PAULA ABDUL

Paula’s first CD back in 1989, “Forever Your Girl” had four astonishing number one singles, spurring what would eventually become multiple releases and over 60 million records sold worldwide. Soon to follow was a Grammy award, seven MTV video awards, two Emmy awards and two People’s Choice awards.

Almost 20 years later, fans welcomed Paula into their living rooms each week as the loveable judge on Fox’s American Idol. Her talented wings even crossed over to the fashion world when she launched her lifestyle line called “Forever Your Girl” for the Home Shopping Network, and The Paula Abdul Jewelry Collection for QVC.

We caught up with Paula in Los Angeles to kick off the New Year and discuss her latest goals.

ABC Scandal SUSAN POURFAR talks New Years Resolutions

RUNWAY: Wow! What a shocker in the mid-season finale of Scandal! How did you land the role of Becky Flynn on the series? Were you a fan of the show before being cast?

SUSAN: I was a huge fan of the show! I was doing a play with Jeff Perry (Cyrus, White House Chief of Staff) when Season One aired; the cast of the play would gather to watch episodes of SCANDAL on Thursday nights. Of course, we all became completely hooked.

When the cast of SCANDAL came to see Jeff in the play we were doing, they were all so kind and effusive afterwards; I imagined the set of SCANDAL must be an incredible environment. I had no idea I’d see them again, let alone work beside the beautiful and talented Guillermo Diaz.

Linda Lowy is fully responsible for my audition. She is the casting director of SCANDAL. When Linda read the role of Becky, she reached out and said there was a role I should put myself on tape for. The rest is a sweet mystery! Needless to say, I am beyond grateful.

RUNWAY: With the big reveal occurring in last night’s episode, were you surprised at all or did you expect Becky to be that evil?

SUSAN: Utter surprise. Total shock.

RUNWAY: Do you enjoy playing the ‘bad guy’ or do you prefer ‘nicer’ roles?

SUSAN: I love playing any role where the character has a sense of agency and is empowered. Whether she uses her power for good or for evil is up to the particular storyline, but as an actor, being an active participant in a character’s destiny — an active player rather than a passive victim — that is thrilling!

RUNWAY: Now let’s talk a bit more fashion. With Scandal set in the world of politicians, the fashion is pretty conservative. How would you describe your personal style?

SUSAN: I love my style on SCANDAL. I love how the designers see Becky. She is, in some ways, a mirror image of Huck, in that she’s an outsider; she lives outside the clean-cut, conservative world of DC politics. Becky’s style includes a lot of Frye boots, fitted jeans, black jackets (her fashion sense is practical and tough yet sexy)!

RUNWAY: We noticed that you worked in the New York theater world a lot in the last year. Now, with Scandal filming in Los Angeles, you must be traveling a lot. When traveling, what are your beauty and fashion must haves? What is the one item you can’t live without?

SUSAN: Oh, one of my closest friends, an actress, told me she always travels with a 2-oz Evian spritzer; she keeps it handy to hydrate her face during flights. The make-up artists on SCANDAL gave me the same tip. The last flight I took, I think I sprayed the person in the seat next to me more than a few times.

Other than that: a travel-size Malin and Goetz face moisturizer.

RUNWAY: With awards season approaching- if you could wear any designer to the Academy Awards one day, what would your dream dress be? Who are your favorite designers?

SUSAN: First of all, I’d raid Olivia Pope’s (Kerry Washington’s characters) closet! That woman gives good fashion. To be fair, nobody wears a dress like Kerry Washington.

One of my favorite designers is, hands-down, Nanette Lepore. I ran into her once on Hudson Street, while I was hailing a cab, wearing one of her dresses. That was a fashion highlight of my life!

A dream to one day work with: Marc Jacobs. He seems always to suit the dress to the individual. And it’s always beautiful.

RUNWAY: As we are almost in 2013, we have to ask, do you have any New Year’s resolutions in mind? What is next for you?

SUSAN: Oh! I resolve to keep reading real books, no matter how many gadgets I own! How boring is that?!

Learn my way around the East Side of LA … and take lots of hikes here.

Career wise, I am learning to appreciate the unfolding; I hope the unfolding will include more Becky and Huck.

I love that Guillermo Diaz.

You can see Susan in ABC Scandal when episodes return in January.

Making Your Necklace Work For You

It’s overwhelming enough walking into a jewelry store and having eyes that are immediately drawn to every sparkly piece. However, with the statement necklace trend taking the red carpet (and my closet) by storm, picking the right necklace is somewhat of a tricky task, that can easily be the make or break of a successful outfit. While it might be okay to mix reds and oranges and a necklace with spikes for a coffee date with the girls, it’s probably not the best outfit for the workplace. Follow these words of wisdom to successfully pull off any piece and make sure your look makes the statement you want it too.

Make sure other jewelry is kept to a minimum. Log onto any style blog by trendsetter’s such as Lauren Conrad (LC) and the first piece of advice they give is that beauty is in the details. Because statement necklaces have such intricate details like their color patterns, or shape of the necklace, they could easily be overwhelmed with other jewelry such as dangling earrings. Therefore, to keep your look edgy but classy, keep other accessories to a minimum and if earrings and bracelets are a must-use simple posts and one or two thin bands. Also, keep in mind accessories do not have to necessary be jewelry. Maybe try pairing a statement necklace with a ruffled top or a thick belt for added style.

Make your own. Although the statement necklace trend has been around for a while, stars are now experimenting with different types of necklaces that vary in length, size, and color. What better way to show off your sense of style than by making your own? Pin a few old brooches onto a chain to create your own statement necklace.

Experiment with contrasts. While neon colors are definitely in, to avoid looking unprofessional and not put together, avoid contrasts that are in the same color palette. How do you avoid this? Well, for example, jeans look great with neon necklaces, solids look better with multi-colored necklaces, and basic black just screams ‘art-deco.’ And if you must pair bright orange with a red v-neck, make sure the rest of your outfit is very neutral. Like black jeans and black riding boots neutral.

Experiment with length. The nice thing about statement necklaces is that they come in a variety of different lengths- making it really easy to wear them with a variety of different outfits; those with high necklines and those with lower ones. To make sure your necklace compliments your look rather than draws attention away from your face, keep this rule of thumb in mind. If wearing a high neckline, make sure the color of the fabric contrasts (see above paragraph for rule on contrast) with the color of the necklace. With a low neckline, make sure the jewelry fits the shape of the neckline (if wearing a v-neck make sure the necklace has a “v” shape to it) and balances out the rest of your waistline. Also, if wearing an open neckline, make sure the necklace has detail and texture. Conversely, if wearing a colored blouse, make sure the necklace fits right underneath the color and peeks out just a little.

As long as they are paired with simple and sleek outfits, statement necklaces can truly turn any ordinary outfit into a direct personality statement, giving the wearer a unique style. What statement will you make?

Decking Your Face with Trendy Makeup

Under-Liner: Wearing under-liner was big in 2011, but in 2012 we’re revamping this style. Instead of simply lining the under eye, try extending the line to the end of the eyebrow. Also, stars like Rihanna have been using unexpected colors, like pink, green, yellow, and gold to take this look to the next level. Layering this with under eye shadow can also be a fun way to dramatize this look and create a unique twist. It’s all about being retro with this trend.

Bold Lips: In 2011 it was orange, but this year the classic red look is back, not that it really ever went away, but you might not recognize the shade it has resurrected in: ox-blood. Stars have been using this vampire like color, as well as wine colored, blood colored, and even burgundy inspired lipsticks to dramatize their lips this winter. Try using clear lip-stain to add extra contour and get the “Rosie Huntington-Wheatley” pout.

Bright Eyes: Colors like bright cobalt blue, gold, mint green, and purple have appeared on the eye lids of our favorite starlets making it clear, this year is not about playing it safe. Experiment with bright colors, even using it as an under eye-liner for an extra burst of color. Just make sure the outfit stays put together by using the more classic brown and black mascara. (We hear colored mascara is making a comeback though…)

Cheeks: In winter it is inevitable to have cheeks that are a little reddened from the cold, and this year rather than fight- we’re embracing it. (About time!) Use bronzer to add a bit of contour to the face, using it in vertical swipes starting at the temple and moving down towards the cheekbone and also on the sides of your nose, and pair this with a bright pink blush right on the apples of your cheeks, using more than you might normally. Keep the rest of your look simple for a sure fire way to stand out in a crowd.

Carmen and Camille Premiere – IDGAF

We were fortunate enough to catch up with the girls to discuss their new music and personal style. As an extra bonus, Carmen & Camille shared a link with us to their “IDGAF” music video. Check it out below!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfZunBi41Ag&feature=youtu.be

Carmen & Camille are back!! We love your new single “IDGAF.” How did you come up with such a catchy song?

Carmen: We wanted our first single to be something that was not only catchy and fun but a song that really expresses how we’re feeling. We feel happier, stronger, and more inspired than ever before. This song is our way of saying, hey, we like who we are and we aren’t going to worry about what anyone else thinks.

Camille: The song is set in more of a party setting but for us the message is bigger than just one night.

What was your favorite part of making the music video for “IDGAF”?

Carmen: My favorite part was probably the spin the bottle. I hadn’t played that game in ages and that was all real, just us having fun with each other being silly.

Camille:
My favorite part was the night dancing scene, it was the end of a long day in the dessert with no air conditioning and it had finally cooled off a bit.

As singers and songwriters, what is one thing you want your fans to take away from your music?

As singers and songwriters we want our fans to take away so many things. We want our music to inspire, heal, empower… make people feel all the things that music we love does for us. If someone feels moved by something we have put our heart into that’s what we’re doing this for and is what gives us purpose.

Here at RUNWAY we LOVE fashion, tell us about your personal style? As twins, do you find your style is similar or different?

Camille: Our style does differ. I’d say I am more of the edgier one, I like mixing grungy with girly pieces. I change my hair a lot. I get bored easily. Carmen is more girly, with a bit more of a retro boho vibe.

If you only had one pair of shoes, what would they be? Why?

Carmen: Right now my obsession is platform black Mary Jane’s so I think I’ll go with that. Though they are completely impractical for every day haha.
Camille: I’d have to say a pair combat boots, they’re definitely my go to.

If you could spend a day shopping with one celebrity, who would it be?

Carmen: Definitely Gwen Stefani… we both love her style. Camille’s more No Doubt Gwen and I’m more solo career Gwen. But I’d love to meet her and see how her mind works when it comes to fashion and hopefully she’d hook us up with a bunch of L.A.M.B. 😉

Stella McCartney wins Designer of the Year at the 2012 British Fashion Awards

The British Fashion Awards gave Stella McCartney two honors this year– Designer Brand and Designer of the Year. The designer looked ultra-fashionable with simple make-up, pulled back hair, and an asymmetrical black one-piece.

Other award winners this year included Alexa Chung, who took home the British Style Award for the third year running (and she looked amazing in a flowered Simone Rocha dress) and Cara Delevingne, who won the Model Award.

Holiday Diet Easy Tips

Here’s a few easy tips that you will be thankful for at your post-feast weigh in. While nothing is more satisfying than biting down on a turkey thigh, skin crunching under your teeth, that’s where most of the fat resides. If you do cook a whole bird, skip the skin, just focus on the meat. Skip the store bought, ready made stuffing. Like most processed foods, it is filled with sodium and all sorts of ingredients you can’t even pronounce. Instead, make your own using whole wheat bread. When making your mashed potatoes, replace half the potatoes and butter with cauliflower and broccoli. Not only will you get the same, creamy texture, you just loaded it with vitamin C and K. If you want to go all out, use sweet potato instead of regular.

Nothing says that your cranberry sauce has to be loaded with sugar. Replace sugar with apple sauce and a dash of orange juice and you just cut the sugar content by at least half. Try and have as many vegetable sides as possible. Most are loaded with fiber and will help you feel fuller without the added guilt of a calorie overload. And drink drink drink! Sorry, don’t mean booze. Start your meal with a big glass of water. This will help get your metabolism going and will help fill some space in your belly.
What would a Thanksgiving feast be without your good old pumpkin pie. I will give you a break here since you were so good with your dinner. You may have a slice, no whipped cream! When you buy it at the store, be aware of the sugar content. Try and get something with a relatively low number.

Follow these few easy tricks, and those holiday pounds won’t stand a chance. Who says you can’t have your turkey and eat it too? Happy Thanksgiving!

I love Kiehl’s Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser…it’s great for dry and sensitive skin. Black Tea Cream by Fresh also works wonders for my dry skin! And Mac lip gloss, In Love Nectar, gives my lips a bit of natural glimmer and color, so I always have it with me.

AMY PAFFRATH FILLS US IN ON…EVERYTHING

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.

My personal style is funky and fun. I’m drawn toward bright colors and fun prints. But my style can change from day to day. Somedays I’m feeling sophisticated so I’ll wear a form fitting dress from Single. Other days I’m feeling playful so I’ll throw on some bright printed leggings and some sassy knee high boots. It definitely varies but I choose things that show off my body and even if I’m wearing black I’ll always have something in a bright color. Whether it’s my shoes or a bag or a piece of jewelry or a bold lipstick I alwyas have a pop of color.

YOU RECENTLY WENT FROM RED HEAD TO BLOND. YOU LOOK AMAZING AS BOTH! WHAT PROMPTED THE CHANGE AND HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY CHANGE WITH THE NEW COLOR.

Thank you! I was cast in a CBS pilot eariler this year which starred JoAnna Garcia. She was also a red head at the time and I guess about 4 days into rehearsals the execs realized we looked a lot alike so they called me asked me if I’d change it. They said I could chose blond or brunette, whatever, I just couldnt stay red. I’d been looking for an excuse to go blond for quite sometime so this was the perfect excuse! I LOVE changing my hair and actually used to be a hair model back in high school and college. I love the thrill of transformation. When you’re hair modeling you’re in the hands of the best stylists in the business so it’s fun to see what they’ll create. It’s the same here in Hollywood. I know if CBS is footing the bill I’m going to be in good hands. I’m not afraid of change. It’s fun and I wish i could be even riskier! I loved Demi Lovato’s blue ombre. I did it in pink for “Jersey Shore After Hours,” but mine were clip ins. Nothing too permanent. I do notice a difference in how people approach me. It’s a very different kind of attention as a blond. You get more aggresive attention as a blond. Lots more cat calls and derogatory “compliments” haha! It’s interesting how people treat you based on appearance!

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS AND WHY?

I’m newly obsessed with Erin Fetherston right now. The line is so feminine and pretty and I love the great patterns and colors she uses. For classic style I love Diane Von Furstenberg. She knows how to flatter a womans body. Both of the really expensive pairs of shoes I own, and yes there are only 2, are both Miu Miu. I recently got to wear an amazing Alexander McQueen dress. That was fun. I love the riskienss of McQueen. But if you go for it it pays off. I also love the fun fabulous and funky Betsy Johnson. She definitely captures my playful side when it comes to fashion. I’ve been blessed through my many on camera jobs to be introduced to so many amazing lines that are affordable and adorable. I especially love some of the Miss Me tops and dresses I’ve worn. Rebecca Minkoff is amazing too. Love her sexy dresses. Also you can always find something camera ready at at Marciano.

WE HEAR YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED. CONGRATULATIONS! WITHOUT GIVING TOO MUCH AWAY WHAT WERE/ARE SOME OF YOUR MUST HAVES FOR YOUR DRESS?

I AM getting married! I’m so excited! It’s such a fun time in my life and I’m so blessed to have found the man of my dreams. I can’t wait for him to see me in my dress. It was the first thing I got! It’s everything I wanted in a gown. I thought I would be more of a modern bride but I surprised myself with how traditional my taste has been. My gown must haves were: 1. Comfort. I have to be able to walk in it. I am getting married on a beach so the sand is already going to cause a walking hazzard ha ha, the dress can’t be a hurdle. 2. It must have straps of some kind. Mine is a halter. 3. No princess gowns. It’s just not my style, nor does it go with a beachy vibe.

WHAT ARE YOUR “CANNOT DO WITHOUT” BEAUTY ITEMS?

Of course I can’t live without the entire Sibu Beauty line. Especially the cellular support capsules and Liquid vitamin supplement which keep my hair skin and nails helathy from the inside out. I also cannot live without Calvin Klein Euphoria perfume. I love it, my fiance loves it. I have an entire drawer of lip glosses, lip sticks, lip balm. I’m a bit of a hoarder. My favorites are Julie Hewett Camilella Lip Blm in Ruby. I use it almost every day. It’s dense and hydrating and has such a pretty light red hue. LaLicious lip butter is heavenly. I’m also newly obsessed with Nars velvet matte lip pencil. For a light tint of color plus moisture AND an SPF I love Loreal colour riche lip Balm. It’s awesome and so affordable! For my face, I always use Mac Mineralize Foundation when I’m going to be on camera, plus its got an SPF which is essential in my make up. I adore the pretty pastels that Essie nail polish makes. I love an at home mani and I have pretty extensive nail polish collection. Every thrifty glarmour girl knows that Maybeline basic black mascara is seriously the best there is. L’oreal Clinical Repair Collagen Filler has been my fountain of youth and L’Oreal Evercream hair care keeps my over styled hair silky and hydrated. I go hiking a lot so I’m also dousing on Neutrogena sunscreen before I hit the mountain. Sun protection is important to me.

WHERE DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO DO ALL THESE DIFFERENT PROJECTS? TELL US YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT EACH ONE.

I’m a firm believer that you have time for what you make time for. I may be busy round the clock with projects but its because I’m so passionate about all of them, I make time to work on them all! I”m super excited about my recent guest spot on Hot In Cleveland, which airs on November 28. I got to work alongside some TV legends which was surreal. I was just in awe watching Betty White, Wendy Malick, Valerie Bertanelli and Jane Leeves work. I mean thse women are comedic geniuses. It was the best experience! Then on top of that Regis Philbin and Heather Locklear are also guest stars in my episode. So it was really special to be a part of that. I’ve defintiely been bitten by the sitcom bug. I love the live audience and the fast paced nature. It’s just a fun energy.

On the hosting side, “Jersery Shore After Hours” is a blast because I’ve been able to be a part of a pop cluture phenonmenon in some small way! Its a whirlwind. These kids were overnight celebrities and I’ve gotten to be right in the thick of it. It’s like playing a part when we shoot. I get in guidette mode and I go ot work. I’ve been supporting myself solely off my hosting career for a while now and I enjoy the life it affords me. I’m alaways taking on new hosting gigs. I want to be like Ryan Seacrest in that sense. Just building an entertainment empire. Right now I’m doing a few shows for BiteSizeTV on Mevio.com one of which is a daily show called Hollywood Minute. I’m also hosting and producing a very cool web talk show dedicated to spotlighitng up and comers called Trend This! That project is very fulfilling becasue it combines my love for hosting and acting all in one dream job. We have interviews with interesting actors, musicians, travel experts, etc but I also get to film funny little scripted bits too. As a producer, I’m helping to secure guests, create segments and write sketches. I have a lot of creative control which i like. I also love my co-host Emrhys Cooper. He’s sexy, British and is such a good sport. We dont take ourselves too seriously. We are always filming these odd bits but we both just go with it. I think thats what makes it fun to watch. I’m also planning my wedding which is a lot of work, but again, fun work. I think I have a future as a party planner if this whole acting, hosting, comedy thing doesn’t work out. Drew and I are really enjoying the wedding planning process. It’s been fun to combine our ideas and see them come together. Bottom line is love what I do and I love being busy. So I am truly grateful that I get to be so busy doing things that I love. I hope that continues for a very long time.

YOU CAN FIND AMY ON TWITTER @AMYPAFFRATH. A NEW EPISODE OF “JERSEY SHORE AFTER HOURS” AIRS TONIGHT ON MTV. ALSO BE SURE TO CHECK OUT TREND THIS AT WWW.TRENDTHIS.TV and HOLLYWOOD MINUTE at HOLLYWOODMINUTE.MEVIO.COM.

Organic Beauty Products

As more and more consumers are looking for healthier alternatives to save themselves from unwanted exposure to toxic chemicals, parabens, hormones and other dangers that have lurked in our beauty cabinets for decades, it is important to know what products are truly natural and organic. There are plenty of tips when it comes to finding the right products. For starters, when you see a label that states that something is “natural”, look for organic, fair trade, or vegan in addition. It will be a good step in the right direction. Every day, more and more healthy and hypoallergenic products are hitting the market for those who care not only what goes in the body, but on the body as well. One downfall of this can be the steep prices of accessing pure ingredient filled beauty treats, however that no longer has to be the case. ONE TO WATCH: MICHAEL ROARK

1. Let’s start with the fashion questions, how would you describe your style? Who are your favorite designers?

I usually keep it pretty laid back, more of a jeans and t-shirt guy. For suits I prefer Hugo Boss and If you were to check out my closet you would find plenty of CK, BKE, Hurley and Armani.

2. What are your fashion staples? What is the oldest item in your closet and why is it still

there?

As far as staples go, there’s my Chicago Bears hat and I’m the guy that wears sandals when it’s freezing out. Oldest item in my closet is probably my old traveling cap. It’s not much to look at but it has character and has seen a dozen or so countries.

3. What was it like working with Steven Soderbergh on Magic Mike (now on DVD)? How happy were you didn’t have to wear those outfits?

Just can not say enough nice things about the guy. Other than being genuinely impressed by watching him be a one man show (Director, DP, Camera Operator, etc) he’s just a very kind and generous guy. He’s a great story teller and is incredibly proficient at communicating with the actor and giving the actor space to create…and some of those outfits were hilarious. I would have been fine wearing them for the laugh but probably not down to the pub.

4. We see you are going to be on NBC’s “Revolution.” Describe a day in your life without electricity.

How cool would that be if just for a day? I would probably get a chance to sleep in for once. Then I would round up some buddies for yard games like capture the flag, kick the can and anything else we played as kids. At night we would do the campfire thing and sing some Jack Johnson and Tom Petty. We might have to figure out something else for the marshmallows…

5. What is next for Michael Roark? Where can we find you on twitter/facebook?

Revolution airs Monday 29th on NBC and guest starring on season 3 Finale of Rizzoli & Isles in December on TNT. Going into 2013, can find me on “The Following” on Fox Jan 21st, mid season on new Cinemax drama “Banshee” premiering in January and as country boy dirt track racer Ty Hargrove in the Feature Film “LA Dirt” releasing early 2013.
