a big splash of feminine chic. The Medusa-head motif that accents almost every piece emphasizes the hypnotic power of a woman’s look, which is what we feel the whole collection is really about. Donatella has been wowing us more and more every year, but this season her influence can definitely be felt reverberating onto other designers. Although there have been several attempts by major labels to popularize the Gladiator sandal-boot in recent years (Chanel Cruise 2007, S/S 2011), the trend didn’t really catch on until it hit the catwalk last fall. The strapping, or criss-crossing of material up the calf carries an air of Amazon babe just perfect for summer soirees. The trend has extended to strappy ankle-length ‘flops as well, from flats to wedges and heels. We’ve taken our top pick from the runway (the Versace Macramé Micro Shorts) and created a few looks around them that are waaay more affordable. Check out the shopping guide below to get the haute look in YOUR wardrobe!

Checking in with The Client List star Rebecca Field

“The Client List” took Lifetime by storm last season. What can viewers expect from your character and the show for season 2?

You can expect it to be BIGGER, FUNNIER, NAUGHTIER, MORE DRAMATIC and MORE TOUCHING….Riley’s life is turned upside down even more so by Kyle’s return at the end of last season and my character let’s just say she has even more on her plate this season….you’ll get to dive further into my life!

You are having to keep a pretty big secret on the series, have you ever had to keep a secret like that in real life?

What is your advice to someone who has to keep a secret like that?

Yeah, I’ve had to keep some pretty big secrets in my life. My advice is, be a good friend and keep the secret and seek professional help if the burden’s too much! ;0)
Any dream guest-stars or story lines for the new season?
We already have some dream guest stars and recurring guest stars. Greg Grunberg who plays my husband Dale is a dream guest star, just so happy that he’s back and with us so much this season! Can’t say anything about storylines or I’ll give too much away! Guess you’ll just have to tune in TONIGHT at 10pm to Lifetime.
Now for the fashion related questions. How would you describe our personal style? Ever tempted to steal clothing from your character?

I’d say my personal style was non-existent and now’s it’s evolving. Being on this show I’ve learned more about fashion and started to enjoy it much more. I always steal clothes and borrow them from Lacey’s closet! She’s got some good stuff!
If you could swap wardrobes with any character on television, who would it be?

The only TV I’m finding I can be into these days is pretty much “The Client List”…so perhaps Riley Parks’ wardrobe or Lacey’s!
You have gorgeous skin and hair, any secrets you can pass on to our readers?

Thank you! I regret not starting a skin regimen much earlier so that would be one piece of advice START EARLY!! Wear sunscreen EVERY DAY and drink lots of water. And hair, I would say don’t over wash your hair, so don’t wash EVERY day. And do some deep conditioning once a week. I know for me when I’m working my hair really takes a beating with curling and products all that heat and such every day so I also like to give it a break and not do so much styling when I’m off the clock.
Please let us know where we can find you on Facebook and Twitter and if you have any charities that you want to bring attention to.

KIM PORTER

A master of modernism, Kim Porter is an inspiration to moms, models and women everywhere. Born in Columbus, Georgia, Porter quickly realized she was too big for this small town, packed her bags and moved to New York City at the sweet, tender age of 16 with a modeling contract at Elite Model Management. It wasn’t long before she was jet-setting world-wide working with power-house designers like Versace in high fashion hot spots like Milan and Paris. Utilizing her witty business sense cultivated in her since she was young and a core set of Southern family values, Kim proved herself to be both conscientious and vivacious in her approach, accomplishing a superior modeling career working on major campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, Sean Jean and Pantene as well as gracing the pages of Glamour, Essence, Cosmopolitan and Elle just to name a few. Her acting career also blossomed at a young age, getting her start by working on The Cosby Show and eventually sharing the screen with film legends Tatum O’Neal in “Wicked Wicked Games,” Hill Harper in “Mama I Want to Sing” and in “Brothers” with DL Hughley and Gabrielle Union with her most current project being VH1’s “Single Ladies” Recent endeavors have put Porter behind the mighty pen and into a production position as she has worked on novels, screenplays and creatively produced photoshoots for several well-known artists such as Snoop Dogg.

With an undeniable gift for acting, singing and style paired with her natural, stunning beauty, this debutante queen of Georgia grew to become royalty of high fashion and entertainment. Kim Porter now part model, part mom, part mega-star is the epitome of a woman who can do it all, and do it perfectly. This woman has a ferocious ability to not only take on the entertainment industry but completely re-define it, operating by a higher calling. Inspired by the things she loves most in this world, her children and her family, Kim has successfully set new standards by infusing her passion to keep it real into every single little thing she puts her finger on giving it the golden touch. With a new children’s clothing line coming out soon, running her own business and a home with music mogul Sean Diddy Combs, I’m surprised she even had time to sit down with me, to say the least even sit down at all because she she’s too busy making magic and blazing trails for moms everywhere.

Kim is generous in imparting a slice of her wisdom and sharing some of her best tips with us on how to rock the runway while being a mother of four with famed counterpart Combs, how to understand the power of the brand and the vision but to never lose sight of what is really important at the end of the day. I can tell you one thing, after seeing thousands of faces, flashing lights, traveling to exotic places and fitting after fitting with designers and meeting after meeting to keep her business thriving, this mommy’s favorite sight to see at the end of each and every day are the faces of her smiling children.
