Emma Norton RUNWAY Magazine interview

How did you get into TikTok?

During the early stages of COVID-19 lockdown, all my creative outlets came screeching to a halt. I’ve always been so passionate about acting. Social media became a huge deciding factor in production companies choosing their actors. I knew if I was going to keep up, I would have to build a platform from the ground up. I wasn’t familiar with TikTok until countless friends tried to get me to post a video. I soon realized TikTok was a great outlet for creatives like me to share their passions, no matter what type of content. Its global reach and the ability to connect with people made me fall in love.

What are your primary topics?

Content-wise, I post quite a bit of variety on TikTok (special effects makeup, my characters, acting scenes, cosplay, dancing, comedy, POVs, lifestyle, etc.). I’ve become known for my scary looks, especially around Halloween which is my favorite holiday. Whatever I cook up, I try to be as creative and authentic to myself as possible.

What are your favorite and least favorite things about social media?

Favorite: I just mentioned the variety, I love that I don’t have to look or act like one type. I can be any character or present myself in almost any way I want in order to be successful and have fun at the same time. I also love that social media gives me the ability to connect with so many different and like-minded people.

Least Favorite: Social media can reward people for the wrong behaviors. In other words, there’s a reward system for people who are hateful, obsessed with drama and gossip, create scandals and other negative narratives. It can be frustrating because creativity, art, and positive messages should be getting more attention.

Tell us about your personal style.

My style is flexible. I go from wearing an all-black, edgy outfit to wearing a glamorous sparkly gown. It’s so fun to explore my self-expression through my style, which I make sure is never limited to one aesthetic. I feel like I grow and change all the time. On a day-to-day basis, my style is heavily influenced by my mood or what I’m personally and mentally needing that day.

Tell us about your shoe collection.

My collection ranges from Air Jordan Retro High-Tops to crazy all-over “diamond” 6-inch heels. I think any good shoe collection has a mix between neutral toned basics (black, white, nude, and brown) and shoes with bold colors, fabrics, and designs. The shoes I wear most often are my black patent leather platform Doc Marten boots. Almost every single outfit in my wardrobe goes with these boots, and they give me the power boost I need. They also are incredibly comfortable.

Do you have pets?

I sure do! My Golden Retriever’s name is Ruby. Nothing beats how happy she is to see me when I come home after being away. I always look forward to plenty of quality time snuggling with her, she has the sweetest personality!

Tell us about your funniest thing you have posted about?

One of the funniest things I posted about was when I ran out of time to remove a full face of my Blue Tiger makeup  look before I had to hustle off to a doctor’s appointment to get my flu shot. Needless to say, the office staff and other people got a lot more than they expected that day.

Who is your favorite designer?

I love Christian Dior formal wear. Other favorites are Givenchy and Guo Pei Couture (because of the jaw-dropping gown they designed for Rihanna at the Met Gala). But, to be honest, I love so many designers just as much.

What is your favorite thing in your closet?

My favorite is an oversized black blazer that has stitched detailing, the design of a sword embroidered on each sleeve, and a stunning set of oversized safety pins on the cuffs. This blazer is special to me because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in stores. When I put on this blazer, it gives me a more masculine power touch to my otherwise feminine style.

Where do you go to relax?

I feel happiest when I’m relaxing at the beach, especially on Long Beach Island on the Jersey Shore. I also love to treat myself to a bath while watching the show I’m binging at that moment.

Tell us about what is next for you in terms of projects and roles.

As far as future projects, I recently relocated from Denver to Los Angeles, and am 100% focused on pursuing my career as an actor. I also have some merch in the works as well!

There are several wonderful organizations that I support however I can. I hope to continue leveraging my platform to educate people about charity: water’s mission of providing clean water to communities that don’t have access to this basic human necessity. I’ve recently started a relationship with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). I also support a Denver-based organization called Brought to Reality (BTR), which is focused on ending the stigma of mental illness. Please check out their websites.

IZZY STEVENS INTERVIEW

RUNWAY MAGAZINE

Tell us about your personal style.

I love adding a feminine touch to classically masculine styles; a lot of oversized blazers, button up shirts and fitted high-waisted pants. I see Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, and Elaine from Seinfeld as such style icons. My wardrobe consists of staple pieces I have invested in and will keep forever, and then unique vintage and thrift finds that give outfits a pop of personality. Many of my favorite things have come from thrifting or vintage markets, thrifting never gets old. I’m petite and have short limbs so dressing for my shape means high waisted pants, and I usually need to get everything tailored or cropped so it fits. It might seem like oversized is a thing for me, but that’s just because the clothes never fit right. I’ve embraced it. Some days I feel like going for a sort of Audrey Hepburn chic minimalist look, and other days I want to feel like a cowgirl, all rough leather and sass. It really depends on the mood, hey? That’s what is so great about fashion.

What do you like better, acting or directing?

This is the ultimate chicken or egg question for me. I honestly can’t pick – and hope never to have to! They’re both very important to me. I see different parts of my creativity emerge depending on which role I am taking on, and I crave that variety. Sometimes I want to be on the ride, as an actor, and sometimes I want to be building the ride, as a director.

Tell us about your shoe collection.

I basically wear two types of shoes: boots and loafers. I am not a big heel wearer, and I don’t really wear sneakers for fashion, but loafers and boots give me joy. I have a few staples that I love: a pair of furry Stuart Weitzman loafers that I got at Crossroads, a pair of pink leather Gorman loafers (an Australian designer I love), and a pair of black leather brogues with silver studs for when I want to feel like that badass cowgirl. I love how I can feel either dressed up or casual in them, but always comfy.

My favorite boots are my two pairs of RM Williams (another Aussie designer). I’ve got a brown leather pair from the 80’s which are super beat up and gorgeous, they literally have holes and I continue to wear them – and funnily enough they get complimented all the time. The other pair are brand new Adelaide’s, they’re walnut brown and feel so lush and fancy on my feet!

Do you have pets?

I always had both cats and dogs growing up. Right now, though, I frequently travel between LA and Australia for work so my lifestyle is too complicated for a pet. I’m so excited for the day I can have a pet again! For now I live vicariously through all of my friends who have furry pals.

What is your favorite color?

Yellow!

What is your favorite type of food?

Oh that’s tough, I love food. The best kind of food is the shared kind, everything tastes better in the company of mates or family, but there is so much good food to explore in the world. It’s become one of my greatest joys to travel and eat! I love Italian, Israeli, Thai, Japanese, and Indian food to name a few. Also chocolate. Obviously.

Tell us about your funniest moment on set.

It was a few weeks into shooting my first TV show when I was 17, and I had this scene where I was all by myself in the kitchen. In the scene, my character messily eats chocolate and accidentally lights a fire on the stove, and then has to chaotically put out the fire whilst chocolate drips down her face. At the end I had to deliver the line “Oh poo!” and oh man… for some reason every single take went wrong somehow, the fire wouldn’t light or it would be out of control, or the chocolate would spill too much, it was just a total shit show. The production crew and I couldn’t keep it together, we were laughing so hard that for me, trying to deliver the line ‘Oh poo’ at the end was near impossible. We did so many hilarious takes of that scene.

Riffing with Ken Jeong between takes on Occupation Rainfall stands out to me, too. We were shooting this intense action sci-fi film but my cheeks were spasming because I was laughing so hard with him.

Who is your favorite designer?

Celine, and lately I have been loving Nanushka.

What is your favorite thing in your closet?

Right now I am obsessed with an oversized green felt coat I found at an Idyllwild thrift store last month. It’s so gorgeous, I love the tortoiseshell buttons and how it seems to work with any outfit. Also my leather jacket, which I will love forever.

Where do you go to relax?

Nature: mountains or ocean. A hammock and a glass of wine always does me well.

Tell us about what is next for you, projects, roles?

I recently played the role of a young woman who gets spun into psychosis in a psychological thriller film which I directed called Seafoam. We’re currently editing that now and it’s looking so freaky and great, I can’t wait to share it. I’m currently on board as a director and producer on three other short projects which are in development, and I’m really excited about Occupation: Rainfall releasing in June. I got to reprise my role as Bella Bartlett, a tough resistance fighter who will stop at nothing to save her family from an invasion, she’s such a badass so it was a great role to revisit.

Zaria Interview Exclusive

Tell us about your role in Two Distant Strangers.
My role was Perri who was the female lead in the film. She is a no nonsense, speak her mind, type of woman. She knows what she wants and goes after it and is successful in her life because of it. Perri does a great job at being both strong and vulnerable. The writing was all there in that aspect where she was allowed to not be afraid of owning a gun and crying and screaming while witnessing something so horrific. She wasn’t boxed in by her ability to be strong and was amplified by her vulnerability. I think that can only be a testament to the collaborative nature of being directed so incredibly and a direct result of thoughtful writing.

Tell us about your personal Style. I would say my style is mostly 90s chic. I don’t know if that is what the Gen Z are calling it, I think it’s “cheugy, but it is mostly whatever makes me feel good. A simple Levi jean that has my curves and a white crop T is my everyday.

What are your favorite brands? I love Aritzia when I am looking for something more affordable and I love my Louis Vuitton purse that I carry around always. I’m more of a out-the-box artistic cool finds type of woman. If it looks like art— I’m wearing it.

Which designers do you use for couture red carpet events? I had the honor of wearing a custom dress by Dolce and Gabbana for the Oscars so they would be at the top of my list. I love looking at everyone’s style on the red carpet from Chanel to Versace. I am a big fan of looking at vintage red carpet and runway looks.

Tell about your shoes?  I have been wearing heels since I could walk. I wore my mom’s shoes since even as a toddler so I have always loved a good heel. They keep your calves in check! When I’m trying to give them a rest, I love a cute sandal.

What is your favorite thing in your wardrobe?  I have a great vintage bomber jacket I was gifted, its got the Prince logo on it and it is oversized and goes with everything and everyone loves seeing it. Because— I mean— Prince! It is black jacket and the Prince logo has every color you could think of.

Do you have pets? I wish. I grew up with a dog and had one ever since I was a little girl, but right now life is a little too busy to care for a puppy. Hopefully that will change soon. I had a Chocolate Lab and my brother got a Rottweiler when I was younger.

Where do you go to relax? I got this amazing facial by Ivan Pol at The Beauty Sandwich before the Oscars, it was so relaxing. I also went to the Tomoko Spa after the Oscars so that was a really beautiful experience.

What is the funniest thing to happen to you on set? Probably when I worked on “Dad Stop Embarrassing Me” with Jamie Foxx. It just so happens that my uncle Bentley Kyle Evans had gotten hired as well. We were in the middle of takes and at this point we had gotten a nice scene in the can already that was strict to script. We were trying the scene with alternative lines. So my uncle gave me a really funny alt line that was a bit risqué and Jamie didn’t know I had a new line, so when I said it, Jamie froze and looked at the camera and said in this really high voice “that wasn’t in the script!” He was so shocked it was hilarious. The entire cast and crew erupted laughing!

What is your favorite food? I love Mexican it is my favorite type of food and I could eat it every day of the week. I also really love sweet potatoes.

What kind of music do you like? My music tastes depend on my mood. Sometimes I feel like listening to Earth Wind and Fire, sometimes its Sam Cook, The Fugees, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, or Erykah Badu. If I am in for a fast-paced mood I love Dababy, Jay-Z, or Kendrick Lamar, so it just depends on the day. I work with some amazing artists to, I am also a songwriter. Benn Good, amazing producer, has really taken me under his wing and introduced me to artists like Alice Aera, Olivia Reid, and Esther Lewis—Who just performed in the “Care” fundraiser. She performed a song I helped write called: Hold on.

Tell us about your hometown. It depends on what you consider on hometown. I consider this town I lived in during middle school and high school in Indiana. It was about 30 minutes about from Chicago and I made friends there that I still have to this day. I think in such small towns you create really beautiful and lasting friendships.

Do you like to dance? I like to dance when no one is watching! I think it is a beautiful art form and I admire everyone who does it. I think that using your body to tell a story is honorable when it is done right, but I am not professionally trained…yet!

What is up next for you? I can’t wait for you to see me on the screen again soon.. but in terms of where that will be… you’ll have to wait and see!

Carmen Electra RUNWAY magazine exclusive

Carmen Electra - RUNWAY magazine cover - Hollywood Shoot

Tell us about your personal style?

My personal style has always been about taking chances. I’ve

always liked just what I like, its usually on the edgier side.

Getting into this business everyone wanted to change my style

and have me cover up more. I would rebel against that by

mixing designers with street style and adding a playful edge

to it!

How has your style been influenced?

Growing up in Cincinnati Ohio I was always inspired by

different edgier brands and creative music videos. The clothes

they would wear would help inspire my looks for years to come.

One of the first oufits I wore was a Terry Mugler suit that helpd

kick of my love for fashion. I love when designers get edgy and

mix rockstar chic with Hollywood glam.

What is your favorite type of shoe?

I honestly love combat boots and sneakers. I have a great pair

of Chanel combat boots that I live for. I have always liked to

break the rules and mix a Hollywood chic dress with a edgier

shoe.

You have had an amazing career, what has been

your favorite part?

Obviously working with Prince and having him believe in me

and giving me so many great opportunities was a highlight.

Honestly this is so hard! Singled Out, performing at the Crazy

Horse Paris, shooting for all the fashion magazines, all the

amazing events, It’s hard to choose!

Tell us about your music?

Growing up with a family of musicians and being a dancer

and performer is what I love the most about being involved

with music. Being able to come back into the music scene was

a blast! Shooting the videos, perming at large event spaces like

Coachella, Palm Springs “White Party”, and touring all over

was a dream. I actually recently started going to DJ school,

which has been a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to continuing

that and getting up there and sharing my latest passion with

everyone.

How do you stay in such great shape?

Growing up as a dancer has always helped me stay in shape.

I like to mix it up though, I love doing yoga, squats, taking

dance classes, teaching dance classes, and going to the gym

for cardio. Its also very important to drink lots of water and keep

your body hydrated so you can flush out your system. I eat

pretty healthy throughout the week too, but Sunday is junk day

and that’s when I eat whatever I want!

What’s your favorite type of music?

This is tough! I definitely am ADD when it comes to music, it really

depends on my mood. My mom loved disco, my dad played

rock and roll and blues, my brother was into Led Zeppelin and

more heavy bands, so I was exposed to a lot of different styles.

I remember in the 4th grade someone gave me a mix tape and

I became obsessed with hip hop. To this day it is and it still one

of my favorite types! Every so often I can get into the mood for

something more heavy like Slayer or Panterra. I also like to

switch it up for EDM/Dance music!

What do you do for fun?

I love to play the drums, I love to go to Dave & Busters and

play video games, I love to dance, I’m obsessed with roller

coasters, so any chance I get to take my friend to an amusement

park is always great. I also really love live performances on

the Sunset Strip, there’s nothing better than seeing your favorite

artist preform in a small venue with friends.

What are your beauty secrets?

Definitely water, it flushes everything out of your body. I used to

just come home and fall asleep with my makeup on, I definitely

don’t do that anymore. It’s very important to wash your face

before going to bed. I have a nightly regimen that I do. Some

products that I like are more expensive, but you don’t always

have to pay a lot of money for great products. I start off with a

scrub and then a facial cleanser that you can get at any drug

store. I follow that uo with a face cream and a product called

“Quench” that keeps my skin hydrated.

Do you have any pets?

I have a Pomeranian, who’s name is Roxy Reign. I named her

after the Roxy on Sunset Blvd after gogo dancing for a girl band

and Lemmy from Motorhead.

What inspires you?

Well I’m inspired by the first responders who are out there

fighting COVID-19 and all the people that are staying home

and helping us flatten the curve! Thank you!

What are three word that describe you?

Fiery, compassionate, rebellious

Jasika Nicole RUNWAY magazine Interview

Jasika Nicole RUNWAY magazine interview

What have you been doing during quarantine?

Staying home and making things: food, shoes, clothes, furniture,

textile art, pottery, watercolor. If I have the materials to create

it, I’ll do it.

I prefer breathable fabrics whenever possible in linen, highquality

You make your own clothes and shoes. What are

some of your favorite patterns and fabrics?

cotton, and silk blends. I’m really into polka dots and

hues in my seasonal color palette right now. Seasonal palettes

are a bit of an old-school approach to fashion and beauty, but

after reading the original (problematic, but informative) book

on color palettes for skin types that came out in the 70’s, it

all connected for me and it has had a huge impact on the

types of clothes I make and the outfits I now put together. I will

always have a place in my heart for Big 4 patterns (Vogue,

McCalls, etc), but I prefer working with indie patterns…the fit is

usually better requiring less adjusting and the instructions and

construction techniques are often more thoughtful and nuanced.

What is your favorite type of art?

I love the type of art that is usually labeled as “craft” and

therefore considered “women’s work” and not valuable enough

to be considered high art. It is a product of our society’s inherent

misogyny that puts functional craftsmanship like weaving,

basket making, pottery, quilting, etc. into categories that are

deemed less dignified than “art”. It is not a coincidence that

much of this art comes from poorer communities of color. I love

the intersection of modern artists with centuries-old craft and am

always excited to see how they innovate within the realm of art.

What is your favorite type of music?

I love soul music, but as long as it has a groove and I can sing

to it, it’s probably in my rotation.

What was your favorite subject in school?

English.

How do you relax?

By making. Knitting and pottery have proven to be very

therapeutic ways for my brain to relax and regulate my body’s

breathing while I focus my energy into something tangible and

malleable.

Tell us about your role on The Good Doctor. What

have you enjoyed most? What has been the most

challenging?

I play a pathologist named Dr. Carly Lever. I have most enjoyed

working with Freddie Highmore, he is a dream scene partner

and I am lucky to have spent pretty much all of season 3 with

him. The most challenging aspect has been having to field the

hateful and sometimes racist reactions from fans who either

didn’t want to see Shaun end up romantically with my character,

or felt deeply uncomfortable at seeing an interracial relationship

portrayed on TV.

Did you like school?

I loved school, because I knew it was the only way I was

going to get myself out of the South. Thankfully I was good at

school and was able to focus much of my energy into doing

well so that I could get scholarship money to go to college. I

grew up very poor and I knew the chances of me having the

kind of life I wanted to lead as an adult were going to rely on

me having some kind of higher education, but I feel resentful

that opportunities for poor people of color are so few and far

between. We already start out at a deficit when you consider

the effects of both generational poverty and trauma on BIPOC

communities, and then we have to work doubly hard to compete

with people who grew up with more resources, access and

institutional support.

Do you have any pets?

We have a Pitbull named Rosie.

What is your favorite color?

Yellow.

What’s up next for you?

Making sure me and my loved ones survive Covid-19 is my only

goal right now.
