Top 10 Fashion Films 2016

1. “The New Fragrance” by Spike Jonze for Kenzo

Directed by Spike Jonze, Kenzo’s latest film captures a night spent with actress and model Margaret Qualley. Once again, the Kenzo protagonist is portrayed not as a mere amalgamation of connoted ideals, instead Qualley’s movements are jarring, conflicting with the rest of the mise-en-scene as she shoots lazer beams from her finger tips and flies. Flooding the building with the dancehall sounds of Sam Spiegel, Ape Drums and Assassin, Kenzo chose not to attempt to translate the olfactory into the visual and the campaign is stronger for it. Neither sexually charged nor ostentatiously aspirational, the film is unusual for a perfume ad — which is perhaps why it is so successful as a fashion film.

2. “Wolves” by Steven Klein for Balmain

Doubling as the music video for Kanye West’s track “Wolves”, Balmain’s latest video campaign features West and Kim Kardashian-West alongside musical collaborators Sia and Vic Mensa — and a legion of recognisable faces, including Jourdan Dunn, Joan Smalls and Jon Kortajarena. Not shying away from the exuberance of the brand, the symbiosis of Olivier Rousteing’s physical creations and West’s music creates an impactful and entertaining experience. Directed by Steven Klein, the film bears resemblance to more conventional fashion films, but its freshness lies not in cementing some novel aesthetic vision but rather the synergy between two cultural brands. Reflected by its reach, with over 15 million views on Youtube, “Wolves” success springs from the film’s legitimacy as a standalone piece of entertainment.

3. “King Puppy” by William Strobeck for Supreme

The New York-based cult skater brand continues to hold steadfast to its roots, promoting the product in action through a high velocity edit of real skaters practicing their craft. The latest installment of Supreme’s skate videos, “King Puppy” opens to the old school sounds of East Coast hip-hop duo Gang Starr as a pitbull chews on a shoe with the skate team watching on. Sage Elsesser, a familiar face in the Supreme circles, ollies over the roots of a tree. Nike SB heavyweight Grant Taylor shows off his gravity-defying moves in the bowl. Directed by William Strobeck for the Supreme/Nike SB Blazer GT Collection, “King Puppy” is about the collaboration of the two brands, Nike and Supreme, but it’s also about the physical interaction between both brand’s skating teams — and nowhere does Supreme lose sight of that.

4. Gucci Autumn/Winter 2016 by Glen Luchford

Alessandro Michele is a master of overstimulation, and this season’s Gucci film is perfectly reflective of that. Directed by Glen Luchford, with creative direction from Michele and art direction by Christopher Simmonds, the video is a psychedelic experience shot in the urban metropolis of Tokyo. Transitioning from a calm teahouse to the pulsating streets of Shibuya, shot by shot Michele’s creations seamlessly blend into the background. Flashing lights engulf the models; bubbles fly across the screen; more than an interpretation of the clothes, the video becomes an extension of Gucci’s collection, while the use of subtitles in the film reflect a visual motif already present in the brand’s most recent print campaign.

5. “The Love with Which I Wash” by Harley Weir for Wales Bonner

Directed by Harley Weir, “The Love with Which I Wash” captures a journey through India, from Delhi to Junagadh. Challenging ideals of Western masculinity, the film places Wales Bonner’s unique vision of manhood in new context. Adorned in her garments, these anonymous faces supplant conventional images of the European machismo. Enriched by traditional images of India — laundry by the Ganges, glimmering dress in dance — Wales Bonner’s creations become animated under this new light. The photographer’s off-beat realism and her ability to find the romantic in the mundane, through unexpected camera shots and composition, elevate the video-journal into a memorable artistic endeavour.

6. “The Tale of Thomas Burberry” by Asif Kapadia for Burberry

Condensing 160 years into three and a half minutes, “The Tale of Thomas Burberry” reimagines an alternate timeline of the British fashion house’s history through the perspective of its founder. Directed by Academy Award-winner Asif Kapadia and starring the likes of Domhnall Gleeson and Sienna Miller, Burberry’s video is modelled after a Hollywood film trailer. The viewer is guided through a narrative of emotive vignettes, from the flight of the Burberry racer, to Shackleton’s ill-fated Artic-expedition and the trenches of the Great War. In an approach characteristically espoused by media conglomerates, Burberry’s film promotes no physical goods, but rather a vision and story for the consumer to experience — where the brand and the man come together.

7. “The Seven Deadly Sins of Edward Enninful” by Nick Knight for Showstudio and Beats

To honour the acclaimed stylist’s 25 years in fashion, SHOWStudio and Beats collaborate to exhibit “The Seven Deadly Sins of Edward Enninful.” Directed by Nick Knight, the film explores the seven biblical sins through seven audio-visual combinations. Premiering on the Beats billboard in Times Square, the experience is fittingly unreserved and maximalist. In thirteen thrilling minutes, the faces of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Karlie Kloss, amongst others, are all manipulated digitally, while the sounds of Future, Jamie XX, and Kaytranada fall in waves, crashing down on the visuals. Featuring garments by Céline, Vetements and Yohji Yamamoto, among others, Enninful’s genius is celebrated in an amalgamation of our two essential senses: sight and sound.

8. Alexander Wang Autumn/Winter 2016 by Director X

Shot by Director X, the #WANGF16 campaign chronicles the lavish lifestyle of a social set partying in a Beverly Hills mansion. Reminiscent of an early-2000’s rap video, the film stars the likes of Big Sean and Skrillex, alongside Zoë Kravitz, Kylie Jenner and Binx Walton. However, through dynamic camera movement, slow-motion effects and an impactful soundtrack, the film is never reliant upon its cast to maintain interest. With X reverting to his comfort zone as a music video director, the film is a celebration of the off duty cool-kid star-power that has become so associated with Wang’s brand in the last ten years.

9. Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2016 by Hype Williams

In another collaboration with a prolific music video director, Marc Jacobs taps into the expertise of Hype Williams this season, creating a dynamic moving portrait of the unique faces featured in Jacob’s beautifully strange campaign. As lights and sounds blend in front of a completely black background, the neon-lit video gives dynamism to the inherently static garments. More than a stale reinvention of still editorials, the film performs a function. Serving as a prequel to the campaign, we are introduced one by one to Jacob’s legion of campaign stars — coming face to face with the likes of Anna Cleveland, Cara Delevingne, and Marilyn Manson, the dispersed cultural figures that Jacobs believes represent both the era we live in and the brand he has built.

10. “Blah Blah Blah” by Rollo Jackson for Adidas Football

Unlike conventional athletic wear advertisements, which tend to be limited to praising the impact of sports-technology on athletic performance, Adidas Football’s “Blah Blah Blah” focuses not on the act of playing sport, but rather on the elements that draw sporting fans to the phenomenon in the first place. With a gaze upon the cultural context that informs the football community, Adidas’s film succeeds by connecting fans with the struggles of their idols. Combining animation with live-action, “Blah Blah Blah” is another example of the sporting world’s increasing investment and interest in the fashion film medium.

Interview with Melissa Barak

Simultaneously pursuing a dance career, running a studio and choreographing seems like an impossible task for any one person, but Melissa Barak of Barak Ballet is one of those girls who does it all.  With an impressive background full of dance awards and choreographic acclaim, she is changing the face of ballet in L.A.   Barak took time out of her hectic schedule to talk to us about her accomplishments, her challenges and how dancing in sunny Los Angeles differs from dancing in New York.

Your passion for dance has brought you to a few different avenues of expression:  dancing itself, choreographing and now running Barak Ballet.  Do you hold one love higher than the others?

While the directorship position feels the most true to who I am, I have to say, I love dancing the most.  Dancing brings about a special, very unique, feeling.  Moving to music and interpreting choreography is very spiritual in its own way, and it always brought me to a euphoric place.

You’ve danced extensively in New York and Los Angeles.  Do you think that dance is the same everywhere, or were there distinct struggles that came along with changing cities?

Dancing in L.A. was a bit easier for me for many reasons.  One, it’s my home.  Two, it’s simply a more pleasant place to live.  L.A. makes me feel calm and relaxed, whereas NYC is just constantly buzzing.  Some people love that about NYC, but for me, it didn’t work so well.  Leading a stressful ballet career, the last thing I needed was for my outside environment to be just as hectic.

You had your first major accomplishment as a choreographer at 22, when you became the youngest choreographer in New York City Ballet history to be commissioned for original work.  Do you think this was a big turning point in your career that led you deeper into choreography?

Actually no, it was quite the opposite.  I was so young, and I felt I had more to explore out of my dance career.  I didn’t want to focus on choreography just yet.  In fact, I chose to place focus on my dancing career right after that commission.  I found it difficult to juggle both careers simultaneously so it really had to be one or the other for me, and at age 22, it was dancing.

You have some memorable dance credits such as Fairy Carabosse from Sleeping Beauty and Coffee from the Nutcracker.  Is there one performance that you think of as your best?

There are quite a few performances that I think back on and feel a huge sense of pride and real artistic accomplishment.  Carabosse is definitely one of them.   Another was a performance of Marie I did (Sugarplum in most other versions) in Los Angeles Ballet’s, The Nutcracker.   It was just a really “on” show and it felt electric in every way.

Dance has a bit of a split reputation: on the one hand, it’s seen as a physically taxing sport that helps mold people at a young age, while on the other hand it’s seen as something potentially damaging to the health and emotional development of young girls (who presumably have to grow up too fast).  Do you have any thoughts on which you find to be truer, or any personal experiences to share?

I find that in life we see how things constantly balance out.  The higher the risk, the higher the reward, and vice versa.  There are many pay-offs to practicing ballet but it certainly comes with its fair share of drawbacks.  On one hand, it can be the best emotional and physical therapy, while at the same time ending up at the therapist.  My relationship with ballet was like being in a deep relationship with the absolute love of my life.  When things were good, life was grand, but when things were bad, it was painful in every way a person experiences pain.

What has been your biggest challenge in your dance career?

My biggest challenge was comparing myself to the other dancers. Instead of focusing on my attributes and my own journey.   I would get caught up in what others had, and what I lacked.  It was very self defeating and ended up hurting me for many years.

If you could accomplish one thing with Barak Ballet, what would it be?

It would be that when people think about going to see a dance performance, Barak Ballet immediately comes to mind because they know they are in for the best dance performance of their lives.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about dancers?

I feel the biggest misconception about dancers is that we are not intelligent.

How do you find inspiration for your choreography?

Music makes me want to move in the first place, however, I need to be surrounded by dancers that I know will fuel my creative imagination.  Their individuality, musicality and sex appeal helps my mind determine the physical form in which a piece of music will gradually shape into.

What can we hope to see from you in the coming seasons?

In the coming seasons you can expect to see plenty of exciting, fresh, and new modern ballets on various stages throughout Los Angeles and beyond.

Hayley Hasselhoff Interview

by Lisa Palencia

Known for her beauty, passion, and ambition in the film and modeling world, Hayley Hasselhoff is truly an inspiration and a role model.  We had the pleasure of interviewing Hasselhoff to talk about her career, ambitions and advice for those looking to follow in her grand and passionate footsteps.

Who is your biggest role model?

The people I meet everyday are my role models.  Whether it is someone I met in passing, from work, or a fan.  I love hearing their empowering stories.  The beauty of breaking away from the fear of the unknown and taking a chance on themselves for the better continuously inspires me.  I’ve been blessed to meet so many beautiful people in my journey who have shared their life lessons along the way.

How did you first get into acting and modeling?

I was blessed to see my family’s love and passion for their craft since I was born.  From then on I knew where my dreams lied.  I began acting on a few episodes of Baywatch when I was around 5 years old, but my father wanted me to take it seriously and be prepared before I got an agent.  Instead, I focused on school and being a teenager while taking private coaching before I got an agent at the age of 14.  It was not until I did an acting showcase where I felt it broke me into a different understanding of my craft.  Right after the showcase my first big audition ever was Huge and I booked a leading role as a series regular at the age of 17.  As for modeling, modeling was never an aspiration of mine.  When I was 14 years old my father’s publicist brought plus size modeling to his attention.  I took a meeting with Ford and got signed right away.  I became the spokes model for Torrid for a couple years.  I then took about 6 years off of modeling so I could focus all my attention on acting.  This past year I have gotten back into modeling and it has been such a beautiful journey that I’ll be forever thankful for.

Do you think it has been easier for you to grow up in a family that is in the entertainment industry, having that support system behind you?

I think no matter what opportunities are given to you the only way you will succeed is if you want it, fight for it and are prepared.  Thankfully I come from a family where I got to see the positive and negatives of the industry at a young age.  I realized that my passion for my craft and being on set is worth all the negativity that you can’t control in the public.  As for booking, I do believe it has actually been harder.  In the beginning, I felt like most of my auditions consisted of talking about my family or a tabloid that was false.  Then I’d have to pull myself together to get into the scene.  Thankfully, now that I’m older, I know how to deflect those conversations if need be for the sake of connecting with my character and not Hayley.  I think when it comes to certain aspects in the industry, it may be easier to open the door, but that door will close twice as fast and hard if you are not prepared.  I have and always will want to make sure that my successes have been made from my own talent and path.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome to get to where you are today?

Wow!  Well I do feel like there have been more than a few.  There was about a year after Huge got cancelled where I was so focused on getting another role.  Every audition I felt like I was getting close, but then was told “you’re too pretty to play the quirky best friend but not skinny enough to play the cheerleader type.”  I began to let those assumptions get to my head.  The best thing at that time that could have happened to me was where I let all that go as I went into every audition room to do good work and not worry about the small stuff.  I look at this as an obstacle since it was a time where my weight started to hinder my thoughts of being able to work.  Now I look at where I am today, with a beautiful career all about celebrating my body.  I would have never gotten here if I let others words of discouragement get to me.  I now walk into every audition room just to do good work and have fun with the reader.  If a role presents itself to change in any way, trust me I’ll be the first to want to.  But until then I’m going to be confident in me and the work I bring to a role.

What is one goal you wish to accomplish in the near future?

I wish to venture back into the acting field some more.  I hope to either be back on a television series or continue on into feature films.

If you had not chosen a career in acting and modeling, what career path would you have chosen?

I would have definitely gone into the fashion Industry.  I was looking into going to a fashion design school after I graduated high school, which I did at 16.  However, work took me away from it.  I have revisited taking classes many times.  Although acting and modeling is the main career path I have chosen at the moment, I hope in my near future fashion design will be something I break into.

What is the most important thing to you, as far as being a role model, for young aspiring actors and models?

Gosh!  As for being a role model, I never chose or thought of myself as one to be exact.  I don’t think I like the idea of someone looking up to my career journey as something they must do to succeed.  If anything, I would encourage young girls, aspiring actresses, and models to find their journey, to follow their heart and never lose sight of who they are.  Being unique and being yourself is going to get you and your career way further in life, no matter what anyone else tells you.  Be you, work hard, and never lose sight of the love for your craft that got you into this business.

What is the most important thing you learned from working as a plus-sized model?

Being a plus-size model is all about being healthy, toned and exuding confidence.  It shows you that beauty comes in all different shapes and sizes.

Do you have any advice for females looking to get into the industry who are trying to adhere to the standards of modeling and acting?

Be you, but be the best you!  You can be for yourself not anyone else.  Have a great work ethic, love every second of the process and you will succeed.  It doesn’t happen overnight.  Trust me, you are getting into an industry that will take you on ups and downs for the rest of your life.  But the continued ‘rejection’, as one may call it, is actually a blessing in disguise.  If you look at it the right way it can only help you get one step closer to where you are supposed to be.  It will also help you realize what you need to work on to get better.

What has been your most embarrassing moment on set?

I can’t really think of one that has happened as me ‘Hayley’ on set ha!  I think it’s probably because things that may seem embarrassing to one are just quite funny to me.  There was that one scene on the set of Huge that I had to shoot that could have been embarrassing.  On the second day of shooting, the first episode of the series, my character, Amber, has to climb a wall in fitness training where her shorts rip and everyone sees her underwear.  It was funny to know everyone was staring at my bum for a couple hours.  Haha!

What can you tell your fans about upcoming projects you are doing this year?

There are many projects in the works for release in 2015 but unfortunately cannot be talked about just yet.  I can tell you that I have a film called Fearless set to release in 2015.  I’ve also got some amazing projects in fashion and modeling on the way.  Follow

Introducing the 2017 NU MUSES

treats! Magazine Founder Steve Shaw and Celebrated Photographer David Bellemere Present the Final 12 NU MUSES For the First Ever NU MUSES 2017 Fine Art Calendar

“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment”

-Michelangelo

Following weeks of judging and casting, and after receiving thousands of submissions from around the world, Steve Shaw and David Bellemare are pleased to introduce the final 12 NU MUSES for the first ever NU MUSES 2017 fine art calendar.  NU MUSES will be a millennial take of the classic Pirelli calendar of the 1970’s but reimagined as something artistic, classic and inspirational. NU MUSES aims to redefine how society perceives nudity, reestablishing nudity as something of natural timeless beauty to be celebrated in an elegant and sophisticated way. Over the last few months candidates from around the world have submitted photos and videos in the hopes of becoming one of the final 12 NU MUSES and following a top 100 selection, a round of social media voting and a final the 30 selection, the judges and Creative Director Christianne Brooks, have now made their decision and are introducing the final 2017 NU MUSES – http://numuses.com/site/finalists_dev

After receiving global submissions from the Philippines, to India, Brazil, and Mexico, the judges and creative director, evaluated the models assessing them on three categories; their unique look and beauty, social media voting allowing people to vote on their favorites, and most importantly their inspiring personality and views towards nudity. The response from the models was outstanding and although the original plan was to announce to a top 20, the submissions were so incredible that both Shaw and Bellemere felt a top 30 was required. The final 30 were then part of a final casting in Los Angeles and New York City where famed French photographer, David Bellemere photographed the remaining models to truly discover which models epitomized the qualities of a NU MUSE – confidence, inspiration, and comfort in the nude form.

After thorough evaluation we are proud to announce the final 12 beautiful, talented, and inspirational NU MUSES.

1. Jessica Clements from Elite Models “I look at timeless beauty as something that is more just a pretty face or a nice body. It is something within the soul, and you can never truly be beautiful if you do not do beautiful things. I try to live by that as much as I can.” @jessmclements

2. Nidhi Sunil from Industry Models “I feel timelessly beautiful, not because I consider myself as a separate entity more beautiful in contrast to some perceived ordinariness around me, but because I feel connected and see beauty in everything around me.” @nidhisunil

3. Rachel Cook from LA Models “I am so excited to say that I am one of the 12 NU MUSES! I am really looking forward to shooting with David (Bellemere) again. Nude photography is an art and it can be so empowering and I hope that through this project we are able to show you guys that.”   @rachelc00k

4. Ebonee Davis from MC2 “I’m a timeless beauty because I transcend any age, race or time. I give people what’s real and that level of humanity can’t be limited by time. I give people a feeling, and feelings last forever. Even when memories fade.” @eboneedavis

5. Janine Tugonon from MSA Los Angeles “I flew to the US from Philippines with a DREAM. I wanted to AIM HIGHER. to be globally known and excellent in this industry (modeling and acting). Being in this calendar is a huge opportunity to showcase my beauty and personality, a great exposure for me and hopefully will be the beginning of a long lasting successful career in this field I’m very passionate about.” @tugononjanine

6. Isabelle Boemeke from Muse Models. What does nudity mean to you?

“It means not being able to hide behind your ego, or theatrics. It is you, like you came to the world, pure and natural.” @isabelleboemeke

7. Alejandra Guilmant from Photogenics “No one is timeless, that’s the beauty of photography and art; they make beauty timeless.” @aleguilman

8. Vika Levina from Women 360 “I always wanted to inspire people, it’s the biggest award I believe. I think David (Bellemere) see women as muses, every woman he worked with he presents differently, shows her special beauty. It would be an honor to work with David.” @levina_viktoriya

9. Anna Wolf from Wilhelmina Models lives in NYC but is originally from North Carolina. “When I was little my nickname was Noodle because long and thin like a noodle and eventually that shortened to Noodie. When people heard my mom calling me that they thought she was saying “nudie” and now I am representing as a “nudie.” Haha” @anna_wolf3

10. Sabina Karlsson from JAG Models “I’d like to show that being nude is a form of art, and that being nude as a curvy woman with thighs and hips is as beautiful as any other body type. You own your body and should be proud of it – it’s unique.” @thesabinakarlsso

11. Keilani Asmus from Wilhelmina Models shares what viewpoint she would like to change with this nude calendar, “I want to beg the question as to why shame is associated with my body. I want people to question why they are against nudity in the first place. I’m hoping to help normalize the body, rather than build it up as this taboo thing that should be hidden behind closed doors.”

@keilanimalia

12. Ariela Oliviera from New York Models shares a message she wants to send to women by appearing in NU MUSES, “Always feel and look confident, strong, sensual, positive and elegant with your perfect body shape… your beauty will shine from within.” @ariela_o

The 2017 NU MUSES are all uniquely beautiful both inside and out. The diversity of each model doesn’t only lie in their looks, but also their passions and reasons for wanting to be a NU MUSE model.  Speaking about the response and submissions Creative Director Christianne Brooks said: “We were so blown away by the magnitude of support for this project. We have had over 130 million online and social media impressions, each candidate’s social effort, was truly awe inspiring and shows us how poignant and timely this conversation around true beauty and nudity is. It’s such a wonderful time for women and we hope to empower these women and others to celebrate the female form in a sophisticated, elegant and most natural way. Nudity is one of the oldest and classic forms of art and we aim, through NU MUSES, to help reestablish that.”

The NU MUSES 2017 calendar shoot will take place from October 16th-25th. Each NU MUSE will be flown to the Dominican Republic to shoot with David Bellemere at the beautiful Casa Kimball, a private villa located on the north coast of the island. This breathtaking setting with the Caribbean sunlight, coco palms and almond trees, a infinity edge swimming pool, and uninterrupted 180 degree Atlantic ocean views will provide a truly tropical and natural paradise to capture images that will truly reflect the NU MUSES movement. Keisha Castle Hughes – Game of Thrones

Who is your favorite fashion designer?

I am hugely bias to New Zealand designers. We are spoilt for choice and the fabrics are beautiful. I love: RUBY, Stolen Girlfriends Club, twentysevennames, Miss Crabb, Kate Sylvester and Juliette Hogan.

What is your favorite food?

I am a massive foodie. Anything fresh, organic and locally sourced. I love seafood. I could eat fresh oysters everyday of the week.

What is your favorite song on the radio right now?

Adele just dropped her new tune ‘hello’ and it is phenomenal!

Tell us about your favorite shoes?

I own far too many pairs of ankle boots. They are my staple piece with every outfit and can be worn causally or more formal.

Tell us about your personal style, any signature pieces?

My go to pieces are always good underwear and a good pair of ankle boots. I build on an outfit from there. I dress dependent on how I am feeling and often change outfits two to three times a day. I have always been this way because often what I choose in the morning is no longer reflective of how I’m feeling in the afternoon. Also, the weather in Auckland where I hail from is insane. There are always four seasons in a day so it is habit.

What is your favorite movie?

I have so many, it is always difficult to choose one! Once Upon a time in the West is certainly one of my favorite films and I am currently about to direct my first film, which is a Western, so am feeling very influenced by that film as of late.

Do you know any god Game of Thrones Gossip?

No. They’d have my head!

Tell us about your most memorable day on the set.

My first day was so nerve-wracking and exciting. I am such a huge fan of the show so was just blown away by the fact that I was there. The cast and crew were so welcoming of us and I am so happy to be apart of such an epic show.

Any words of wisdom for the RUNWAY readers?

Make sure you like you first and foremost, the rest will fall into place. Eat a balanced diet. Laugh with loved ones. Smile and try not to be an asshole.
