Winter Skin Tips 2015

Winter Tips for Skin

They say winter is the most wonderful time of the year. However wonderful it may be, it can be horrible when it comes to wreaking havoc with our skin. Amped up temps on the furnace will suck the moisture straight out, while cold, blustery days cause tight, chapped and even irritated skin. However, you don’t have to succumb to horrible skin this season. We have the steps you need to keep your skin looking better than ever.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 1:

Swap your harsh, oil-controlling cleansers for a milder formula. One like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is ideal because it is mild and soothes skin while it washes. Swap out your soap or body wash as well; you’ll want to pick one that is rich in vitamins to promote healthy, moisturized skin over the course of the winter season.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 2:

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. We often forget this step no matter what the season. Dead skin cells that are not exfoliated away sit on top of our skin and don’t allow proper absorption of skincare products. Skip rough, abrasive scrubs and exfoliators and stick with one like ExfoliKate Gentle, which uses micro beads and natural fruit enzymes to gently exfoliate dead skin cells away. You can also use a soft washcloth, using it to rub your cleanser in circular motions while in the shower.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 3:

Drink away….water that is. Skip the soda, say no thank you to the second cocktail and instead, replace it with more water. Drinking water is key to keep your body hydrated from the inside out. We naturally drink less water in the winter, which causes our skin to be dehydrated. So, even when you are not thirsty, drink up. Still having trouble taking in the recommended amount of water per day? Try a cup of hot water with a squeeze of lemon or lime. You will get the benefits of hydration while warming up at the same time.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 4:

Slather on a rich moisturizer. The ideal winter moisturizer is slightly heavier than your summertime version. One we like is the Lumene Bright Now Vitamin C Night Cream, which helps to not only hydrate skin while you sleep but brighten it too. Your body moisturizer (yes, you should be using one daily) should also be amped up for winter. Slather it on after you step out of the shower while your skin is still damp to lock in all that moisture.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 5:

The struggle of chapped lips is real and becomes oh-so-apparent during winter when our pout is exposed to all the elements while our body gets covered up in cozy sweaters and boots. Use a balm or ointment, rather than a chap stick, on lips regularly to keep them moist and protected from dry winter air. Avoid licking your lips at all costs, it causes dehydration which also equals dry, chapped lips.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 6:

The sun isn’t shining but that doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen. A leader in the skincare industry, The International Dermal Institute suggests wearing a sunscreen year-round. Worried about breakouts? IDI suggests purchasing a non-comedogenic (this means it won’t clog your pores) sunscreen. They also recommend getting a double-duty sunscreen product, like ones that are incorporated into your daily moisturizer. Then you can skip the extra step required to put on sun block.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 7:

Remember that your scalp is skin too. Our scalps are often forgotten about when taking care of our skin, but scalp issues rank high in winter skin complaints. Dry, itchy scalp and dandruff are two common issues in the winter. Hit them head on with an ultra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and then use a product specifically designed for the scalp. Hair care experts at the award-winning Carol Carey Couture Salon in California, recommend Kerastase Initialiste, a skincare-inspired serum specifically for the scalp.

Wonderful Winter Skin Step 8:

When in doubt, check with an expert. If your skin doesn’t seem to be responding to winter well and you develop excessively dry or cracked skin, a visit to your esthetician or dermatologist may be in order. One of these skin care specialists can help direct you towards the perfect product regimen for your skin this season.

2015 SAG Awards: Fashion Round-Up

The 21st annual SAG Awards took place on January 25th and the stars shined on the red carpet in an array of colors and styles. Nominee Keira Knightley was among the best dressed in a beautiful plum Erdem maternity dress that accentuated her mother-to-be glow. Co-stars of a not-yet-titled film, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara wowed in curve-hugging dresses. Vergara accessorized her sexy red dress with her own jewelry line by Kay Jewelers, while Witherspoon wore a custom Giorgio Armani white one-shoulder dress. Also in white was another of Sofia Vergara’s co-stars, Modern Family’s Ariel Winter was a voluptuous bombshell in a Zac Posen gown.

Birdman star and winner for Best Ensemble Cast, Emma Stone wins for most fashion forward of the night. Stone’s Dior Couture look featured a blazer over a sheer gown with a train that tripped co-star Naomi Watts when the Birdman cast went to accept their award.

Julianne Moore’s green beaded Givenchy gown stunned on the red carpet, flooding social media with comments as soon as she appeared. Also stunning viewers was Lupita Nyong’o in a vibrant multi-colored Elie Saab number. Other female-fashion highlights were Jennifer Aniston in gold, Julia Roberts in a black pantsuit, and Claire Danes in Marc Jacobs.

As for the men, Matthew McConaughey wore a dashing blue suit jacket, taking a cue from former co-star Jared Leto’s Critics Choice Awards ensemble. Leto went back to traditional black for the SAGs, but added pink socks and boutonniere to make the look pop. Lead Actor winner, Eddie Redmayne looked dapper in a double-breasted Prada suit.

If You Make One Resolution This Year, Soothe Yourself

As someone who is a seasoned massage fan, I will be honest that it can take more than just a relaxing rub down to impress me. From day spas to the discount massage therapy studios that are popping up in major cities throughout the nation, massage is more accessible than ever. Which means its gotten harder to find the right therapist, or a massage that stands out or delivers exactly what you’re looking for. With Soothe, I was pleasantly surprised with the entire process. From the easy booking, all the way to the end of the massage where I walked my therapist to the door after my relaxing and therapeutic massage, it was effortless on my part. Which is how a massage experience should feel.

How Soothe Works:
Soothe is the perfect massage solution for business professionals and busy individuals. With a wide range of availability, morning and late evening hours, and numerous therapists of various skill levels in cities all over the U.S., Soothe gives options. By using the Soothe App or visiting the website, customers can choose a massage customized to their preferences. Need therapeutic work and stretching? Select a sports or deep tissue massage. Had a long day and an even longer commute home and want a relaxing massage before falling asleep? Choose a relaxing Swedish. All available in three lengths. One hour, hour and a half, or the blissful two-hour session. They also offer customizable couples massages.

Why Choose Soothe:
Who wants to sit in traffic after commuting from work to get a massage, only having to get back into the car once your session is complete? Soothe sends a well-matched therapist right to your work or home. They also hire top industry therapists who’ve had extensive experience in the field, guaranteeing a great massage every time. I’ve unfortunately spent much time and money in spas who did not deliver on such quality.

The Extras:
Luxury service programs usually come with added fees, and this isn’t true with Soothe. You pay the massage price, that’s it. No travel fees and tipping is not required. And though this particular detail may vary, I have to mention that I appreciated that the therapist brought a hypoallergenic, natural, organic oil and the softest sheets.

Owner Merlin Kauffman stated, “Soothe is a more seamless, streamlined and efficient service.” And as a new customer, and fan, of Soothe, I can agree with Mr. Kauffman.

Amato By Furne One Spotlight

Originally from the Philippines, Furne first entered the fashion world by winning MEGA Magazine’s Young Designer Award in 1994, which was judged by Josie Natori. Josie snatched up Furne with an apprenticeship at his New York design house. In that same year, Furne nabbed first prize at Japan’s Women’s Wear Awards and went on to become a finalist at Manila’s Fashion Designer Awards just three years later.“When it comes to fashion, of course, I don’t like to be just like everybody else,” says Furne. “Having my own identity is very important to me. I design for my own pleasure and it is important for me to get the whole look right. So more than just the dress, I also like to play with the styling. Trying stuff and changing them around, until I achieve just the right and complete look.”To help achieve this right look Furne speaks of for Amato, which means “beloved” in Italian, he partnered with textile expert Rashid Ali to build the Avant Garde label. The Amato Couture boutique opened its doors in 2002 in Dubai, to provide an elite clientele with a bevy of hand-stitched designs and elaborately detailed creations. The Amato label prides itself on creative culture, eco-friendly ethics and fair policies. “Meshing cultures, using the region’s rare arts, layering it with eastern and western elements, I create unique pieces for my urbane and globalized clients, reflecting their personal and cultural identities,” Furne says. With his extra care and attention to his clientele, along with his undeniable respect for women, it wasn’t long before Furne was flooded with work. Every Amato collection is a representation of the silent strength of women. “My creativity is inspired by my mother and grandmother’s quintessential style that colored my vision,” explained Furne. “I have always tried to create exquisite and ethereal design tempered with a silent touch of strength. My collections aren’t for the faint hearted woman, but one who is comfortable in her skin; her ensembles are but a foil to reflect her inner persona.” Swarovski took notice of Furne’s fabulous Amato line, and commissioned him to design a glittering bridal dress, which was featured in their limited edition book, Unbridaled. Since then, Furne has continued to collaborate with Swarovski with outstanding collections for its Crystalized Swarovski Elements events.Furne’s brand has made many TV Appearances, including Germany’s Next Top Model, which had him working with Heidi Klum on several seasons, Americas Next Top Model Cycle 19’s finale episode, working with Tamar Braxton on tour with a one-on-one consultation with Tamar herself on The Braxton’s , and has launched Amato Couture into the forefront of the fashion world. His fresh, artistic and beautiful creations are sought out by celebrities like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, Lady Gaga, Jessie J, and Nicki Minaj just to name a few.In 2012, Furne brought Amato Couture to the United States, with his first major relationship and collaboration in Los Angeles with fashion stylist and branding rep Alexandra Lerma. Together they started conquering the Hollywood industry one stitch and fabulous project at a time. He has consistently pushed boundaries and evolved from a local Dubai label to a global explosion. Amato has been receiving praise and awards at every fashion week showing and now has an international cult following from royalty to celebritiesFurne’s next goal is to cement Amato as a global brand; one that can be more ready-to-wear than couture. With his Spring/Summer 2015 collection showing at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, Furne takes this as a good sign for the future. This was his second showing in New York, and to him, it is one of the biggest fashion industry honors. “This was my dream, I am living my childhood dream. I worked hard to achieve this dream and I think my determination brought me here,” he shared. To keep up-to-date with Amato by Furne One, check out: www.amatohautecouture.com. You can see a current list of projects the brand is working on, as well as beautiful fashion art.

What made you want to add more ready-to-wear fashions in the Amato line?We wanted to be able to cater to all of our followers, not just the socialites and royalty, but also to the everyday woman. The goal is to create something that is plain and simple like a blouse and a pair of shorts into something equally intricate and opulent as an Amato haute couture gown – but for a lower cost.Where does this leave Amato as far as couture goes?Amato is and always will be an haute couture brand. Our ready-to-wear line is more of an extension rather than a transition. What inspires you most when you design?I get inspired by so many things! From movies to TV shows and music to my travels and the different cultures I encounter.Growing up, who were your favorite designers?Designers like Christian Lacroix, Donna Karan, Coco Chanel and Armani were my favorites. What was the best piece of advice you have received in the fashion industry? The advice that really stuck to me was from my apprentice days in New York with designer, Josie Natori – ‘Always be responsible’. What was it like working with Heidi Klum?Heidi Klum has always been one of my favorite Victoria’s Secret Angels. Getting to work with such an amazing model such as Heidi was a completely unforgettable experience.

How much fun do you have getting to collaborate frequently with Swarovski? It is every designer’s dream and honor to collaborate with such a huge name such as Swarovski. Being able to work alongside people that shared the same aesthetic and vision allowed me to have complete creative freedom that meant limitless possibilities. Where do you see Amato going within the next five years?Amato intends to grow and expand from a singular brand into a global fashion empire. It sounds ambitious, I know, but then again, anything is possible. What is your favorite fashion trend for 2015?I love how many of the collections are influenced by what the people on the street are actually wearing. Basic articles of clothing such as t-shirts and shorts that used to be, well, ‘basic’, are given a minimalistic make-over coming out over-sized and boxy with exaggerated silhouettes that exude an air of nonchalance. What advice would you offer to inspiring designers?A lot of young designers think that the fashion industry is just about pretty dresses, fabulous parties and being famous. They often forget about the responsibilities that go along with it. The truth is, it’s all about having a clear vision of your aesthetic, good business acumen, hard work and perseverance.

LA Fashion Week Recap 2014

The fashion styles for S/S 2015 were quite diverse. From lingerie and swimwear presentations to edgy street wear and elegant gown collections, there was something for everyone to fall in love with. Design house Tumbler & Tipsy presented a street wear collection that was fun, feminine and flirty. Tipsy logo hats accessorized cropped tops, short shorts and day dresses in a palette of neon hues and animal prints. The dresses were more avant-garde than classic resort wear, embellished with items such as 3D lily pads, leaves and frogs to name a few. Zhang JingJing presented a collection that was less street, more sleek. The designer put forth, once again, a collection of gowns that stunned. The palette was soft in nude, blush and icy blues while pearl and stone embellishments sparkled under the lights. Open back draping and fitted bodices added tasteful sensuality. Dance and musical performances broke up the shows throughout the city, adding a unique, and very Californian, vibe to fashion week. Maya Hansen presented a collection that was futuristic and powerful. Reminiscent of a female warrior, her designs included corsets, swimwear and gowns all accented with studded metal embellishments. Facemasks also adorned a handful of models, and while the creations were innovative and colorful, they felt more Hollywood red carpet than every day wear.Jun Escario’s gown collection, though red carpet ready, is very wearable. The classic collection infused a modern edge through fabric choice, metallic accessories and drastic sweeping necklines and open backs. The champagne and gold mermaid style gown was a favorite of attendees. The cute and confident sleepwear brand by Crystal Hefner presented a wide range of loungewear and sleepwear items. The bra and pantie sets were sporty and comfortable in a palette of nudes and pale pink, and the sleepwear was fun and flirty. A plum robe and nightgown both featured black lace edging, while a two-piece sleepwear ensemble in charcoal was accented with feminine ruffles and pale pink headwear.

The Pedram Couture SS2015 collection presented at Style Fashion Week in L.A. was breathtaking and ethereal. Designer Pedram Pasha Taheri put forth a gown collection that was feminine, elegant and a little provocative. A sheer, low-cut floor length gown in nude was a star in its simplicity, while other designs were more vibrant and strong, including a satin, strapless baby blue and floral print and a metallic gold painted pantsuit. From daring to the demure, Los Angeles Fashion Week had it all. The weather was beautiful, the entertainers possessed true star power and the events are ones that will be remembered even after the stages have cleared and the champagne runs dry. Shadow Play: Find Your Perfect Winter Shade

Dark Skin:For ethnic skin tones, select soft rosy cheek colors, sultry cat-eyes, and deep plum-berry lip stains with lots of gloss. Darker skin requires more pigment to be visible, so rich lip hues help accentuate the mouth and jaw while keeping up the minimalist look. Avoid true reds as they will clash with your skin tone and look unnatural. For a bit more pop, a honey-brown hue or slight dab of creamy gold eye shadow will bring out your eyes. Especially during the winter months, avoid any unnatural hues when it comes to eye shadows such as blue, green, or purple, or eye enhancers like glitter or shimmer, as they are best reserved for the summer months.

Tan Skin:Those with tan skin can get away with much more color on all of their features, but also have to be extra cautious to properly balance their colors and features well. For dark eyes, gold tones and soft, earthy browns underneath a thick coat of mascara can do wonders, and light eyes are complemented well by dark, smoky browns. Bronze-skinned beauties will benefit from a matte mauve lip stain and very little to no blush. Because dark colors can quickly overpower your face, it is best to choose only one feature to play up while keeping the others muted.

Light Skin:Being light-skinned can be advantageous in the ability to wear a wider spectrum of makeup looks, but its downsides can be far and wide in the realm of being publicly wearable. When it comes to finding the right shade, many factors come into play, such as eye and hair color, face shape, and complexion, so more diligence is required when seeking out what’s best for you. A sleek, classic cat eye is always a go-to look for the eyes, but for the more adventurous at heart, try a cascading black and brown shadow with liquid liner on top. When it comes to cheek play, the soft lighting of the winter sun pulls out all the detail in your face, so it is best to go with a soft, red blush with warm undertones to pull out the color and keep your face from being washed out. Polish off the look with a rosy pink lip shimmer or cherry red gloss.

Fair Skin:Ladies with moonlit skin should be wary of deep colors as they can easily overtake your face, and not enough color can leave you looking washed out. Choose hues that are subtly vibrant but not too dark, just to ensure you’re not inadvertently making yourself look older than you really are. Just a little bit of color goes a long way and you want to be sure you are balancing your makeup properly. The best combinations for pale-skinned pretties are nude cream shadows, soft pink cheeks, and light, sheer lipstick or lip balm for just a touch of color. You may buy into the deep berry lips trend without going overboard by keeping the rest of your face a neutral color palette.

Hottest Celebrity Makeup Looks: Winter 2014

In make-up, trends for winter 2014 are seeing a drastic shift from the dewy finishes and rich hues of summer and pre-fall. Muted lips are popular now. Where we saw deep berry hues last year, we are seeing soft nudes. To avoid the look of the undead, choose a nude lipstick two to three shades darker than your natural skin tone and brush a light gloss over top to reflect light. Although the trend is to downplay the lip, you don’t want them disappearing entirely. Star favorites include Lea Michele’s top pick in Clarins Rouge Prodige Lipstick in Nude, while JLO’s always-perfect pout prefers Clinique’s Long Last Glosswear in Knockout Nude. Another popular hue that we saw plenty of during Fashion Week was ballerina pink. If you aren’t a fan of the nude lip, or have a smaller pout that you would like to accentuate, try a light pink that best compliments your skin tone. A couple of favorites include Dolce & Gabbana’s Cool Classic Pink or Dior Addict Lipstick in Sheer Bubblegum Pink. The downplay of the lip brings us to winter’s highlighted feature, the eyes. Played up eyes are making this seasons make-up looks fun and extremely versatile. From thick, rich mascaras (try Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara) to metallic creamy lids that pop with color, the look is smoky, bold and sexy. This season when smoking the eyes, line the bottom lid and finish with eye shadow below as well. The look is more dramatic and opens up the eye. Make-up artists this season aren’t just using black this year either, the trend of smoking eyes with rich browns and greys are becoming increasingly popular. Try Bobbi Brown’s Dark Ash Brown or Dark Grey to play with different color options. Ballerina pink isn’t just for the lips; the confectionary color is also showing up on eyelids. Balance is always key when using bright colors on the eyes. Keep the lips simple, this is where a light nude gloss would work to compliment and balance the more festive eye. Light brows are also a big trend, and though this look doesn’t work for every occasion, or everyone, it is a fun look to experiment with. To do so you will want to find a brow pencil that is a couple of shades lighter than your natural hair color, shape your brows and then fill in completely. For a more subtle look, opt for a light eye shadow. Remember in winter to keep the face matte with just a hint of highlight. Winter weather tends to dry our skin, so opt for a good moisturizer in favor of your dewy foundations, save those for spring. A complimentary blush is always a welcomed addition, unless the winter chill naturally gives you the coveted rosy pink cheeks, the skip the blush and go natural. For hair, this season is all about ease of style and no-fuss cuts. With all of our holiday shopping, work parties and social engagements, we women like to look and feel great without having to take hours, or paying a professional, to do so. It is more about how to simply style your chosen cut. If you opt for the newly revived bob trend, like the adorable Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting or the always-trendy Jennifer Lawrence, a little styling product goes a long way to give it personality. Opting for a side part can make the cut feel modern and sophisticated. Side parts are popular for all lengths, as are sweeping fringe bangs. Wearing your bangs long and swept to one side is an elegant look, as are the more voluminous bun styles that are a red carpet favorite now. To change up your look, opt for an occasional fishtail braid, a favorite of Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland. Not your average kiddie braid, the fishtail style is refined and grown-up. A glossy ponytail, high or low, is a look that can be worn casually or for cocktail hour. Jennifer Lopez is the queen of making this look effortless and chic. The beauty of the season lies in the simplicity of this years trends. A little goes a long way if you utilize the right products and respect what styles will and won’t work for you. Natural beauty is a foundation in which artists build upon, and this winter, the foundation is getting a chance to shine.
