SUMMER TRENDS Around the World 2016

SUMMER TRENDS Around the World 2016

Blue eyeshadow

Before you fob this one off as far too 80s to make a return, check out the painterly cobalt lids at Missoni. Eyelids accented with shades of blue was perhaps the biggest beauty trend of the season. We watched Lucia Pieroni paint model’s middle lashes with MAC Chromocake in Cyan at Mary Katrantzou, Lucia Pica blend a wash of sea-blue in a doe-eyed shape over model’s lids at Roksanada Illincic and Tom Pecheux transform models at Chanel into superheroes with a mask of blue across the eyes. Any shade goes, so work with your skintone – think baby blues for lighter skin, turquoise for medium skin and cobalt blue for darker skin.
Rope ponytail

No longer just our gym go-to, the classic ponytail has been elevated by a simple twist. Seen at Public School, JW Anderson and Sportmax this hairstyle looks intricate in detail, but it’s simple in practice. It’s also the perfect hairstyle for summer, especially if you suffer from frizzy humidity hair. Simply split your ponytail in two, twist from the centre outwards, then wrap around each other.

Larger than life lashes

If you sometimes worry your mascara looks clumpy, don’t. This season, you’re bang on trend. At Marni lashes were larger than life in the form of spidery extensions, while at Marc Jacobs, models were made to look like they had been out all night. The trend was taken even further at Jeremy Scott and DAKS where lashes were literally drawn on with eyeliner for an almost comic book effect.

Whimsy hair accessories

Hair accessories have always been around, but this season sees a play on whimsical notions: think A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

At Rodarte, antique gold brooches were placed in model’s hair haphazardly to create a blithe look, while at Dolce and Gabbana, head scarves and flower halos were alternated throughout the show. The girlier, the better.

Millennials Face Mask

If you feel like the face-mask selfie is an unofficial series that’s been living in your Instagram feed for a solid few years now, good observation. According to WWD, recent findings from the NPD Group show that while anti-aging product sales are decreasing among millennials (they care more about natural skin care and color cosmetics), sales of masks have been continuously on the rise. From 2013 to 2015, sales doubled in the category as a whole, and clay formulas specifically are making a comeback.

Insta-worthy options (think GlamGlow’s silver, alien-like GravityMud Firming Treatment and cute Korean animal sheet masks) are impulse pick-me-up buys that have likely contributed to this statistic, but as WWD reports, L’Oréal chief product accelerator Sam Cheow says clay is feeling particularly cool again because of the superfood trend. The formulas tend to fall into the naturals category, with an emphasis on the chemical-free route to glowing, healthy skin. Apparently millennials are eating them up.

This trend is timely considering the fact that clays, like muds, are good for deep-cleansing. With humidity and sweat contributing to clogged pores, I always stock up on clarifying products in the summer. Dermalogica Skin Refining Masque andRéVive Masque de Glaise Purifying Clay Mask are my two favorites for the same reason: They do the jobs without totally stripping the skin of moisture. I do find the Dermalogica mask is best when I need extra lifting power, so I sometimes use it exclusively on my T-zone. And yes, they both look great in selfies.

Moves to Get you Ready for Crop Top Season

If you follow Karlie Kloss on Instagram, chances are you’ve seen the supermodel working out in a sun-drenched loft space. And chances are you’ve then a) wished you lived in an equally gorgeous space, and b) wondered what moves, exactly, the model has been doing to get those long, lean, Adidas-approvedmuscles.

Her secret? ModelFit, the brightly lit downtown New York City studio that focuses on smaller and slower movements meant to tone the body. What it lacks in high-tech decor and state-of the-art machines it more than makes up for in loyal celebrity clients (everyone from Kloss’ BFF Taylor Swift to fitstagrammers likeHannah Bronfman have snapped themselves inside the chic, airy space).

While the classes clock in at $40 a session, the hotspot studio just announced new membership pricing for unlimited classes at $425 a month (you also get a whole bevy of other perks, like guest passes and retail discounts, when you sign up). If you’re already strapping on ankle weights at the ModelFit barre four to five times a week, it averages out to about $21.25 a class–and think of how good your chances will be at running into your favorite it-girl.

But if you don’t have a chance to check out the model-approved workout in person (or you’re still waiting on that invite from Kloss), good news: ModelFit trainer Lauren Ashley shared a do-anywhere workout exclusively with Well+Good. And yes, the core, butt, and leg moves are toning even if you do them in front of the TV, instead of that wall of windows.

Scroll down to see 3 muscle-toning, core-building, Karlie Kloss-approved moves from ModelFit to try at home.

1. Core-Strengthening Twist

2. As you lower the resistance band, lift your left knee to meet it. Return to starting position. Repeat 12-15 times, and then switch sides.

2. Booty Pulser

$1 Million a Week to Charter a Mega-Yacht?

MEGA YACHTS CHARTER, org/mega-yachts-charter/" debug="false"] Mega Yachts Charter

Yacht sales climbed 40 percent in 2015 as David Geffen, Katy Perry and other big names pay top dollar to vacation in private

The hottest ticket at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival proved to be an invitation aboard Russian businessman Roman Abramovich’s 533-foot yacht — the second-largest in the world and worth an estimated $500 million. Equipped with two helicopter pads, multiple swimming pools, 24 guest cabins and even a missile defense system (to help against pirates), the Eclipse is just one example of how “a yacht offers an environment no hotel can rival,” says Katya Jaimes, a charter broker with International Yacht Corporation based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom as well as Kendall Jenner could be spotted taking advantage of the amenities, but they’re hardly the only stars drawn to ships that double as the ultimate symbol of power. In 2015, sales of boats longer than 78 feet climbed 40 percent and, according to yacht brokers Camper & Nicholsons International, more than 450 mega-yachts were sold, worth a combined value of more than $3 billion. While in Cannes, Mick Jagger hung out on Microsoft mogul Paul Allen’s palatial 414-foot Lurssen yacht, which was built for a reported $250 million and has its own recording studio. David Geffen posted a photo of Bruce Springsteen aboard his 454-foot yacht, Rising Sun.

But according to experts, there’s a reason aside from luxury and bragging rights that yachting appeals to music’s high earners. “Musicians who are on tour most of the year rely on others to do things for them,” says Rebecca Riley, a charter broker with Anything on the Water in Fort Lauderdale. “The yachting industry is used to that — taking even the most outlandish request in stride and doing everything in its power to make it happen.”

Cost generally isn’t an issue: According to brokers, stars prefer 200-foot boats with modern lines that charter for $250,000 to $1 million per week, not including additional fees. Must-have features like those aboard the Italian-made Suerte — one of this season’s hottest new yachts that costs $600,000 per week — include multiple sun decks and swim platforms so grand they are called “beach clubs.” There also are custom control systems that allow guests to tweak everything from the music, lighting and temperature to the blinds on the windows through a tablet device.

But if Suerte’s price tag causes pause, those looking for a chic getaway to the Mediterranean could charter the more modest Rockstar — a 161-foot motor yacht available for $275,000 a week that offers indoor/outdoor bars and a full-size gym. Or, there’s the option of chartering from an actual rock star. The 160-foot Cyan, owned byU2’s The Edge and Bono, is available for $200,000 per week and includes an outdoor movie theater and a baby grand piano, while Eric Clapton’s 157-foot motor yacht Va Bene, which sleeps 12 guests in six cabins, charters for $170,000 per week.

Yachts of this caliber often require a crew of 10 to 15 members who run the boat, launch the tenders and toys (yacht-speak for amenities like three-story inflatable water slides and two-person submarines) and ensure every detail both inside and out is meticulously maintained. “The number one thing celebrities want is a first-rate, can-do crew,” says Riley.

When yachts are no longer docked and go out to sea, for example, the cost of coordinating and shipping makes sourcing even the most mundane items an ordeal. “We once spent $25,000 to charter a plane for four cases of seedless grapes to go to Grenada,” says Tim McMillan of Yacht Chandlers, which has outposts in the Caribbean and France. “We had a client who wanted Wonder Bread and Campbell’s tomato soup in Tahiti. It cost over $1,000 to ship less than $50 worth of groceries.”

Above all, though, anonymity is perhaps the greatest selling point. When Jay Z andBeyoncé took a yacht from Cannes to Nice to Cap Ferrat in September 2015, they were able to do so with maximum privacy from paparazzi. In addition to signing a nondisclosure agreement, crew members who board a celebrity charter on Captain Marc Wellnitz’s 130-foot yacht to the Caribbean or Mediterranean must adhere to a strict list of rules. For example: “If you need to call home during the charter, you may not mention who you have on the boat. (You can’t even tell Mom and Dad.)” Adds Jaimes: “Celebrites can give the paparazzi all the flash and glamour of appearing on a spectacular boat, but once aboard, they have complete control. At their whim, they can choose to entertain; they can close themselves off and have total privacy; or they can leave the harbor and get out on the water.”

Secrets of Her Majesty’s diet and lifestyle at 90

Low carb diets may be associated with bodybuilders and high fashion models, but Queen Elizabeth II, who is celebrating her official 90th birthday this weekend, has also ditched the dough in the quest for better health.

Britain’s longest-ever reigning monarch eschews carbs and abides by a strict low-fat diet of mainly fruits, vegetables and the occasional treat of dark chocolate and a swig of Gewürztraminer.

As the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations get under way this weekend, commencing with the national service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, London (10 June), Her Royal Highness’ personal chef has divulged the secrets to her longevity and rude health, putting it down to her lifestyle, The Times reports.

Darren McGrady said: “The Queen is very disciplined. It is partly that and partly her genes. That’s what keeps her so slim – cutting out those carbs when she is not entertaining.”

The former chef to the Queen for 11 years, and later Princess Diana, claimed that the food she eats when entertaining is rather different to what she lives on in her private life with the Duke of Edinburgh, 95.

He continued: “At a state banquet she might have halibut with a lobster mousse and champagne sauce. But the rest of the week, she is eating healthy.

“If she has fish, it will be something like grilled salmon with some vegetables and a nice salad. Then a bowl of fruit would be her pudding. If it is meat then it is often game. She might have a venison steak, or a little piece of pheasant – that is fantastic protein.”

He hints Her Majesty is a Queen of ketosis, shunning all starchy carbs. McGrady added: “She would cut out all the carbs. She does not have any bread with the meal. She would not have any potatoes, rice, pasta. It would just be the vegetables.”

When it comes to treating herself, the Queen is “a chocoholic”, the chef reveals. “She loves chocolate. But the discipline is that she will just have a tiny piece at a meal.” But a Snickers bar doesn’t make the cut. “She loves Bendicks Bittermints. Chocolate ice cream and Bendicks Bittermints is something she would enjoy,” he added.

And when it comes to alcoholic beverages, Her Majesty inherited her love of gin and Dubonnet before dinner from the late Queen Mother, an indulgence shared with her sister Princess Margaret. But McGrady let on the Queen’s admiration for fragrant wines from the Alsace region of France. “She likes Gewürztraminer. She often has a glass of that when she is entertaining,” he said.

As members of the public prepare their mountains of sandwiches, Pimm’s and flasks of tea ahead of the revelries and street parties this weekend, the weather is set to be drizzly on Saturday and Sunday, though the temperature will be mild, peaking at 21°C. Trooping the Colour, an annual pageantry and spectacle commemorating the Queen’s Birthday Parade will start at 10.15am, and the Patron’s Lunch takes place on Sunday (12 June) from 1.15pm. Both events will be broadcast live on BBC1.

The Ultimate Guide to Buying Men’s Watches

There comes that time when just about every man feels the need to fulfill the urge and veritable rite of passage of buying that proper watch. However, how do you know which is the proper one for you? For an outsider, the world of men’s accessories can sometimes feel like a pretentious club keen on making sure you do not become a member. Ask any enthusiast the difference between an automatic and a quartz movement, and you will get that long lecture on the history of watches.

Happily, here is some information that will help you navigate this intimidating subject and make you feel empowered to make that next big purchase with confidence. In cases like these, knowledge is definitely power.

The Basics of Movement

The first thing you need to do is understand what makes it tick. This means reading a primer on the importance of movements. Movement, also called caliber, is the mechanism that makes these devices work as well as they do. In today’s world of watchmaking, there are two basic movement types. The first is quartz, which utilizes an oscillator regulated by quartz and powered by a battery for keeping time. Many high-end versions use quartz movement, as shown in Explain That Stuff, since they are cheap and very accurate. The second movement type is where things start getting really interesting.

Any “real” lover of these accessories will say that mechanical movements are the only way to power a one. While some are manually wound, most mechanical movements are now automatic. The automatic kinds work by using the wearer’s wrist to wind the mainspring. Many brands produce in-house movements that are exhaustively tested before being sold. Other companies purchase ready-made calibers from specialty manufacturers for use in many mid-range automatics.

Enthusiasts of these accessories would never dream of owning a quartz model even when they are known to be far more accurate. Why, then, is there so much buzz around mechanical models?

In most instances, it all comes down to how these devices tell time. It is the same reason why some would prefer a classic car instead of a modern car, or vinyl records instead of MP3 songs. It is not something about what it does, but how it does it. For many men, this is important.

An automatic timepiece is a living thing, something you discover once you get your hands on one of DailySale’s deals on men’s watches. A major beauty point is that the second hand travels continuously in a smooth sweep, while the quartz ticks once a second.

One more thing to keep in mind: once you take off the automatic, it eventually stops. The amount of time it runs without being on your wrist is dependent on every individual piece, but many continue working for about 48 hours without rewinding. Some can even go on for even five days.

Types

Once you have a grasp on what makes it tick, the next important consideration is style. Every life situation requires a different type. These are the major ones vying for your attention.

  • The Diving Model – This is designed to survive the depths of the ocean. They are characterized by a unidirectional bezel, luminous hands and dials, and rugged construction. They tell the user how much immersion time he has left.
  • The Dress Piece – Like jewelry, this type tends to be understated. It has a lack of adornments and a simple face with Roman numerals. Usually paired with a leather strap, the best kinds of these models are thin and can go unnoticed under a wearer’s cuff. This does not perform much more than just telling time and is most likely made from precious metal.
  • The Aviator – Wristwatches made a big hit in 1911 when Cartier made one for pioneer pilot Alberto Santos Dumont, according to a BBC news story. Since then, aviation models have continued to be a key feature on the market. It can offer lots of information vital to pilots during the days before electronic navigation made its debut. Many aviation models have a black face with luminous dials and numerals.
  • The Driving Model– Motorsport projects the image of masculine glamour that is irresistible to manufacturers. It has a chronograph complication, a stopwatch function relevant to motor racing. Some models even have a tachymeter for measuring speed. In addition, the extra buttons tucked into the side make them look attractive, too.
  • The Minimalist – This is great for people who like fixed-gear bikes, Apple Mac computers, and carefully tucked facial hair. These devices are usually powered by quartz movements, but some have in-house automatic and manual movements for the individual.

While looking at timepieces, the choice you make obviously depends on your tastes and needs. For a couple of hundred dollars, you can get a minimal quartz watch from leading designer brands. At a lower price range, you can still find automatics. If you are lucky to have a few thousand dollars to spend, your options open up from the classic pre-owned classic model to brand new models from the world’s greatest brands.

Louis Vuitton in Rio

Brazil is a land fighting an epidemic (Zika), experiencing a maybe/maybe-not presidential impeachment and economic malaise, and it is under pressure for its handling of the upcoming Summer Olympics. Is it really the place for a no-holds-barred haute European fashion show, as Vuitton held last weekend in the shadow of the Oscar Niemeyer-designed Niterói Contemporary Art Museum?

Vuitton said yes, becoming the first European brand to bring its catwalk to the country. And it arrived with its eyes open and its arguments mustered.

Brazil is among Vuitton’s 10 biggest markets, on the same scale as France, Germany and Russia. Vuitton has had a bricks-and-mortar presence in the country since 1989. “We have been investing in Brazil for the long-term,” said Michael Burke, its chief executive, who added that Rio was far away from the site of the Zika outbreak. “We are not going to drop everything and run at the first sign of crisis.”

Still, conceded the brand’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière, its executives had discussed the possibility of moving the show. But when things are bad, he said, is exactly when you want to show your support. And for a fashion brand, the biggest, loudest way to do that is to have a show that is live-streamed around the world, employs a few thousand local workers for two weeks, and entertains approximately 500 guests, including 300 clients from about 25 countries, about half of whom the house brought over (the rest were either local residents, or flew in on their own planes).

There were also celebrities like Alicia Vikander, Catherine Deneuve, Jaden Smith and Zendaya. And they were treated not just to the show but to a helicopter ride, stand-up paddle-boarding and a tour of local modernist architecture, among other expeditions (because when you are asking people to travel so far, you have to throw in some more sweeteners). Vuitton is also underwriting four exhibitions coming to the Niterói, so in some ways the 20 minutes of runway styles was just the beginning.

And as far as those 20 minutes went, they were a streamlined and uncompromising river of bright colors and sporty references (scuba, soccer, sailing), body-conscious cutaways, ruffles and leather. There were dresses cut short at the front and swirling long tails at the back; paper-thin leather tunics over skinny moto trousers; graphic layers of contemporary art references and L.K.D.s — little khaki dresses — sliced and diced like a less sparkly version of the Vuitton frock Taylor Swift wore to the Met Gala. The rib cage and the upper abs were the featured erogenous zone.

“It is tropical and urban at the same time,” Mr. Ghesquière said by telephone before the show. “I had to pay tribute to the country we are in, but also bring some of Paris with me.”

In this, Mr. Ghesquière’s third Resort offering was a natural extension of recent runway shows that have happily moved Vuitton away from the designer’s original strategy of “wardrobing” — a fancy word for the kind of basics that form the skeleton of a wardrobe — and into the realm of real fashion: riskier, but also potentially more desirable.

This was certainly true of the kaleidoscopic deconstructed surfer dresses, though it’s hard to imagine there are many women out there who want a print of soccer players kicking away on their cocktail dresses, though I could be wrong.

I wasn’t, admittedly, there, but watching the livestream on my computer. Thus I did not feel the embrace of the local population that some attendees’ reports indicated. But maybe my viewing arrangement provided some (literal) long-range perspective.

When Mr. Ghesquière noted that the museum was across the road from a favela, and the people who lived in the slum would be able to see the show from a stairway and their balconies, it was hard not to grimace. After all, they were not among the invitees, and they would not be able to buy what they saw.

“But they can dream about it,” Mr. Burke argued. “We give them that dream. And one day they will be able to buy it.”

In the end, it’s that measure that has proved these sorts of risks are worth the effort. According to Mr. Burke, the main “fashion week has become so intense, it is virtually impossible to hear yourself think. It’s a circus. These Cruise shows hark back to the ’50s and 60s world of couture, when clients began a relationship with a designer that could last a lifetime.”

He said most of the clients the house brings to Cruise shows immediately order pieces from the collection. So Vuitton not only knows what pieces will be most popular, but the clients also act as “influencers” once they go back home, each reaching 50 to 100 friends/potential clients who might go into a Vuitton store and order, too.

All of which means the inflation of the Cruise season is not going to end any time soon. Indeed, Mr. Ghesquière said as much, noting that after last year’s Cruise show in Palm Springs, Calif., at the modernist Bob and Dolores Hope estate, he realized the engine of his Cruise shows could be powered by “traveling for architecture.” To that end, Asia is still wide open — “we’ve never done a show in Asia,” he noted. And pressure is on for each show to be more spectacular and memorable than the last, in a more memorable venue, adding to the potential for still more controversies.

To wit, this week, Gucci is to hold its Cruise show in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey in London, the resting place of Geoffrey Chaucer, Isaac Newton and Lewis Carroll, among others, as well as the site of royal coronations and weddings. Though the show is not taking place in the church itself (which is not available for events), the Rev. Peter Owen-Jones, the vicar of Firle, Glynde and Beddingham, West Sussex, recently told The Telegraph newspaper that allowing a fashion brand into the building was like “selling our soul for a pair of trousers.”

A LOVE SCENE BETWEEN ARYA AND SANSA?

For Sansa Stark to play the role of a lesbian character in Game of Thrones Season 6 sounds a little odd, but this is what the lead star Sophie Turner wants for Sansa. Believe it or not, the actress wants her character to have intimacy with none other than Natalie Dormer’s Tyrion Lannister.

In the HBO TV series adaptation and the books of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy saga, fans have seen that the story does follow strange romances among the lead characters. The scandalous incestuous affair between Cersei (Lena Headey) and her brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has always remained the talk of the show, but it looks like the fans will get to see their favorite character turning into a lesbian.

Till this date, Sansa has been physically and emotionally molested by different men. In Season 1, she had to face the wrath of Joffrey Baratheon Tyrion Lannister). After that, she was married to Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) for a brief period; he did not harm her, but living with him was not easy for her. When she thought that things would be easier for her after the murder of Joffrey, she found herself with Petyr Baelish, aka Littlefinger, (Aidan Gillen), who in turn handed her over to Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), who sexually abused her many times.

In an earlier interview with Time, Turner revealed the rape scene was the hardest scene she has ever filmed.

“To have to do a really intense scene, like the rape scene last season, we couldn’t really sleep beforehand, Iwan and I. During the day, it was a bit awkward. But afterwards you just go to Safe Haven, which is the hotel bar, and sort yourselves out.”

Based on her history with men, it looks like Turner wants Sansa to have a moment of peace. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Turner stated that, since her character has suffered at the hands of different men over the course of the series, she thinks that Sansa’s ideal partner should be a woman.

“In the Game of Thrones universe, I think she’s going to have to swing the other way – because the men thing isn’t working for her. Judging by Sansa’s relationship with Margaery … probably Margaery.”

An affair between Sansa and Margaery would surely turn the events to a new direction, and Turner is quite open to experiment with her character. She further revealed that her younger sister on the show, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) can also serve a good sexual partner for her character.

“I’d love a love scene between Arya and Sansa.”

If Sansa was abused by different men, then Margaery’s case is not at all different. Ever since her debut in the show, she has been seen serving many men. First, she was married to Joffrey, who treated her badly and then after his death, she was married to his younger brother Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman), who loves her but has no sense of ruling a kingdom.

So, pairing Margaery with Sansa can be a nice move by the series creators. However, Margaery may think twice before thinking of having a lesbian relationship, especially because of her ongoing argument with the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) to save her brother, who has been depicted as a homosexual from the very beginning.
