BEST PARIS RUNWAY SHOWS EVER

Each fashion season brings its fair share of dramatic moments on the catwalk. And although Paris Fashion Weekis long gone, now is as good a time as any to reflect on the fashion past. We went back to our memory banks to come up with the list before you, which marks some of the most iconic runways of all time. There was much debate, and many worthy collections didn’t make the cut, but we think the final ranking demonstrates the best moments and the most unexpected collections. Enjoy!

1973: The Beginning Of Everything

In the now-legendary catwalk fash-off of 1973, it was the kings of French chic (Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy et al) versus the new names from New York (Oscar de la Renta, Halston and Anne Klein). At stake? The designers’ pride, but also a joint goal to raise money to restore the palace to its former glory.

1992: Madonna Goes Topless For Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier created Madonna’s infamous ‘cone bra’ for her Blonde Ambition world tour in 1990. So, where do you go from there? Well, Madge ditched the bra and proudly walked au natural down Gaultier’s runway in 1992.

2010: Horses At Hermès

Jean Paul Gaultier spent seven years at the helm of Hermès and so, to celebrate his departure, he staged a stampede. Leather capes, equestrian boots and hats from the Seville riding school formed the look and the show was set in an authentic riding arena, complete with chandeliers. Now that’s what we call an exit.

2013: Marc Jacobs’ Louis Vuitton Swansong

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Marc Jacobs bid au revoir to Louis Vuitton back in 2013, 16 years after he took to the helm. To ‘celebrate’ he re-purposed parts from his archive of spectacular sets, but painted them all black to match his sombre showgirl collection.

2014: Supermarket Chic At Chanel

Never one to do things by halves, Karl Lagerfeld turned his catwalk into an actual supermarket for Chanel’s AW14 show. This time around Karl Lagerfeld turned the mundane, everyday errand into an epic fashion show this morning at the Grand Palais, where he staged an entire supermarket called “Chanel Shopping Center”.

2015: Karl Lagerfeld’s New Look For Chanel: Fashion Manifesto

For the Chanel catwalk show, the Grand Palais was transformed – elaborately (an adjective almost universally applicable to Lagerfeld’s actions) – into a re-creation of a Paris boulevard. At ground level, the scene was set for another typical aspect of French streetlife, the manifestation. In place of Chanel’s typically lavish seating were rows of benches divided by stainless steel guard rails. One of the placards on the catwalk, however, was painted in support of He For She, Emma Watson’s campaign for men and women to understand and support the principles of gender equality.

2016: In Serene Garden, Lagerfeld Fetes Nature For Chanel

Known for his extravagant runway settings, designer Karl Lagerfeld led fashionistas into a serene garden at the Chanel haute couture catwalk show in Paris. The designer sent models out of a wooden house down a garden path across a neat green lawn. Lagerfeld’s nature theme was evident in the embroidery on dresses, including colorful flowers and wooden birds as well as in the shoes: rounded cork wedges.

Fashion World Mourns Prince

Prince wasn’t someone many people said no to. The model Naomi Campbell was apparently one who did.

“I was 17 years old when I met him,” Ms. Campbell said on Thursday, the day of Prince’s death. “I was with Azzedine Alaïa and Jean-Baptiste Mondino in Paris, and I remember Prince said to me not to wear high heels, and I wore the highest heels I could find. Because it went with Azzedine’s outfit.”

But the two soon became fast friends, and she was often a fixture at his concerts no matter where (or, more notably, when) Prince decided to play.

“He used to call me every time he came to London or Paris,” Ms. Campbell said. “It would be 2 o’clock in the morning and he’d say, ‘I’m going to play’ and I would go out in my pajamas. That was it. He was impromptu. The last time I saw Amy Winehouse was when she performed with Prince. They sang one of her songs and one of his. They were a powerhouse, the two of them. He loved talent.”

For many in the fashion world, the film and album “Purple Rain” became their gateway to a lifelong connection to Prince, as both a performer and role model.

“I saw it three times in three days,” said the photographer Bruce Weber. “It was just like ‘wow.’ Only he could make this wonderful movie that was kind of about nothing and yet was about everything. Part of what I also loved was that not only did he do great music but he was smaller than the other musicians and he always got the girl. You felt like the biggest, tallest guy even though he wore high heels because he was so short.”

George Cortina, one of the industry’s best-known stylists, said: “I’d just gotten out of rehab when I first heard ‘Purple Rain.’ I couldn’t believe that album. It was the most brilliant thing I ever heard.”

Edward Enninful, the creative and fashion director of W, can still remember what it was like when he found out about Prince. He was a gay kid in London when his older brother came home to their mother’s flat and pulled out a copy of “Dirty Mind,” the singer’s 1980 album that featured a black and white image of the Minneapolis singer wearing an open studded trench coat that amply displayed his bare-torsoed, androgynous glory.

“I’d never seen anything like it in my life,” Mr. Enninful said. “Someone so blatantly challenging the ideas of race and gender and sexuality. In a way, it was comparable to David Bowie, except that Prince brought that to the black community.”

There’d been hints of that before with Teddy Pendergrass and Rick James, as well as Sylvester and Little Richard. But the remix seemed entirely new with Prince, and Mr. Enninful worshiped at his altar, loving his ruffled shirts with the Edwardian collars and black matador outfits with the crazy crop tops.

In time there were comparisons to another great superstar of his time: Michael Jackson. But Prince was different. Adept not just as a singer, guitarist, keyboard player and dancer, he was also virtually unmatched in his ability to destabilize people both privately and publicly.

Where Mr. Jackson used songs like “Bad” and “Billie Jean” to shed his androgyny and sexual ambiguity, Prince reveled in them, singing, “Am I black or white/Am I straight or gay.”

“I always saw it like Prince was the bad brother and Michael was the good brother,” Mr. Enninful said. “He was pop, with clean lyrics. Prince was not scared. The first time I heard someone sing about AIDS it was Prince: ‘In France, a skinny man died of a big disease with a little name.’ He was not afraid of taboos.”

That fearlessness extended to his costumes, which were further exercises in contradiction and gender ambiguity. He rocked heavily embellished four-inch heels but his shirts were open to the navel, showing off his chest hair.

“He wore the most incredible opulent fabrics and the boots were always made to match,” said Mary Kay Stolz, who worked on the singer’s costumes for the tour of “Purple Rain.” “International Silks and Woolens, the best fabric store in L.A., would stay open late for me because I would fly in late from Minneapolis just to get fabric and turn around.”

Mystery was an essential component of his persona. There was an aura of secrecy about him even among the people who wound up in close proximity to him.

“He didn’t make a lot of eye contact and I did sign a 365-page, nondisclosure before I left,” Ms. Stolz said. “When I was there, the bodyguards said to people, ‘Don’t talk to Prince unless he talks to you.’ It wasn’t like, ‘Hey Prince.’ It’s not like anything was really conveyed, although he liked what he liked. I would leave the clothes at night and he would try them and if he liked them they wouldn’t be there anymore. He was in his musical world and that was it.”

Invariably, the fashion world claimed him as one of their own.

Designers like Donatella Versace hired him to play at their shows, including in 2011, when Prince performed along with Nicki Minaj at an opening night party in New York for a collaboration between Versace and H & M.

By this point Prince was not so much the sartorial maverick he’d once been as the Las Vegas version of himself, playing guitar in a pair of black ovular shades and decked out in a tight red suit.

Among those in attendance was the designer Joseph Altuzarra.

“I remember how epic the performance was,” he said. “I think more than anyone, really, Prince felt like he was above it all — just such a legend, a living legend.”

Mr. Altuzarra recently channeled Prince’s style for his fall 2015 collection of ruffled lace blouses, one he said had been inspired in part by what he called the singer’s neo-Victorian period in the 1980s. “There’s always something that he wore that I think is really fascinating, and I tend to really love looking at musicians’ wardrobes for inspiration. I’ve definitely looked at his style pictures.”

Ms. Versace, who did get to know Prince over the years, found a lack of pretension beneath the surface. “One of the last conversations I had with Prince was about coming to my show,” she said in statement. “He said to me: ‘Let’s have no celebrities in the first row, no V.I.P.s. Let’s have the smart and real people who do what they think is right and put all their energy to make our world better and don’t get the attention they deserve.’”

“I am crying,” she added. “All my memories are coming back to me. He was one of my closest friends.”

Jason Wu star-studded wedding with longtime partner

Taiwanese-born fashion darling Jason Wu wedded longtime partner, Gustavo Rangel, at a beachside wedding in Tulum, Mexico, on Friday.

Wu, 33, is perhaps best known for designing U.S first lady Michelle Obama’s gowns during the first and second inauguration of President Barack Obama. He is also the go-to couturier of choice of the Republic of China’s first Lady, Christine Chow.

Rangel is the chief financial officer of Wu’s eponymous label.

Celebrity guests included actress and Wu’s best friend Diane Kruger, PR guru Melvin Chua, jewellery designer Jennifer Fisher, fashion blogger Bryanboy, and art director Sofia Sanchez de Betak, reported Women’s Wear Daily.

According to Taiwan’s Apple Daily, Wu’s mother Chen Mei-yun did not attend the event. The family declined to comment about the wedding.

Judging from the pics posted on Instagram by the happy couple’s guests, the wedding was an affair to remember.

A video posted by stylist Anya Ziourova showed the newlyweds cutting their wedding cake.

Both Wu and Rangel looked overjoyed, especially the former who seemed unsteady on his feet from too much alcohol. Well, it’s his party and he can do what he wants.

JOHNNY DEPP AND THE HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES TOUR DATES

Johnny Depp fans rejoice! The Hollywood Vampires just announced their 2016 summer tour. And, as Alice Cooper recently told Rolling Stone, it wasn’t easy.

“That’s because yave Johnny’s movie schedule; you’ve got Aerosmith, you’ve got Guns N’ Roses and you’ve got me! It’s five entities going in five different directions. To get those guys all at one time when we’re not working is really unique. So everybody looks at their calendar, and you have to find that two weeks where everybody’s off.”

In case you’re counting, this is the superstar rock band’s first U.S. concert lineup of the year. They announced three show locations following their recent Grammy Award’s tribute to Lemmy Kilmister. Since then, six more show dates have been added. Will there be more? Only time will tell.

As of this writing, you can see Johnny Depp and the rest of the Hollywood Vampires in:

  • Lisboa, Portugal @ Rock in Rio – May 27
  • Stockholm, Sweden @ Grona Lund – May 30
  • Horsens, Denmark @ The Prison – June 1
  • Bucharest, Romania @ Romexpo Parc C – June 6
  • Atlantic City, NJ @ Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa – July 3
  • Milwaukee, WI @ Summerfest -July 5
  • Mount Pleasant, MI @ Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort – July 13
  • Cadott, WI @ RockFest 2016 – July 14-16
  • Paso Robles, CA @ California Mid-State Fair – July 25

If you want to be extra prepared, take a minute or two to stop by the official Hollywood Vampires website and snag a t-shirt or join the mailing list.

As reported in a separate Rolling Stone piece, Johnny Depp met Alice Cooper on the set of Depp’s 2012 film Dark Shadows. Depending on how well you know Johnny Depp, you may or may not realize he has quite an elaborate guitar collection and a recording studio in his home. Rock on, Captain Jack Sparrow!

After the two men met, they started discussing the idea of doing a cover album of sorts. Everyone agreed it was a good way for the rest of the band members to fool around in Depp’s well-equipped studio.

Last September, the Hollywood Vampires released their debut album, which was very well received. Covers included tracks from musical greats such as The Who, Led Zeppelin, Plastic Ono band, and T. Rex, just to name a few.

Several guest musicians contributed to the album as well. Brian Johnson, Slash, Paul McCartney, and Dave Grohl rocked the studio in an effort to make the album the best it could be.

The Quietus explains to readers that Alice Cooper co-founded the original Hollywood Vampires in the 70s. Believe it or not, the idea for the band started out as a “last man standing” boy’s drinking club. Members included Cooper, Bernie Taupin, Keith Moon, Mickey Dolenz, and Harry Nilsson. Both John Lennon and Ringo Starr were known to join the party on occasion.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, rumors surfaced last October in regard to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard splitting up over his association with the band. But the talk amounted to rumors and nothing more.

Are you familiar with Johnny Depp’s participation in the Hollywood Vampires band? If so,what do you like best about the group, and are you planning on purchasing tickets to one of their shows? Feel free to leave your comments below.

What is next from JOHNNY DEPP AND THE HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES ?

Best Summer and Spring Shoe Styles for Men

Spring is in the air and summer is on the way. That means that it’s time to slip into some stylish new shoes. Whether you’re looking for some fresh kicks to rock on the street or need something with a more casual vibe for that upcoming beach trip, there’s plenty to take advantage of for the new year. These are a few of the upcoming footwear fashions that we recommend stepping into for the new season.

Slide Into Summer

It might seem obvious for summer but sandals are back in a big way. Specifically, slides are very much in vogue for 2016 with plenty of designers offering their own spins on the classic sandals. Complex reports one major trend, and we can’t believe we’re saying this, is rocking socks with slides for the spring and summer. Just don’t think about pairing them with your old Tevas or Birkenstocks, the look can only be taken so far. Designers including Ferragamo, Gucci, Joshua Sanders and Valentino have all provided their own takes on the summer staple and you owe it to yourself to splurge on a pair of nice slides before the heat of the summer kicks in.

Strap In This Spring

One of the biggest style trends for spring and summer is the eschewing of laces from your shoes. According to Fashion Beans, strap closures and Velcro are the way to go, particularly when it comes to sneakers. Not only are straps simple and convenient, they’re also officially cool as well as perfect for a casual pair of trainers in the spring of summer.

High-Tops Mean High Fashion

No longer the purview of just ballers and hipsters, the high-top is now haute couture for those looking to make a bold statement with their shoes. High-tops have pretty much always been cool, but it’s much more than just Nikes and Jordans these days. The streetwise style now finds itself under the auspices of some of the most prominent designers and fashion houses. The kicks have become a go-to shoe for fashion designers with Footwear News reporting that Laurence Dacade is offering his own take in his new collection in addition to other prominent names like Jimmy Choo also getting in on the game.

Do It Up With Dress Boots

One of the biggest recent shoe trends has been the popularity of dress boots and that’s going to continue to remain true for 2016. Dress boots are perfect for just about any occasion from complementing a pair of jeans while you’re out on the town to pairing well with a sharp suit for your next business meeting. There are loads of styles available for the versatile boot with the collections at Lyst, providing plenty of inspiration from modern Chelsea boots to classics like the Clarks desert boot. A pair of Clarks might be the single best boot you can ask for in the summer; they were designed for use in the desert after all. Go for the suede option for an iconic look that checks off two 2016 trends in one boot.
