Islands of the World Fashion Week

The third edition of the award-winning Islands of the World Fashion Week will continue the legacy of introducing stunning creations from both established designers and novices in the spectacular setting of The Bahamas. The three-day event will take place November 11–13 at the British Colonial Hilton, Nassau, The Bahamas.

The tour commenced with designers Eric Raisina of Madagascar, Harl Taylor BAG of The Bahamas, K-Bobby of Jamaica, and Nadya of Indonesia taking to the runway at the prestigious Fashion Week El Paseo in Palm Desert, California, in March. The next stop of the Tour was in Chicago’s renowned West Loop in August and then on to Miami in October, climaxing with the main and final event in Nassau in November. Stay tuned for highlights of the Tour.

The Fashion Show
The runway shows, receptions, and street parties will have you hopping all over the island, mingling with designers featuring their creations from such islands as Barbados, Cuba, Fiji, French Guyana, Grenada, Haiti, Indonesia, Jamaica, Madagascar, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, The Bahamas, and Trinidad & Tobago. The catwalk has also been graced with designs by noted international designers, Kenneth Cole, Nick Verreos (Nikolaki), Kevan Hall, Peter Ingwersen (Noir Illuminati II), Leanne Marshall, Henry Jackson, and b michael. The stage is set for a truly international meeting of cultures in the fashion world in this the International Year of the Rapprochement of Cultures as designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The “mosaic of cultures” takes on poignant significance this year as we draw attention to the phoenix rising out of the ashes of the devastation of the island-nation of Haiti, the on-going relief efforts and rebuilding initiatives for a sustainable Haiti with the production of Fashion Cares for Haiti: The Relief Benefit Fashion Show.

Milano Moda Pre-Collezioni

Telescope – Revolution Video

FLAGSTAFF, AZ Alternative rock four piece Telescope has released their first new single “This is the Revolution”. After taking a year off to write material for a new record, the band really delivers with this first track. A gritty energetic spin on pop rock. The first single paired with a powerful video raises hopes of carrying the bands energy into the completion of their new record.

A year after the release of the four song EP “Wind it Up” the band is poised to enter the studio with an album’s worth of new material and a sense of urgency to make the record of their career. After making demos of the new material and shopping to big name producers, The band caught the attention of grammy nominated producer Johnny K. “Johnny loves the songs, and the direction, he will help us find the heart of our sound, and make an incredible record, one we always dreamed of” says Mike Seitz guitar and keys in Telescope. The Band is recording with Johnny in his home town studio facility in Chicago in early October.

The video for the This is the Revolution” started as a concept with the band. “We just kept thinking about the imagery of piercing light in the dark. The ideas kind of evolved from there” says Seitz about beginning production stages of the video. Working with friend and videographer Ben Cornnelius, the team created the video concepts, constructed sets, hired actors, and shot the video on a shoestring budget in their home town of Flagstaff, AZ. “I love the creative process” Says singer and guitarist Seth Holland. “Whether its music or film, so putting the two together is even better”. The video directed and edited by Cornelius is set for release to online video channels, including youtube, Facebook, vimeo and others in early October.

“Wind It Up”, brought the band success when the track “Bright Eyes” was placed on NBC’s “Scrubs”, and “I’ll Drive tonight” had limited success at national radio. With this record the band hopes to launch into the national scene. “Radio, touring, and TV and film placement are all going to be priority for us this time”. Says Seitz “We want to realize our biggest dreams for this record, and I know we have to team in place to succeed, all we need now is for people to hear it”

What Your Clothes Are Telling Him

It is a well-known saying that “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”. Many women are not aware of the fact that people form a judgment about them based on the style and type of clothing they wear. In her book The Language of Clothes (1981), Alison Lune explains “our clothing conveys important information-or misinformation-about us long before we speak to someone at a party, on the street or in a meeting. Clothes are a universal language that telegraphs one’s personality, opinions, tastes and even occupation before we ever open our mouths.” Clothes are silent communicators of our conscious, and also our unconscious, sexual feelings. Each wardrobe decision tells others quite a bit including self-image and the level of confidence, as well as the way a woman expresses her sensuality. Thus, a woman’s clothes really do speak louder than words.

The outfits we wear create a sexual image for the men around us, and that image is created in the first five seconds upon entering a room. They wonder whether she can fulfill their fantasy, making her either completely delicious or irresistible, or not. Most men can and do read a woman’s signals immediately and determine whether she is approachable, seductive and alluring, confident, free-spirited or closed off. What is the message you are presenting? Consider the six basic outfits in a woman’s attire that convey messages to men.

On center stage first is the “Lbd”, aka the little black dress, with all its splendor and potential pizzazz. Combined with some hip strappy sandals this outfit can stop any man’s heart at twenty paces. This outfit reveals a woman’s sense of elegant boldness and communicates “I’m confident and available (perhaps) if you play your cards right and treat me with the style I’m accustomed to”.

Enter stage left is the professional pantsuit with a crisp white blouse referred to as the corporate go-to look. This suit portrays a woman who is polished, powerful and not classically romantic. But after dark, this outfit with some hot accessories like great chunky bangles, a flowing scarf or a chic ruffled blouse can send a whole new message that says, “I like to be in control, but I’m willing to share the power in the bedroom for that special man.”

It doesn’t get any better than a pair of skinny jeans with a modern fitted t-shirt and a fantastic pair of heels to make a man think a woman is delicious. Such an outfit has a strategic sparkle unto itself and reflects a woman who is self-confident and knows what she wants. She definitely lets him know, “I’m edgy, comfortable in my own skin… and I’m capable of flirting with any man who captures my eye and appreciates my fabulous energy”.

A soft, flowing pastel sundress conveys femininity like a whisper from a warm breeze. As her stylish hair brushes gently over her cheek and her dress softly drapes ever so close to the outline of her body, a man can be totally mesmerized by this look. With it, she is telling him, “I enjoy being a woman and I’ll just love having your arms around me while we kiss”.

The hip layered look with an alluring tank top or t-shirt, black jeans or leggings, and a boyfriend jacket or blazer spells sporty chic to the world. This alluring woman who will reveal her secrets only on her terms will charm any man in the near vicinity. She conveys the message “I’m playful, romantic and love to have fun, so let’s hit a happening place on the town and share a few spontaneous kisses.”

Jeans and a baggy t-shirt make a casual statement from a woman who is not craving romance, but she still likes to hang out with friends and acquaintances in a comfortable environment. She is not emphasizing her body and enjoys being free of constraints. Such an outfit tells a man

“I’m not really in the mood for a romantic encounter but would be happy to have your company as a friend.”

All of these styles send a man important clues about how a woman perceives herself and how she wants to be approached. A savvy man will pick up these clues immediately and adjusts his style of approach accordingly. So next time you wonder what to put on, remember that all eyes are on what you wear, and you are in charge of the image you want to create for your boyfriend or prospective new man.

The Art of Fine Jewelry – Susan Helmich

After focusing on painting and art history in college, Susan Helmich decided to take a metalsmithing class, diving deep into the history and evolution of metal work techniques. Soon after, everything fell into place. “Working directly with the metal was second nature to me,” Helmich enlightens. “I knew I had found my niche, and the rest is history.”

Helmich’s designs break free from the traditional world of fine jewelry, and she continuously strives to dazzle her customers and the industry. “My reputation in the fine jewelry industry over the years has become: ‘Expect the unexpected from Susan Helmich,’” she says.

The jewelry design veteran travels between her houses in Colorado and Arizona to run Opus Fine Jewelry in Scottsdale, Arizona. The gallery houses some of the finest and greatest works by artists including Helmich’s popular lines, “Seasons” and “Angels with Attitude,” and also collections from her business partner, Claudia Kretchmer.

While attending industry shows, Helmich developed an artistic camaraderie with Kretchmer’s late stepfather, Steven, often sharing thoughts, ideas and artistic technique. Helmich and Claudia were introduced shortly after and their friendship enveloped from there. The duo became even closer after the loss of Claudia’s parents four years ago.

“Today we share a vision, an inspiration, design ideas and a relationship that continues through love, respect and keeping a dream alive,” Helmich explains.

Inspiration for Helmich has always come through the people who have touched her mind and heart, as well as through life itself. The chance for her to express her unique artistic ability and metal work can be seen through the colors and gems she chooses for her collections. “Precious metals and gems are elements that connect us directly with our ancestors, our ancient past and earth’s elements,” Helmich expresses. “As an artist and goldsmith, I have chosen my palette of gems and precious metals to translate these ideas and feelings into fine jewelry.”

The art of communication also has become a strong inspiration for Helmich. Her collection “Angels with Attitude” showcases angel-shaped pendants, brooches, lapels and pins created to invoke meaning and sentiment for the wearer. Customers can choose a mood, expression or emotion aimed to reflect how the people surrounding them have made their life special. “I view jewelry as personal sculpture, and therefore, a vehicle of communication in its most primitive form,” Helmich explains. The line features angels of certainty, harmony, courage and grace and more.

Helmich’s designs also incorporate the use of fresh, vibrant colors – purple, green and orange being her favorites. The “Seasons” collection showcases many of these colors through a series of full and mini pendants suitable for any year-round occasion.

The pendants are reversible, available in white or yellow gold. Each seasonal pendant captures the essence of what that time of the year symbolizes.

Helmich also looks to music as a way of communication and created her favorite collection, “Rhapsody in Blue,” as an ode to the generation of music she experienced while she was growing up. “Again, music being another form of expression and communication I wanted to translate this into gold, platinum and the deep colors of tanzanite,” she says.” “Each piece was created in the same subtle sculptural beauty found in stringed instruments.”

Helmich’s fine jewelry work has remained at the forefront of the market, and the creative juices don’t seem to be running out anytime soon for this artist. “Lately, I am exploring bridal design,” Helmich hints. “I have more ideas than I can produce in one lifetime!”

First Date Do’s and Don’ts

Ah, the first date. One of the more complex social rituals, it is a curious combination of a job interview, Christmas morning and a multiple-choice test, all packed into a couple hours of suppressed panic. It is a giant burrito that looks and smells wonderful at first, but until eaten, has equal potential to disgust or delight. There are countless variables that figure into initial adventures of the heart, but here we’ll focus on what you should and shouldn’t do to make sure the outcome of your first date is delicious and comfortable to all of the senses.

Do’s

1- Spin the globe

Come into the first date with an arsenal of information on current affairs. Small talk is an inevitable verbal appetizer between two people who don’t know each other, and once you get past weather and work, you better have something interesting to say. Being informed tells your date that at least you are curious about the world around you, and that you are not apathetic, lazy and sheltered.

2- Settle down, and listen up

A common mistake some people make on first dates is to prove their value by immediately spewing forth their accomplishments before drinks are ordered. Be patient; you’ll get to ‘you’ in time. Instead of regurgitating resume highlights, demonstrate how wonderful you are by first asking questions, listening to the responses with genuine interest, than following up with further questions. If the date is worthy of you, the conversation will turn around and soon you’ll find yourself answering questions instead of asking them. Then you can talk about the volunteer work with manatees and the PhD in nuclear physics.

3- Believe the Boy Scouts

Forward-thinking is an attractive asset in a potential mate, so subtly demonstrate your smarts by being prepared. Pack non-bulky essentials on your person that your date may need during the course of the night, such as a pen, breath mints, gum, lighter, and chapstick, to name a few.

4- Pick a comfortable location

If it’s up to you to choose the spot for the first date, pick a place where you know one or more of the staff. This can be tricky, because if you walk in the door and everyone shouts your name and the bartender asks if you’ll be having the usual, it’s apparent that you spend a little too much time there drinking. But if you know one of the servers or hostesses, it gives you an opportunity to introduce your date with charm, and for them to see how you interact with other people. This is extremely important for a good first impression.

5- Show your stability

If you are lucky enough to have healthy relationships with most or all of your family members, make sure you talk about them with eagerness and acknowledgment of your good fortune. Whether your date comes from a broken home or shares your upbringing, you will demonstrate a capacity for love and affection, which indicates your kindness and overall stability. If your family background is less than perfect, talk honestly about your struggles and how you overcame them. By doing this, you will demonstrate determination and mental toughness, which is indicative of ambition and accomplishment.

Don’ts

1- Try to one-up your date

When your date tells a personal story about the past, avoid the natural tendency to ‘one-up’, even if it’s not your intention. If you’ve had a similar or comparable experience, feel free to talk about it, but do so after they finish speaking. Avoid injecting details that automatically diminish those of your date’s yarn.

2- Be distracted by your phone

Do not, under any circumstances other than extreme emergencies, text, take or make calls in the midst of talking to your date. If you absolutely have to reply to the string of emails circulating about Kim Kardashian’s accidentally see-through dress on the red carpet, then politely excuse yourself to the bathroom before going nuts. Have some respect for yourself and your date and turn your phone off before you sit down to eat or drink.

3- Bring up ‘touchy’ subjects

Religion and politics have no place on first dates. They are contentious subjects and can potentially end a good time before it has a chance to begin. Whether you’re a Jesus freak or atheist, or a heat-packing Republican or tree-saving Democrat, save the heavy stuff for dates down the road.

4- Be someone you’re not

Don’t try to be someone you’re not. The ‘be yourself’ cliché is undoubtedly old and overused, but on first dates it can’t be stressed enough. If you’re off-the-wall, bat-shit crazy to begin with, then do your thing without fear; maybe your date likes feeding police horses Caesar salad and mooning tour busses. But if you’re not crazy and you act like you are for one night in order to make an unforgettable impression, it will be what’s expected of you next time.

5- Reek of cologne or perfume

Smell evokes memories and forms associations more powerfully than any other human sense. Don’t lather yourself in your favorite scent on the first date, because you can’t be sure if it will trigger a negative subconscious reaction from your date. Go instead with a recent shower and simple deodorant. The last thing you want flashing through your date’s mind is the image of a troublesome ex or an old teacher who reeked of cologne covering up bad hygiene.

Workout
ON-THE-GO

1. Warm Up “jumping jacks & prone jacks”
Steps (these steps for jumping jacks can be preform for prone jacks, the only difference is to lay on the floor in a plank position)
a) Begin by standing with your feet together and arms at your sides. Keeping your abdominal muscles tight to pull your pelvis forward and take the curve out of your lower back.
b) Bend your knees and jump, moving your feet apart until they are wider than your shoulders. At the same time, raise your arms over your head. You should be on the balls of your feet.
c) Keep your knees bent while you jump again, bringing your feet together and your arms back to your sides. At the end of the movement, your weight should be on your heels.
d) Repeat the exercise and work in set. As you become more and more fit, i would encourage you to perfrom jumping jacks faster and for a certain length of time rather than in sets,

2. Leg Toning “Walking lunges”
Steps
Standing tall with your shoulders back and down and abdominals engaged, place your feet together. Your arms can be flat at your side, holding your hips or behind your head. Breathing normally, step forward with your right foot, bending both knees so that your front knee is aligned over your ankle and the back knee comes close to the floor. Your back heel is lifted off the floor. Before your back knee touches the floor, push up with your back left leg, forcing the weight of your body through your right heel, simultaneously bringing your left foot together with your right foot. Without pausing, alternate legs, lunge forward with your left foot, bending both knees so that your front knee is aligned with your ankle and the back knee comes close to the floor. Your back heel is lifted off the floor. Before your back knee touches the floor, push up with your back right leg, forcing the weight of your body through your left heel, simultaneously bringing your right foot together with your left foot. Continue to perform the steps above, alternating legs for 20 steps and increasing the steps as you get stronger.

3. 1 leg burpees
Single leg burpees, like their twp legged counterparts, are a brutal exercise that really get the heart rate going. In terms of improving vertical jump performance they have 2 main uses. One, using plenty of reps and short rest breaks they are a great conditioning tool and if your bodyfat levels are too high than burpees, as part of a focused training plan and a good diet are great for stripping off the excess weight.
In shorter burtst the burpee is a great explosive strength exercise due to having to overcoming the deep position of the very low squat. The single leg version is particularly challenging and an excellent choice for single leg jumpers.

4. Body twists

5. Plank

6. Stretch

Allison Scagliotti

Our fall cover girl isn’t your average 19-year-old. Refreshingly self-aware with striking looks that could easily link her to Gina Gershon and a penchant for playing ‘the strong, smart chick’, Allison Scagliotti is the girl you want to tune in and watch every week. She’s also got an iPod playlist spanning back to 1930s jazz, gum and hand sanitizer topping her list of must-haves and a Lab-Pitt rescue dog she refers to as ‘the love of her life’. In short, she’s the girl you want to befriend.

Born in Monterey, Calif., Allison moved to Louisiana with her family before the age of five. Planning to end up in New York and pursue musical theatre, it was a chance meeting with an acting coach at age 11 that pushed her toward film and television. After seven years in New Orleans, Allison and her mom picked up and moved to Los Angeles. Three pilots and almost two years later, she landed the role of Mindy on Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh.

Today, Allison plays witty tech-genius Claudia Donovan, a fan favorite on Syfy’s Warehouse 13. Next she’ll be seen in Losers Take All, a film about a punk band’s almost-rise to fame, circa 1986, from the director of Prey for Rock & Roll.

Who would she like to star opposite? Robin Williams, Catherine Keener and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hands down. No hesitation.

Who are her favorite fashion designers? She casually laughs and says, “Ya know, I’m still learning.” This kind of divulgence makes it impossible to not like her.

Allison holds a fondness for Chuck Taylors and wife-beaters but a black Alexander Wang dress she wore down the Comic-Con carpet has since become her favorite. Almost culminating her teenage years, she speaks frankly about her feelings toward smart roles, Joan Jett and the future…
