France Moves to Ban Ultrathin Fashion Models

By JASON CHOW : CBS MEDIANET

PARIS—French lawmakers have voted in favor of a law that would ban excessively thin fashion models from the runway and potentially fine their employers in a move that prompted resistance in the modeling industry.

The country’s National Assembly on Friday supported an amendment that would forbid anybody under a certain level of body mass index, or BMI, from working as a runway model.

Those who hire underweight models could be fined as much as €75,000 ($82,460) and face up to six months in prison.

The point of the bill is to combat anorexia, said Olivier Véran, a doctor and the Socialist deputy from southeastern France who brought the idea forward.

“The law is to protect models, who are getting so thin that they’re in danger,” Mr. Véran told The Wall Street Journal late Friday. “It’s also to protect adolescents. This image of so-called ideal beauty augments the risk of eating disorders.”

Doctors say that a healthy BMI, which takes into account the weight and height of a person, is between 18.5 and 24.5. Mr. Véran didn’t suggest an appropriate BMI level for models, saying France’s workplace health authority should determine the number.

France’s move—which follows similar measures put in place in Italy and Spain—may ultimately force top haute couture brands to change the preferred profile of ultrathin models as a showcase for their latest clothes.

Paris, home to influential fashion weeks, is a hub for models who seek lucrative work on runways and fashion magazines.

The amendment still requires approval by France’s Senate before becoming enacted into law, but Mr. Véran expects it to pass and be enforced by the end of the year.

Still, the modeling industry in France opposes the proposed measures.

Isabelle Saint-Félix, secretary-general of SYNAM, a model agency trade organization, called the proposed amendment as “discrimination,” one that could potentially hurt the French fashion industry.

“Our models are thin, not sick. They are young and thin,” she said. “The government forgets that the fashion industry is international. Ninety percent of our models are foreigners. How can French agencies be competitive if they’re held to one standard in France that others are not in other countries?”

In 2007, Spain enacted regulations that barred models below a BMI level of 18.5 from being featured in fashion shows. That same year, Italy started insisting on health certificates for models as well as banning models under 16 years old on its runways.

In 2013, Israel enacted similar BMI rules for models, as well as requiring all photos that appear in the media that have been edited for the models’ appearance to be labeled.

The U.S. government hasn’t legislated rules for American models. The trade group Council of Fashion Designers of America has set minimum age requirements for models who appear during New York Fashion Week, though it doesn’t have similar body mass index rules.

Designer Socks and the Modern Man

Men are more into fashion today than ever before. Decades ago, if you were into fashion and designer clothes it usually meant you were wealthy or determined to be. Men’s high fashion isn’t like it used to be, though. More designers are making their lines available to everyone.
Designers are also paying more attention to all of the clothes men wear. For years, it seemed that the only options for men’s undergarments were white athletic socks, white briefs, and maybe some black or brown dress socks. Those were pretty boring years for men’s fashion.
These days are different. With consumers and designers on the same page when it comes to men’s fashion, we have more options than ever. Let’s take as an example the humble sock.

The Comfort of the Designer Athletic Sock
Athletes everywhere will tell you that one of the most essential pieces of their wardrobe are socks. Improper socks contribute to injury. The best socks, though, will give the athlete extra cushion where he needs it—on the ball and heel of his foot. Plus, the sock will have some stretch. This stretch enables the sock to keep its shape and prevent slippage. Therefore, there won’t be as much friction. Also, the stretch ensures a comfortable, stable feel without cutting off circulation.
You don’t need to be a hardcore athlete to enjoy the benefits of designer athletic socks. You don’t even need to be a weekend workout warrior. Athletic socks are great for those lazy days when you want to lounge around in something comfortable, cushiony, and warm.

Dapper Designer Dress Socks for the Modern Man
If you’re going to a cocktail party, a benefit, or just want to dress your best for work, you’ll need some high quality dress socks. Not only are white athletic socks inappropriate for wearing with a suit, so are ill fitting dress socks. Dapper dress socks fit your foot well. They have nylon and/or stretch added to them so that they conform to the shape of your foot. This ensures a comfortable experience for you, plus you avoid embarrassing sock overhang—when the material from the back of your sock hangs over the back of your shoe.

Casual Socks Are Just As Important
When it comes to casual socks, don’t think you need to settle with wearing athletic socks all of the time. These days, men have way more options in the sock department than they used to. Casual designer socks are comfortable, well designed and crafted, and made from the best materials available. Here are some examples:
Mid–calf: Designers know how to have fun, and they want their customers to have fun too. That’s why more designers are offering exciting designs like flags (to show your support for the World Cup or the Olympics), stripes, and plaids. They also have styles that are reminiscent of days gone by, something you might imagine a stylish gent from the 30s or 40s would wear on his day off.

Over the calf: Whether you like the mid–calf or over the calf socks, it’s important to have options. Some brands give you options like pink polka dots or pink plaid. The over the calf styles available will definitely help you show off your individuality and your fun side.

Try the Dirty Dozen: Available in mid–calf and over the calf, the dirty dozen are a hand selected variety of socks chosen for you from the VK Nagrani men’s designer sock collection. As the pioneer of men’s designer socks, who better to help you choose your sock wardrobe?

Why You Should Go For Designer
It’s pretty self-evident, but it bears repeating—designer socks fit better. That is the number one reason you should invest in them. Designers don’t believe in the one size fits all philosophy. They know that every foot is different and take this into consideration, from the design down to the materials used to make the sock. These types of socks are not your run of the mill, average, shopping mall store brand socks.
Designers care about you as an individual and want to provide you with the best fashionable clothing experience. So, while there may be a little more to invest initially, in the long run men’s designer socks are going to last you a long time, will remain comfortable, and won’t easily lose their wow factor.
Whatever your sock needs, designer collections — like the VK Nagrani men’s designer socks collection—will have something for you. The selection of dress socks and casual socks available will blow your mind. Designers are doing their best to turn the page of men’s fashion and socks. So, the next time you want to buy a fantastic pair of socks, take a look at the options you have with men’s designer socks.

Max Azria Is Listing Los Angeles Mansion for $85 Million

Fashion designer Max Azria is putting his 17-bedroom Los Angeles home on the market for $85 million.

Designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in the 1930s, the Holmby Hills property has about 30,000 square feet of living space, according to Jaime Cuevas of the Agency, who is listing the home with the Agency’s Mauricio Umansky and Billy Rose. In the two-story home’s entryway, there is a floor-to-ceiling waterfall chandelier made from over 150,000 hand-placed crystals, Mr. Cuevas said. A home theater has a candy and popcorn bar. In Mr. Azria’s office, there is a domed, gold-leaf ceiling. The kitchen has a walk-in refrigerator—the Azrias have frequently used the property to entertain and host events, and are known for their Shabbat dinners, Mr. Cuevas said.

Masters of Sex

Romantic songs, sappy love stories and cinematic fairytale endings.
All of these items are the juiciest ingredients of what forms our ideas
of love as children. And while swooning over the leading man in the
most recent Nicholas Spark’s movie may inspire you to find your own
“true love”, there is much more that goes into lasting romance than the
intention of happily ever after, or a well-written script.
If you break down the nitty-gritty, not so sexy, science-driven side
of love, you can see that our brain is the one responsible for those
butterflies, more so than our heart. Before you write me off as a cynical
anti-romantic, look at the facts. I myself love, love. Who doesn’t adore
the fluttering of the butterflies or an exhilarating first kiss? And although
so much mystery lies in the beginning of a relationship, what is most
interesting is how our bodies get past the feeling of ‘like’ to ‘infatuation’,
and eventually, to love.

I Love You with My Whole… Brain.
There are primarily three sections of our brain that help us to interpret affection, to recognize
reward and feel accepted. These include the hippocampus, the medial insula and the anterior
cingulate. Other parts of our brain that contribute to how we feel within a relationship include
the pituitary gland, which regulates our hormones, the amygdala which moderates our fear
and stress levels, and the hypothalamus that produces the happy chemicals that make it
possible to “fall in love”.

The Drug that is Love.
If we break down the chemicals released into
the body, we can see how the process works.
The hypothalamus releases dopamine, and
as dopamine increases, serotonin decreases.
Which is why being “lovesick” causes loss of
appetite, improved mood or feelings of obsessive
infatuation. The body also produces a substance
known as NGF, or Nerve Growth Factor. The
higher the amount of NGF, the more intense your
feelings will be at the onset, and throughout, your
relationship. As couples move from the stages of
puppy love into a deeper connection, the oxytocin
and vasopressin take over. Stored in the pituitary
gland, these hormones, when present together in
high amounts, have been proven to contribute to
the success of long-term relationships.
Too Much of a Good Thing.

The intense feelings of falling in love is usually
short-lived. Rarely lasting longer than a year, most
people’s brains cannot sustain this euphoric feeling
because one’s brain can become overloaded in
this blissful state. As silly as that sounds, it is quite
easy to explain. When we are falling in love, activity in our frontal cortex decreases, making
us not as sharp to make wise decisions. The amygdala also shuts down when you’re head
over heels, masking your fear. This explains why couples are more adventurous when trying
to impress their new partner, doing things they normally wouldn’t do, or making decisions
they normally wouldn’t make. Las Vegas impulse weddings are the first thing that comes to
mind, followed by first dates that include daredevil activities such as skydiving or tattooing
your significant others name to various body parts. It is in the brain’s best interest not to
remain in this state for too long, if only for self-preservation.
Love at First Sight… Fact or Fiction?

In a study conducted by Dr. Helen Fisher, PhD, only 11% of couples polled said they had
found love at first sight. With the rush of chemicals, and high levels of brain activity, it
is possible to see why couples would feel as if it was instantaneous, soul-mate level love.
Especially if their relationship started out during an exciting event or time in their lives, as an
adrenaline rush can create a bond between people. And although I am not ruling out that
magical, cosmic possibility, it’s best advised that couples take the time to really get to know
one another, to bond over similarities in life goals, their character traits and their priorities,
more so than basing their relationship future solely on fleeting chemical reactions.

The Shanghai Disney Resort will feature a Magic Kingdom theme park and two themed hotels when it opens next year. But there’s more to it as well; the Treasure Cove, a themed land that will include a “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride designed specifically for Chinese guests. Concept rendering below:

Celeb April Fools’ Day Pranks

It’s April Fools’ Day… the one day of the year celebrities get to turn the tables on entertainment outlets. (You know, the other 364 days of the year is free game for somemembers of the media to make up stories about the stars.)

A few celebs have had fun coming up with fake headlines — some more believable than others. Here are a few of the buzziest:

Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs Are Engaged

T-Pain had jaws dropping with this one. During an interview with Vulture, the rapper claimedR.Pattz had popped the question to FKA twigs.

“Well, the first time we even met each other, we met in the studio,” he said when asked if FKA twigs would be on his upcoming album. “Her music’s changed a lot since then. But she’s on tour so much, and anytime I call her, she’s in a different place. And she’s engaged now, so that’s about to be a whole other thing.” When asked if the two were set to tie the knot, he replied, “Yeah [she’s engaged], to ol’ Patty [Robert Pattinson]. I don’t know if she wanted anybody to know that …”

Just kidding! Perhaps after hearing the sound of girls’ hearts breaking everywhere — or getting an angry call from ol’ Patty — he went to Instagram and captioned the above photo: “Added a little #AprilFools to my interview with Vulture Magazine today. Check it out!!!!”

Though it would have been a pretty good prank due to the sheer randomness that it would be T-Pain to spill the engagement news, People is now reporting that Pattinson and FKA twigs are indeed planing to get hitched. Stay tuned…

Katy Perry Chops Off Her Hair

Katy Perry still has us scratching our heads with this one, but we think it’s all in good fun. “I asked for the Kris Jenner,” she captioned the above snapshot of herself sporting a sassy new’ do.

We’re inclined to believe the pop star just threw on a wig or used a great Photoshop app… but the “Roar” singer does love to switch things up. TBD on this one.

Happy Endings Is Coming Back

Back in February, a countdown clock ran with the slogan “it’s almost a new day,” leading many former viewers to believe that the cult show could return. Well, the time was up today and alas, it was just a two-month tease for nothing. Creator David Caspe told Entertainment Weekly that a writer or an assistant with access to the Twitter account set up the countdown clock as a gag without his knowledge. Boo.

Bachelor Stars Sean and Catherine Lowe Are Expecting

Here was another joke that pissed a lot of people off. Sean and Catherine Lowe announced on Instagram that they were expecting their first child, captioning the above photo “17 weeks.” People then later published a fake confirmation from the Bachelor winner’s rep saying the father is Andy Dick. Ha ha? This seems pretty elaborate for news many could take or leave. Regardless, a few folks on social media weren’t fans of the gag:

Michelle Obama stirred things up in an off shoulder all white dress at BET’s ‘Black Girls Rock’ event on March 28th, 2015.

Michelle Obama51, is known for her less than traditional fashion as the First Lady of the United States, but this sexy dress is her most extreme choice yet!

After touring Asia in nothing but colorful and floral looks, Michelle switched things up by wearing a white off-the-shoulder knee-length Zac Posen Fall 2014 gown.

“The bustier detail adds sex appeal to the ensemble, and the First Lady really set this look off by pairing the statement gown with pointed silver metallic pumps. She wore glitzy silver chandelier earrings, and these gorgeous jewels were a perfect finish to the shoulder baring look.”
